I think if the poll has always asked us, who is your favourite progressive band, or who do you think is the best progressive band, then judging the group by whatever your own criteria for progressiveness isn't in the least bit irrelevant.

Ideally, that still ought NOT to be relevant. I would not call Genesis more progressive than Magma but I do like their music more, and I mean their prog rock albums.

That would make a fun post poll poll... if you see what I mean. When KC have won this one, make the next one... ooh, say in a day or two when everyone's forgotten this result and we can enjoy Tongue/ argue bitterly AngryOuchabout it all again. A kind of post poll remaster / reissue thing. Cool

Poll Question: Which band do you prefer?

Has nothing to do with which is "more prog".

Not sure how progression is measured but PF went from creating a psychedelic classic (regarded as a pop album for some obscure reason... Piper only has 1 chorus on it... that is some sort of progression...) to staging opera (Ca Ira - I know it's just Rog (sic) but he counts) and presenting and inspiring theatre, doing films and soundtracks and concerts.

KC annexed symphonic prog, told everyone what to do, how to do it then climbed their own mountain.

In a very rough analogy KC are the superdeveloped engine (unseen by many but stunning those who know) while PF are the super developed fuselage and chassis (the blues. classical engine is a quality engine shared by many) who impress virtually all who touch, all who see, all a band could ever be...

Or another analogy. KC are the laboratory while PF are the ...zoo...??? Wink

Both changed throughout. PF from album to album, KC from sections of albums to sections albums... a bit like Rush in that respect.

Frankly you can't go to far wrong with either contender.

Well, for what it's worth, this question has come up again and again throughout the tournament.  It's not an unreasonable question to ask.  I think if the poll has always asked us, who is your favourite progressive band, or who do you think is the best progressive band, then judging the group by whatever your own criteria for progressiveness isn't in the least bit irrelevant.

But if we just want to go with who we like to listen to better, then it's still Crimson for me.

KC but not because they are the 'progressive one' but because Red is my all time favourite music album. Smile It really comes down to Red versus DSOTM, both incredible bands at the end of the day, so hard to choose.

Pink Floyd is like a pasta bolognese, plain but delicious, while King Crimson is more like a shish kebab it is filled with loads of different vegetables, meat and spices and taste allot of different things, very exiting

What is a pasta bolognaise? Apparently it is plain but delicious, like fresh baked bread.

Interestingly, I believe these are the two most influential bands for Steven Wilson (as stated in some random internet interview).

My pick is certainly King Crimson, probably my all-around favorite progressive band.... I'm a Pink Floyd fan, but I don't love them.

I don't understand how cutting a word can transform it into two different words.
If Pink Floyd are not "prog", are they "ressive" ?

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution

The progressive one.

Exactly.
Sorry if you've already explained this in a previous thread, but can you tell me why Pink Floyd isn't progressive?  Personally, when I listen to albums like A Saucerful of Secrets, Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother and Meddle I can't see how you can call them anything but.  Even the "commercial" albums still have undeniable progressive tendencies.

I can't speak for Walter, but I have mentioned in earlier threads my thoughts on this.  It really is a truly subjective response on my part--I just somehow have never thought of Pink Floyd as a Prog band.  That isn't a criticism of the group; it's a statement of how I perceive and think about the music I hear.   I was genuinely surprised a few years ago when I started picking up magazines (such as a Mojo special) that put Floyd on the cover as the best Prog band of all time.

Please don't get me wrong, this has nothing to do with like or dislike for me.  I've been a longtime fan of Pink Floyd and think they are a simply stunning rock band, one of the best of all time.  It's just that somehow my head does not place them in the Prog category.

I think it was Logan who made a great response in the earlier thread that the problem may be a distinction between Prog and progressive (however we want to make such distinctions).  I do think Pink Floyd has illustrated a progressive career, especially over the stretch of albums you mention, but they have never struck me as a Prog band.  But why that is, I still haven't been able to articulate fully.  As I say, it's a rather subjective thing for me.

Having said all that, I think Floyd's progressive period runs from Pipers to Meddle.  The albums that come after are absolutely iconic in the rock canon, but I'm not sure I quite see the Prog or progressive element there.  I chose King Crimson because I think they have displayed a much more adventurous spirit throughout their career as a whole.  I can think of few bands who have reinvented themselves again and again so constantly and with such astonishing results.
