Holdsworth is the best, Clap so I'm not voting.  After that, I would say Hackett, then Fripp, then Howe.   All these guys are damn good and much better than I will ever be.   Besides, who says only one has to be the best?  There's some widely divergent styles among these players, and all have their strengths and weaknesses.

Gotta go with Gilmour.
His solos, especially on his latest solo album, are amazing.

And, he plays a mean slide guitar.

Rothery would be 4th for me.

Mind you, Mike Nicholls and Bryan Josh run any of them close, especially if you have heard Frequency and Glass Shadows.

The guitar work has never really stood out for me when I have listened to King Crimson.  I enjoy them more for their drums and percussion, the mellotron, the use of the violins and viola and the sax.  I know that Fripp also played the mellotron and he is known for his Frippertronics.  I don't really know what the Frippertronics are though so I am not sure what he is or is not doing musically on the album.  I really need to see a live KC video to check him out.

No Gary Greene?

John McLaughlin would probably class as my favourite 'prog' guitarist, if I had to pick one, but I'm not really a guitar person, and I think that originality/eclecticism is maybe a bit more important than solo-berkery (Peter Hammill would thus qualify as one of my 'favourite' guitarists, though certainly not the 'best'). Oh, and Mike Oldfield, I really like his guitar-work. Oh, and 10cc are collectively great. And John(?) Cann of Atomic Rooster, while a lousy singer, is pretty good... Gary Moore (who played with Colosseum II, among others) is a favourite, as well... and so on and so forth.

yeah, I don't really fuss about guitarists, Knopfler and Hendrix would be my two favourites, and after that it's a jumble.

A very little known player who sadly belongs among the deceased already is Christian Boulé. He used to play with Clearlight and made two solo albums, "Photo Musik" and "Non-Fiction", which are both worth listening to, especially "Photo Musik". He sounds a bit like Steve Hillage, and for people who don't know Clearlight's "Symphony" album it is a good guessing game which of the two tracks he plays on (on the other Hillage plays the guitar). It is not surprising that Hillage used him as rhythm guitarist in his band for some time, although he admitted in an interview that Christian was an excellent soloist too.

I voted for Andrew Latimer - a much underrated guitarist with distinctive style and a lot of 'feel' for his instrument. I've seen him play live and he really does put across a lot of emotion and soul in his playing

Zappa is amazing in a totally different way.

Uhm! I'd voted for Jan Akkerman from Focus... but out of that list, I stay with Bobby: the most balanced IMO. I've always found Zappa a bit overrated as a guitar player.

Holdsworth? Another safe choice. But puttin him among the guitarist listed would be like cheating: he's an accomplished jazz fusion guitar player. I think he has a huge advantage for that fact.

Really surprising because there are tracks that are simply unbelievable , his acoustic work on early KC albums is tremendous but electric stuff on Sailor's Tale, 21st Century, all of Larks Tongues, Starless and Red are all mind-blowing. His solo on Eno's Baby's on Fire and Bowie's Heroes are original and searing. Forget the Frippertronics, just his various tones ,passionate intricacy and modesty is above and beyond anything by anyone. He is no flashy player but when you hear him live , you will understand his immense contributions to modern guitar playing. Cool

Would have liked to see Roine Stolt and Guthrie Govan on the list (check out his solo album) but from this list, I had to go with Gilmour first and Steve Howe second then Fripp third.  Zappa's playing never really evoked much emotion in me, I know I might get hate for that, but eh, oh well!

Voted for Fripp from this list since I was asked about "best" (would have gone with Hackett if asked about favourite) but my pick would be Mc Laughlin though like somebody else pointed out w.r.t Holdsworth, he's a fusion jazz guitarist.  I got Remember Shakti's Saturday Night in Bombay album a week back and am comprehensively blown away.  Many people here may not be familiar with the names of the Indian musicians who performed in that recital but they are really weighty names for me and that McLaughlin was so completely at home in their midst is stunning.  I have since been telling anybody who did or didn't care to hear LOL that said performance was ten miles or so from my place and I missed it then because I wasn't at all into serious music of any kind.  Cry

Funnily enough, as I was walking to the train station this morning on the way to work, I started thinking abouT this as I was listening to the long guitar solo in Dogs from the Animals album, and I just thought it had to be Dave Gilmour. He may not be the fastest, most technical or experimental, but I just love his style and the emotion he can wring out of that instrument.

Another personal favourite is Andy Latimer. I also loved Rothery's style on the first few Marillion albums.

My vote is for Petrucci.  Howe and Fripp are great, and Zappa (on top of being a genius at songwriting and arranging) could tear it up.  But if we're just talking about guitar skills, Petrucci has them beat in my opinion.

Tie between Zappa and Gilmour, but I voted for Zappa since he had ONLY 14 votes Smile

I love all of them, but I am starting to see just how awesome Zappa is.

I voted for Robert Fripp because he almost single handedly invented a style, approach and sound to guitar playing that even when imitated by his many followers, can only be described as Frippian or Fripp like etc. He is also one of the few guitarists out there who never seems to have resorted to any time-worn guitaristic clichés in his output. (even on blues changes or bog standard riffing, what he layers over the top sounds like Martian scales or modes from Venus)

Why is Alex Lifeson not in the list? To me it's:

1. David Gilmour
2. Alex Lifeson
3. Steve Hackett

I think Fripp is probably more technically skilled than Zappa when it comes to playing guitar, but, there's something about Zappa's solos that is just magical.

Gilmour's always been my favourite, so many amazing solos full of so much feeling. 'Comfortably Numb' is the obvious one with 'On the Turning Away' being another epic. I saw Steve Hackett live in Falmouth, UK recently and what an amazing tone he has. Latimer's solo on 'Ice' is breathtaking and I think underrated. Not that I dislike shred guitar in any way but these guys show them that it's all about the tone and the feeling, speed comes second.
