OK I did get Apostrophe and I liked it but One Size Fits All is definitive prog and I loved that. Roxy and Elsewhere is difficult to get but I am hunting down Were only in it for the money and Freak Out. Great albums I believe.

i think Make A Jazz Noise Here and Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life should be your next purchases if youre enjoying the 72-76 era (OSFA, ('), R&E, ZNY, TGW, Waka-Jawaka, etc...)
Lather should also be purchased, all those 70s albums kinda lead up to Lather (which i think was originally supposed to be released in 77?) and is the exclamation point of his 72-76 era |

I'd go with Joe's Garage. You get humor,a storyline and serious guitar work. Watermelon in easter hay is likely one of his best solo guitar pieces.

While that a great one, I don't know if its the best place for a newbie to start. If they can handle the bawdy humour aspect, then it is definitely essential. |

I like the option "the one that has all the jazzy bits", but I have to go with "the other live album", which for me would be The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life.
I'd have to guess you haven't heard that one yet. Edited by Slartibartfast - October 18 2010 at 19:48 |

Hot Rats isn't the jazzy one dude. I have to go for Apostrophe. It's the first one I heard and it's brilliant. I also love Over Nite Sensation, Hot Rats, Grand Wazoo and Sheik Yerbouti. I hate Uncle Meat and don't have much time for Burnt Weeny Sandwich. One Size Fits All has Po'Jama People, which is a tie for my favourite Zappa song (along with Uncle Remus), but the rest of the album isn't nearly as good. |

Agreed - Lather is a one size fits all compendium of Zappa's early to mid 70s phase, nearly all killer and precious little filler. The chopped up sections that came out as In NY, Studio Tan, Orchestral Favourites and Sleep Dirt are all well and good, but it all makes a lot more sense as Zappa originally intended for it to be released.
