I think Genesis have made 4 indispensable Prog albums:
Nursery Cryme - Foxtrot - Selling England By the Pound - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway

I think King Crimson have made  4 indispensable Prog albums:
Larks Tongues in Aspic - Starless and Bible Black - Red - The Great Deceiver Live 1973/74

I think  ELP have made 5 indispensable Prog albums:
Emerson, Lake and Palmer -Tarkus - Pictures at an Exhibition - Trilogy - Brain Salad Surgery

Pink Floyd: Meddle, Dark Side, Wish, Animals, Wall. (another 5)

Soft Machine: 2, 3, 6, 7, Bundles

Zappa: Hot Rats, Grand Wazoo, Waka/Jawaka, Over-Nite, One Size, Apostrophe, Roxy, Zappa in NYC, Sleep Dirt...and so on...

Conclusion: there are many of great 70s bands that can match Genesis' "Gold era".

This. Sums it up pretty well.
Not trying to start an argument (yes I am) but PIT album against album.

I mean Fragile was very close if did not lose in a poll I saw against ATOTT!

So what goes up against Trespass? Let's try "Animals"
Nursery Cryme?                                    Let's try "Wish You Were Here"
Foxtrot?                                                   Let's try "Meddle"
Selling England?                                  Let's try "Dark Side of the Moon"
The Lamb?                                            Let's try "The Wall"
Granted you may come up with a single album that may beat one of these, but take your suggested artists and go album to album head to head and see how the votes turn out.
In my view I only see Pink Floyd having a serious shot and YES just falling short. But again, that's MY view and opinion, but I believe I'm correct.

Just the first one. Trespass vs Animals. You bring Three Pigs, I bring a Knife. You bring a Sheep I'll show that sheep Fang son of Great Fang, and I'll make your Dog Stagnant! They'll all be seeing Vision of Angels.

Who knows. Animals might beat Trespass. Let's find out.

That´s really evident, that the name "Genesis" works as a strong magnet to various PA members although the topic itself would be however weird. I´m sorry but this is the exemplar case of this poll, beginning by much suggestive poll question.

At all cost I´ve picked 1st option. Almost all of King Crimson or Yes can top "1st 6 Genesis albums", especially if we count perhaps one of weakest Prog debuts, i.e. From Genesis To Revelation. Thumbs Down

In addition, I like unconditionally only three Genesis albums: Trespass, Nursery Cryme and Selling England (*****). Foxtrot and Broadway seem to be too pretentious for me (***). By the way, isn´t it one of reasons for Gabriel´s departure?Wink

My I suggest you specify the KC albums up against specific Gen albums? You can even call it a KC poll!

ie. what goes against selling England? etc.

I´m sorry but I´m lazy to specify it. Simply: I always prefer (almost) all King Crimson albums over above mentioned Genesis ones, the same case with Yes. Debut and post-Gabriel albums aren´t worth to mention.

Gabriel probably left Genesis because he wanted to change his backup band ...

Of course there are many bands that are at least as good as Genesis. It seems to me that as soon people lost their religion, they started to worship a couple of bands/artists. Stop being slow in evolution. We can overcome that gap.

But Ummagumma only really makes it because of the live component so Yessongs could be added to the Yes sequence.  Then again, no band has produced a trifecta of the quality of Foxtrot, SEBTP and The Lamb.

And I think i detect a bit of a resurgence of favour on this forum, and in the general press, for Emerson Lake and Palmer in recent months.

As others have stated before, Genesis may be considered one of the best prog bands. Not necessarily the best, but I don't know of another band that deserves the title either. Genesis might share the honour with Yes, ELP and some other bands, and once you try to pin down which bands, you're already in trouble.

But, as P.L. Menel, ex - lead singer of IQ once said, when an interviewer asked him if he thought IQ was the best band in the world: it doesn't matter to be the best band, but to be some people's favorite band.

Each diamond only shines for a happy few.

I agree. In this case the list might start with A Saucerful of Secrets or end with Animals if we are talking about six albums.

Definitely not. The live component is excellent, but the studio component makes Ummagumma exceptional.

I would say Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound, a perfect match against Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here.

Genesis were a great band, and certainly quite influential during the decades after (80s, 90s). Maybe the most influential of all classic bands, but not the best band of their time, nor the best band ever .

Yes. Many bands have surpassed their output, and many bands in the future will probably do so.

While Genesis had some good songs, and Collins & Hackett have proven themselves as musicians, their overall approach was much too simplistic, compared to many of their peers (Crimson, ELP, Yes, Gentle Giant, etc...).

I understand that their accessability has made them a favorite for many people here, and I have no problem with that.

Best prog band ever?  Not even in the top 10.
Trust me. I know what I'm doing.

I'll be honest, I've tried to like Genesis and I've given them many chances, but I just can't get into them at all.  I don't know what it is and I can't really explain it, but I just don't like them.  So my answer would be, yes, I think tons of bands have far surpassed Genesis in the prog category, according to me. LOL

That sequence from Trespass to Wind & Wuthering really is rather special, and ATTWT & Duke were also, IMHO, excellent albums.

I love Genesis, and was virtually bought up on them in my formative teenage years, so they will always hold a special place.

So, whilst they are not my favourite band, I don't think that the exceptionally high standard of that run of albums in a row will ever be matched by any other band.

I'd like to be proved wrong, thoughWink

I agree with everything he says here.
