I feel like this has been brought up before and shot down, but the search function sucks.
Shouldn't the pop-up message, which displays when rating an album 5 stars, also show when rating an album one star?

I have a feeling that this used to come up when "0-stars" was still an
actual rating, but I agree that it should be bumped to the 1 option.
To be used sparingly, as should a 5 star. actually, wouldn't it be nice if your account would only let you have a certain ratio of each rating? You'd be given two 5s, three 4s, four 3s, three 2s and two 1s to distribute and when you were all out of those you'd get a refill. Keep things on an even playing field, y'know. I know it's impossible, but it was an interesting thought I just had ![]() |

The concept of using 40% of your available options "sparingly" seems ludicrous. Perhaps in a 10 point system skewing away from the poles would be fine, but I see no reason to prozacify how we feel with such a narrow target.

No. That sounds dreadful. I don't want to have to go to the trash heap every time I review a masterpiece. |

A pop-up message won't stop the * review which in too many cases are given by people who want to promote the albums they like in detriment of other albums.
But as it was said in other threads, maybe it would be a good idea for the * rater to be asked to write a review in which he has to explain why he is rating only one star |

Ratings without reviews are, frankly, almost worthless once a few honest reviews kick in, especially from collaborators. Forcing manipulators to write a review for a one star rating will not prevent them from manipulating- they will either make up a vague review (which will give their manipulation a 10x weighting) or they will be lazy and just post two star ratings. |

Yeah that's what I was remembering it from I think. I think the problem with you suggestion is you can rate a lot of albums 5 stars without being a over-rater. People are just more inclined to review albums they like. I want to review the albums I love; I don't want to waste time reviewing every terrible Spock's Beard album I've heard.

I actually think that message is annoying. Guidelines for reviews should be read and that's it.

Seconded. I think we should get rid of the pop-up for 5 star reviews - let alone add another pop-up for 1 star reviews. |

On a more serious note: the pop up on 5 stars serves a purpose. It's intended to keep people from considering (new) albums master pieces too easily. Not every 'great album' is necessarily a masterpiece. A master piece can only reveal itself by standing the test of time. Maybe you could argue the same for a piece of rubbish, but a one star album is not necessarily a piece of rubbish. It may also be a non-prog album by an artist who has made prog albums before or after the one being rated. One to five stars is not just a numeric rating applied to an album, the individual ratings have their own definitions as well - and that's been the case since the launch of PA.

Maybe in theory, but in practice this year we've seen a lot of 5* thrown in the battle for new releases which probably will be gorgotten in 2-3 years.. |

The last days I often thought about that, that maybe people rate albums 1 or 2 stars only, because they do not like the artist in general.
For example, I was also tempted to rate Bjork's Debut album (I happen to own it) with 1 star, but then I thought, I could not do this. I would have rated it so low only, because I do not like her style in general. And that would probably not be fair towards her. So shouldn't it be prevented somehow? With a rule, let's say: One may only rate an album 1 or 2 stars, if he/she rated another album of the same artist with at least 3 stars. Also to prevent fanboyism: One may only rate an album 5 stars, if he/she rated another album of the same artist with at least 4 stars. (Exception: if the artist has only 1 album, a 5 star rating should be allowed.) I know it is complicated... ![]() |
