Sorry I am a newbie to Zappa
 
I thought Id make a weird poll to match his weird sense of humour
 
i own 'Hot Rats' and love it
 
i have bits n pieces and a DVD called Zappa plays Zappa
 
I have a live one called 'Yellow Shark' and a weird live one from Mothers whose name escapes me.
 
But what should I purchase as a newbie to Zappa.?
 
i am serious here - which album should I get????

Well Scott, I'm starting at the beginning and going chronological.  It would seem that with an important artist like this, best to go in order to enjoy the progression as it happened.

If you liked Hot Rats, the next logical step would be to go get Waka / Jawaka and The Grand Wazoo.

Don't blow your cash on Studio Tan, Orchestral Favorites or Sleep Dirt: get the Lather triple album instead.

Zappa in New York is for the most part found on the Lather set, but the consistency of that live set makes it worth owning on its own.

If you want one that has a good overview of this material and funny cover song, I always recommend The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life.Big smile  Covers include Stairway To Heaven and Purple Haze, Gabby Hays, Willy Mays....Tongue

If you want to go DVD, it's gotta be Baby Snakes.

I've been getting into Zappa lately myself, and my 3 favorites are Absolutely Free, We're Only In It For The Money, and Over-Nite Sensation. One Size Fits All is probably his "proggiest", but it's not one of my favorites.
