I've been listening to 40 Below Summer like a dork. I've got no actual studying to be doing, but I could be writing a ~1 page paper. I'm catching up on House instead.

I'm very tempted to order at least one of the Ash Ra Tempel albums...the debut is absolutely phenomenal, I'd love to hear it as remastered by Manuel himself. Not to mention hearing any of the others.
You should hear Love and Desire album by Manuel Gottsching if you haven't already. That's my go-to album for background music while writing research papers.
I haven't yet, but I'll look into it...I love Manuel's playing, whether it be on guitar or keys/electronics/whatever...between Ash Ra Tempel's stuff and Ashra's, I'm all like "I Manuel Göttsching" (in a non-erotic way).
Also: Do you perhaps mean Dream and Desire?
Whoops, yeah, that's it. I always get that wrong somehow.
Ah, alright. Have you heard Klaus Schulze's In Blue? I'm listening to Return of the Tempel right now (someone did me a favor and uploaded the entire thing to youtube in one piece, same thing with the other tracks from discs 1 and 2 at least), more Manuel guitar goodness and Klaus synths.
I like In Blue. It's a lot better than some of his other albums from around that time.
I don't know what the rest of the album's like, but I'm really enjoying this track. I may have to put on Into the Blue next.

I really like mixing drums. Not a fan of recording them. I like the sound of a mic'd Hihatt but always got told it was pointless. I've never used room mic's on drums either. Is it just for a bit of reverb?
In a way, maybe, but the room is really dead so it probably wouldn't add much reverb. Just a fuller sound. And I just miked the hihat with a technique to try to minimize bleed from the snare and crashes. Worked somewhat...kinda. but in the mix the hi-hat will be a bit more present than my other track.

Wow 12 mics? Did you mic up the top and bottom of the snare or something? I was always taught to do that at college and it became a major pain and waste of a channel
We have at least 24 channels of simultaneous input. No big thing. But yeah. You would probably want a bottom mic, though. It usually balances out the sound. I was thinking of doing a mic on the side to make it fuller, but I was lazy. Probably should have added another bass mic.

I like mixing and editing drums so it's not really a problem. It just sucks that I got sloppy and had to punch in at every key change.

I had a rough sketch of the 4/4 part (about 1.5 minutes) and I wrote everything else and recorded it. Setting up the mics and getting levels takes at least 2 hours though. Huzzah 12 mics on a set. But it's going to sound great after I edit out all my f**kups since I was recording at 4 in the morning.
