It was a hard choice, but I voted Fripp in the end.

It was a close tie for me between Howe and Fripp -- two very different guitarists with very different styles -- but I gotta go with Howe. His work with Yes is what really got me into prog in the first place!

1. Fripp 1 1/2. Howe 2. Hackett
Robert Fripp is so ridiculous.
If you don't quite understand why... Check out Lark's Tongues in Aspic parts 1, 3, and 4... and then listen to Fracture from the USA Live album.

1. Barre 2. Zappa 3. Fripp 4. Latimer
I can't possibly base my ranking on ability, since all 4 are excellent musicians, but rather by which style I prefer. Barre is possibly the most versatile of the list, Zappa was the best at improv Fripp is the most original, and Latimer is a great blues-styled player.

Rothers for me, because he doesn't seem to get to many votes... But Hackett is a close second...

While all the above are definately superb guitarists, I feel that the poll is somewhat biased away from metal prog.
My vote would have gone to Petrucci for his musicianship, diversity, complete mastery over the instrument, staying inspired for over 2 decades, etc...
But with Gilmour out of the way, I'll support Gilmour then. :)

Robert Fripp and Steve Howe are INSANLY close, but I would have to go with Steve because he is just alot fast and has much better flow than Robert.

I refuse to vote.
Trying to decide between Howe, Fripp and Gilmour is literally an impossible choice for me.

3. John McLaughlin
But I personally prefer Gilmour to McLaughlin

I'm not a guitarist, so I really can't judge. But I would have to say that due to my biases, Steve Hackett is my pick. His guitar solos are amazing, although I don't know if they are as technical as some other guitarists here. Still, he was very unique for his time, I do know that much.

I have to go with gilmour. he is in opinion the best guitarist ever. Not necesarily skillwise but in creation and writing and the emotion he fills every note with. The best guitarist in prog, taking into account the chops more would have to be John Petrucci I would have to say. His skill as well as his writing are incredible. Just quite enough emotion to rival Gilmour but close.

Twice in this page of this thread were Gilmour and Petrucci mentioned together, while they are in fact oposit in every respect.

Steve Hillage - best complete package
All the others have niches at which they are the best.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

You've become a big fan of Hillage, haven't you?
I would say Zappa, though I'm not a guitarist and can't say if he's really that technical proficient.

Shawn Lane is the best guitarist who ever lived IMO. He also is a killer keyboard player, at least as fast as Jordan Rudess and much faster than Petrucci. His note choice is amazing he played classic rock up to Indo-fusion.
But for all the things we like about prog, at least currently Hillage is my man.

I voted Howe but it's a dead heat between him and Jan Akkerman for me, both had their own unique approach. I don't think any rock guitarist got the instrument to sound as good as Akkerman (listen to Moving Waves for evidence). Despite it's bad sound quality Howe gives a display of sustained brilliance on the triple live album Yessongs.

How is Gilmour crushing Zappa? Thats not right, theres preferences and then theres best. Zappa has way more actual ability than David does.
