At last, here we are at the final match of Battle of the Prog Bands. The two contenders are Pink Floyd and King Crimson. Vote for your favorite, and the band with the most votes will be the winner of Battle of the Prog Bands. Please do not vote unless you have listened to at least one album by both bands (which hopefully everyone here has done.)
Here is the tournament thus far:
The final results will be posted on November 24.
Pink Floyd is the band that got me into Prog and music in general, but I have to give my vote to King Crimson. If they win this tournament, I (almost) couldn't be more happy.

It's amazing that none of the Symphony Prog bands have made it to the finals!
My vote goes to the band that made my all time favorite album.

Again, my vote rests in the court of the Crimson King. I love you, Pink Floyd, but in my opinion, King Crimson could be the greatest progressive band ever to exist.

Wow, so this is it? We've reached the end. This all started, what, around a year ago? Sad to see so many great contenders fall off the road so early on, but happy to see the likes Crimson make it to the restaurant at the end of the universe.

Oh to decide... Pink Floyd who brought progressive rock music to the mainstream (not an easy task) without too much compromise to mainstream requirements. (The odd single or two...) Or the band that generated so much musical inspiration other bands without really being a household name (ala Beatles, Floyd.)
Do Pink Floyd count as space rock, symphonic rock, (operatic rock...?)
Weren't KC a symphonic rock band at some obscure stage in their career?

This is a complete absurd to me. King Crimson is one of the most overrated progressive bands and should never be among the 2 best bands of progressive rock, in my opinion. This place is reserved for Yes and Genesis !
All in all, I go for Pink Floyd here...

So what's with the color scheme here? It is either Pink or Crimson, both variants of red. It would be interesting to see if this would have turned out differently if Yes won, or if the two symphonic giants were not pitted against one another when they were. Alas, water under the bridge. Neither of these bands are truly in the running for the top spot for me (Yes, Tull, Vangelis would be up there, but that's me). As to my favorite of these two champions, that is hard to say, but I can say that I consider one of them to be the very image of progressiveness (although both are quite innovative). So I must choose the true king over a fella named Floyd.

So, it's obvious, Pink Floyd even when they are not going to win.

Pink Floyd for me, there are much more albums from them I like completley, and much less songs I don't really like from them. However, even if it is very contradictory, I would be rather disapointed with the forum if King Crimson lost this poll... still, I expected this match to be closer.

It depends upon what day it is. I like them both a great deal. Which one I play depends upon my mood at the time. Call me an oddball, but I just don't view music as a competition. (At least, not since I was about 14.)
There are artists I like, and artists I don't like -- when I like two, I don't think along the lines of "which one do I like more?" -- at least, not consciously. I just buy CDs from them both.
Plus, Crimson have had so many diverse incarnations that they don't even have one "sound" to think of. (I might say something similar of Floyd -- I find the early, really freaky "acid" stuff to be unlistenable, but love Meddle to Animals. (The Wall just depresses me -- I find it really drags.)
Can't vote without a "both" option -- I prefer both of these fine bands to hundreds of other artists.

We're now speaking of the top. I want to say that Pink Floyd have contributed to prog's popularity more than everybody else. This is why I vote for them. I mean popularity not only in the "commercial" sense. Bands like Mosly Autumn, RPWL, more or less all the Heavy Prog bands since Porcupine Tree have a debt with Pink Floyd. The nfluence of KC in the prog world, probably because Fripp is too genious to be imited, is limited to the excursions of KC members into other bands: Lake with ELP, Bruford with Yes (and Your Is No Disgrace is more a KC song IMO), Mel Collins with everybody else and Fripp with almost nobody.
So two very different bands. Prog world needs them both and more.
BUT FOR ME PINK FLOYD IS THE TOP.

Personally, when I listen to albums like A Saucerful of Secrets, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother and Meddle I can't see how you can call them anything but. Even the "commercial" albums still have undeniable progressive tendencies. |
I can't speak for Walter, but I have mentioned in earlier threads my thoughts on this. It really is a truly subjective response on my part--I just somehow have never thought of Pink Floyd as a Prog band. That isn't a criticism of the group; it's a statement of how I perceive and think about the music I hear. I was genuinely surprised a few years ago when I started picking up magazines (such as a Mojo special) that put Floyd on the cover as the best Prog band of all time.
Please don't get me wrong, this has nothing to do with like or dislike for me. I've been a longtime fan of Pink Floyd and think they are a simply stunning rock band, one of the best of all time. It's just that somehow my head does not place them in the Prog category.
I think it was Logan who made a great response in the earlier thread that the problem may be a distinction between Prog and progressive (however we want to make such distinctions). I do think Pink Floyd has illustrated a progressive career, especially over the stretch of albums you mention, but they have never struck me as a Prog band. But why that is, I still haven't been able to articulate fully. As I say, it's a rather subjective thing for me.
Having said all that, I think Floyd's progressive period runs from Pipers to Meddle. The albums that come after are absolutely iconic in the rock canon, but I'm not sure I quite see the Prog or progressive element there. I chose King Crimson because I think they have displayed a much more adventurous spirit throughout their career as a whole. I can think of few bands who have reinvented themselves again and again so constantly and with such astonishing results.

KC but not because they are the 'progressive one' but because Red is my all time favourite music album. It really comes down to Red versus DSOTM, both incredible bands at the end of the day, so hard to choose.

So is this battle of who is more prog than the Other ? or is it battle of who's music you like to listen to the most ?
On the first question i couldn't give a flying Pig on the second which it should be about , Floyd just made better albums Tours and Films .
so FLOYD it is

Well, for what it's worth, this question has come up again and again throughout the tournament. It's not an unreasonable question to ask. I think if the poll has always asked us, who is your favourite progressive band, or who do you think is the best progressive band, then judging the group by whatever your own criteria for progressiveness isn't in the least bit irrelevant.
But if we just want to go with who we like to listen to better, then it's still Crimson for me.

Not sure how progression is measured but PF went from creating a psychedelic classic (regarded as a pop album for some obscure reason... Piper only has 1 chorus on it... that is some sort of progression...) to staging opera (Ca Ira - I know it's just Rog (sic) but he counts) and presenting and inspiring theatre, doing films and soundtracks and concerts.
KC annexed symphonic prog, told everyone what to do, how to do it then climbed their own mountain.
In a very rough analogy KC are the superdeveloped engine (unseen by many but stunning those who know) while PF are the super developed fuselage and chassis (the blues. classical engine is a quality engine shared by many) who impress virtually all who touch, all who see, all a band could ever be...
Or another analogy. KC are the laboratory while PF are the ...zoo...???
Both changed throughout. PF from album to album, KC from sections of albums to sections albums... a bit like Rush in that respect.
Frankly you can't go to far wrong with either contender.

Poll Question: Which band do you prefer?
Has nothing to do with which is "more prog".

I'm afraid this is quite an anticlimactic final (for me, anyway)...
I believe if Genesis or Yes were paired up with KC or PF in the final, THAT would've been a bit more interesting...
I really don't know who to vote for...I enjoy both, but I'll vote PF to make it more entertaining

That would make a fun post poll poll... if you see what I mean. When KC have won this one, make the next one... ooh, say in a day or two when everyone's forgotten this result and we can enjoy / argue bitterly about it all again. A kind of post poll remaster / reissue thing.

Ideally, that still ought NOT to be relevant. I would not call Genesis more progressive than Magma but I do like their music more, and I mean their prog rock albums.
