If only for the badass keytar. On an unrelated note, I think it's pretty cool to see a 4 year old thread that hasn't been locked with a bunch of members who haven't been active since I've been here.

Wow, that's got to be the worst Keytar I've ever seen, I had the Yamaha KX-5 and even that at least had three octaves.

definitely Kevin. Jordan has no song writing skills, terrible tone and w**ks like hell. With Kevin they were technical but still had good song writing skills, now they're just showing off with fast licks.

Kevin Moore was my reason to like DT for the first place... just listen to 6'00 lyrics and music... Moore was really a mastermind, while Rudess tries to fill all his lack of composition using rare technology, like that annoying iphone tune generator... so unnecesary piece of crap... who would have a Korg Oasys and might be using an iphone to generate noices...??? that's really silly... so Moore for a thousand miles...!!!

No Contest....KEVIN MOORE!
Look at the songs he wrote...amazing! Plus, his sounds were less "spacey", more lush and classic.
I remember having a discussion with the DT manager at the time. He told me he was in his office, and Kevin walked in. The manager said he knew right away just by looking at him that Kevin was going to tell him he quit the band! What a shame.

Kevin Moore has helped create some of the best Dream Theater songs ever, however Jordan Rudess is just so talented that I had to vote for him

I'll try to define the eras of Dream Theater, according to their Keyboard player: Kevin Moore = Gloomy, Balanced (Listen To Awake) Derek Sherinian = Nasty, Rocker (Listen To Falling Into Infinity) Jordan Rudess = Orchestral, Virtuosity (Listen To Octavarium) After all, my vote goes to Kevin Moore, because since he left, a strange kind of ¿finesse? is missing.

My vote was for Jordan Rudess.
I love the emotionally-driven motifs employed by Kevin (especially in "Space-Dye Vest"), but having had the amazing opportunity to see Dream Theater live, Jordan Rudess plays a mean keytar solo.

I voted for Moore. Listen to his songwriting skills (Space Dye Vest, Wait for Sleep, 6:00). He wasn't as technical as Rudess, but he added more atmosphere to the compositions. He kind of anchored the band, in a way. There's a lot less instrumental showing-off on the band's first three records.
Sherinian is underrated. His was more of a jazzy, funky sort of style. Although he was only with the band for three releases (Change of Seasons, Falling Into Infinity, and Once in a Livetime), I didn't mind his contributions. Trial of Tears and Lines in the Sand are good performances by him.
Rudess is a good arranger (his orchestral arrangements in the song Octavarium and the Six Degrees suite are excellent), and a phenomenal player. He sometimes doesn't know quite when to stop showing off, however. But I have to admit, he is very entertaining to watch when doing his keytar thingy solos on DT live DVDs. He is more exciting a presence onstage than Moore, come to think of it. I think Octavarium (the song) remains his best ever performance.
So, the three all possess different styles. Moore wins, because of his great songwriting contributions (he did a lot towards making I & W and Awake special albums).

Also, I like Rudess' sense of humour that he infuses the songs with. Some hate it, but I love his little ragtime piano solo in The Dance of Eternity, for example.

Kevin Moore is a musician. Jordan Rudess is a pair of hands.

Kevin Moore; the Moore era is my favourite.
Rudess is a skilled keyboardist, but sometimes he is a show off, like someone already said. And that's just not good. It can ruin a song atmosphere.

Moore was a powerful creative influence for the band, and his presence brought a tremendous sense of balance to DT's work. Rudess has a tendency to disrupt said balance, so Moore is clearly the better keyboardist FOR DREAM THEATER. But Rudess has done some really amazing work outside of DT that impressed me far more than anything Moore ever did... I gotta give my vote to the one I truly prefer.
Moore is incredible... but Rudess is Magnificent.
