Finally checked out The Modern Lovers after having them recommended for ages and.... blurgh. Not liking them at all. That's just a first impression though, may change later if it grows on me.

Friend of mine was getting annoyed at the sleeve notes to my Squeeze compilation, which say things like the guitar solo on Another Nail In My Heart is "the ultimate test of a player's mastery of the instrument and probably the greatest of all time" and that Tender "consistently tops international Best Song Ever polls" and so on. He was ranting about how they're alright but how dare they right such excessive self-praising rubbish etc, unaware that the whole thing was a joke. Squeeze's first hits compilation was called "Squeeze Classics Vol. 25" so they do things like that.

Possibly their worst in my opinion.

It occurs to me relistening to RATM's back catalogue that the band may have been successful despite Zach, not because of him.

^ Speaking about Polish prog, I never really liked Second Life Syndrome all that much... I think I gave it a 2 star in my review.

I haven't tried Riverside, I was thinking about getting Anno Domini High Definition but I never really got to it.

That album is actually quite good... pretty eclectic, definitely surprised me.

^Anno Domini... sounds more Prog Metal-ish, but I prefer the more atmospheric Second Life Syndrome, though I don't think it's as great as some say it is.

I found Riverside quite disappointing. Musically they're a bit dull and the lyrics/vocals can be a little cringey at times.

I'd definitely recommended Riverside's ADHD, there's alot of good music crammed into each song, and as the name suggest it never stays in one place or on a particular theme. However, my favorite is Outside Myself, "Loose Heart" is one of my favorite songs. Second Life Syndrome is very good as well, haven't really gotten a feel for Rapid Eye Movement yet, so I'll put off judgment for now.

Thought of an artist who would never be here (and shouldn't be either) but did have a big influence on the darker, harsher breed of recent prog acts- Big Black.
