Alien was unique, and was the best horror film with the best cast.

Aliens was the best action film.

Alien 3 had the most beautiful alien (the dog buster is a magnificent beast) but the script was a bit of a mess and the cast and director seem to be going through the motions without that much conviction. The death of Newt and Hicks at the beginning was a mistake in my opinion, (I'm sure they could have concocted a reasonable explanation as to why Newt had aged 6 years while in stasis, or found another actress to play the role).

Alien Resurrection had the best character actor cast (Weaver, Ryder, Pearlman, Wincott) but sadly underutilised a fine director, a poor script and the human/alien hybrid was just horrible. But I love it never-the-less and it gets my vote.

AVP - was okay - but a missed opportunity I think.

AVP Requiem - got it, haven't watched it yet.
What?

Alien is a classic gothic horror set in space.
Aliens is a war film set in space.
Alien 3 onwards are all pretty worthless.
For my money Alien is the best film.

Aliens is a great action movie, definitely my favourite action movie off all time, but it's just that, an action movie. Alien is a stunning masterpiece of cinema, and it stands well between my artsy favourites like Tarkovsky, Bergman or Fellini. Alien3 is a great piece of gothic thriller/horror, it scared me the most. A great underrated film. Overall I think these three complement each other very well into the best film trilogy ever.

Jean Pierre Jeunet could have done a great job with Resurrection, he's a great director, but the script was very poor even though the ideas they build upon were very promising. Also he was at his first Hollywood job so he didn't have any control. His frustration with this situation was expressed through some anti-franchise comedy moments in the film which ruin it for me even more.

AVP was worse but I have come to appreciate it since I saw Requiem LOL

Looking forward to the prequels, even if Ridley is now a completely different director to the one from the 70s...

Ha, after eighteen years I think I know how I feel about the film. Saw it on opening day, and I own all the films in all the formats. Seen it many a times.

just wait a few years and try it again, it's a stunner (and the director's version is almost a different movie, also great)

few movies beat that first Alien, I remember seeing it when it came out;  I was about 13 and they were being strict about admitting underage kids so I had to ask a passing adult to pretend I was with them (seriously)..

that said, I absolutely love 3 and think it is probably the finest of the four Alien films proper, just a gorgeous and darkly brilliant sci-fi movie

Aliens followed by Alien. Alien 3 was a huge disappointment, and the rest were complete disasters.

Still I have much hope for the Ridley Scott prequels.

I'm going for the original for the Sigouney in her underwear scene. Tongue
