You mean you "tolerate" them ? How one can like growls ? I listen to a lot of death metal bands but I would never say I like the growls...

Dear god, the narrow mindedness and absolute ignorance of some people is astounding.
Anyways, Arkfeldt here, Oldfield is typical overrated classic prog.

I read the above replies, and decide to apologize. My original post was horribly biased towards Mikael. Actually it was part of my strategy: I intentionally called Oldfield "new age", and said he would lose by 500 votes. That's mean. I did so because I wanna enrage the Oldfield fans and make them vote for Oldfield. That's my endgame. But it wasn't the right thing to do. Sorry. |

Why do they have to do exactly what Oldfield has done in order to match or even surpass him musically? I think people such as Mikael Akerfeldt, Steven Wilson, Jeff Martin, Adam Jones, The fellas in Indukti, Meshuggah, Cynic, etc. are all better songwriters than Oldfield. They may not use the exact same methods or instruments as he does, but that doesn't mean they can't be as good or better. You can of course argue this, but my main point here is that this is all opinion, and nothing more. I just proved that point not once, but now twice. Any rebuttal you give will just be a different opinion than mine, and therefore cannot contradict it. Is that really so hard for folks to understand?

I'm not ask that every modern musician have to do what Oldfield done, but i recognize that Oldfield gain his well deserved place in rock's history.

This is own everyone's taste, i like very much Steve Wilson, but in tastes breaks genres.

No, but with you statement it seems like a little (just very little) upset. |

I have a feeling the Oldfield fans would have voted for Oldfield anyway.

Wow... hard question................
Opeth is my second favorite band, but Oldfield is amazing. Ommadawn is one of my favorite albums.
I'll vote for both :)

Oldfield is good at what he does; but what he does is stock material. Perhaps not where rock was concerned, though. Surely, Tubular Bells was quite popular at the time due to The Exorcist film featuring it, but had it not been for that, would that song have launched Oldfield into real stardum? Honestly, I can't think of one Oldfield tune that stands out as truly brilliant, where as plenty of Opeth songs get that score from me.
Of course, this is all about taste, but I like Akerfeldt is a better songwriter, anyway. That's what matters most to me.

I agree with you 1000% I had known Mike music for years but nothing had caught my attention like Opeth's music and I am not a Death Metal fan. However, Mikael is a revolutionary and a genius. Progressive Metal Celebration. Opeth had been a great influence to create this collage.

Oldfield is legendary and a pioneer in so many ways. Opeth is fabulous but not yet a legend and certainly no pioneer .

At first I didn't think it fair to vote in this pole, because I only listened to Tubular bells by Mike Oldfield, whilst I've listened To ALL of Opeth's works, but, What the hell...the two of them are awesome musicians.
Ps. Voted for Akerfeldt (as expected )
posthumous mention for MJ.

Akerfeldt should walk away with this one. But there does seem to be a lot of Oldfield fans out there voting on this poll.
Comparing their musicianship, both are great players and songwriters. Mikael has one of the best clean singing voices in rock.
Growls? Akerfeldt growls much better (but Oldfield's growls on Tubular Bells, part 2 are very entertaining to listen to as well! )
I'l go for Mikael. But I like Oldfield as well.
MJ never did anything for me.
