A reason why Pink Floyd should win:
3 albums vs 2 in the top 10 and WYWH at n.4 while ITCOCK is at 6. |

yeah but what about their after - 80's stuff ??? KC is the clear winner then. You can't Beat The Power to Believe , In the ConstruKction of Light of Thrak ( The Division Bell, TFC, MLOR, are enjoyable but a league below, imho) |

You mean The Division Bell with that masterpiece entitled "High Hopes"?

It's not only High Hopes. "What Do You Want from Me" starts amazing, "Marooned" is an instrumental landmark, "Wearing the inside out" is super catchy, "Keep Talking" features great samples, and overall is a very enjoyable record. You don't credit The Division Bell album for being innovative/prog, but only for being good for what it is. A fine, well crafted rock record (imo) However, when it comes to compare experimentation and pushing the boundaries of the prog genre ; KC ( 80's- 90's-00's) can beat the semi-retired (Water-less) 80's - 90's PF any time/day/hour of the week. |

Well, here we are, the 'best' prog band ever? I'm not so sure of that but with this pairing I pick King Crimson. In real terms I go with Yes as the best prog band ever. King Crimson is not as much a band as it is a Robert Fripp collection of various musicians with varying styles. As a band Yes has written far more complex material collectively. Example, Close to the Edge, And You and I, and Awaken just to name but three. The structure and composition of these three songs alone ecplipse anything King Crimson did for the possible exception of 'In the Court of the Crimson King'. Genesis would have to be my number two band behind Yes. However, that being said I do like much of what King Crimson did and I even prefer them to Genesis in the here and now. Preferences are subjective however. I don't think any prog act has or will beat the compostion of the album 'Close to the Edge'. Pink Floyd is not really a true prog band in my eyes but they are the most popular band to come out of England, right up there with Led Zeppelin. Popularity is not a true measure of talent and it can even be said that popularity is inversly proportional to talent in many cases.

Its not because it's more complex that it is better. Songwritting ability is way more rare than musical talent. |

I can't vote against KC. With the number of times they altered their sound, and their ability to churn out great music with an always changing lineup, they are truly progressive by spirit.

Very tough call, even for a Floyd fanatic such as myself. Ultimately, what it came down to for me was the band with the most amount of material I simply could not live without.
For KC its three - the Wetton era records. For Floyd it's 6 - Atom Heart Mother through to Animals, inclusive (yes, even including Obscured By Clouds). So I pick Floyd. Edited by Eapo_q42 - November 22 2010 at 23:47 |
