Emerson, Lake and Palmer..........NO!!  A couple of tracks here and there, maybe, at a stretch. Trillogy gets a partial spin ("From the Beginning") every year or five, but I gave up trying to really like 'em in 1980. God knows I'd tried, when I was 12 and discovering the delights of Nursery Crhyme, Fragile, Going for the One, DSotM, Six Wives etc, and everything I read on prog seemed to suggest I should be listening to prog's first super group. Well I did, and it left me totally unmoved.

I gave them a good crack of the whip; borrowed all the albums, two by two, from the local library; taped a friend's Tarcus; learned how to draw the logo on my school book covers, the lot!

In the end I just gave up, and nothing I've heard since has ever changed my mind.

Does that make me a bad person?

Same here even though I've seen them six times. Every time seemed no different. And that Abnoxious Neil Peart drum solo that hasn' changed much since the 70s. I actually adread Neil Peart drum solos.

Basically just about anything past the seventies I can't get into.

If only that Geddy guy would learn to write a bassline that consisted of only the root and fifth. What else do you need?! LOL

On this forum there are pretty much pop stars. For good reason though.

I notice you added this as an edit. Not only is it churlish.....after all, did I or anyone criticize Magmas musicianship? Not only that, but what makes YOU...........a better judge than Rush fans?

Quoting and altering someone's post can be a lot of fun though. LOL

I'm with you on that but have nothing against it either.  Of course I like a bit of avant and I know that one drives many people up the wall.

Maybe I went too far...I was a bit annoyed...think I'll go back and delete this one...it's just old history that seems to be popping up too much.

But thanks for agreeing!  Tongue

Done!!

Sorry Baldfriede for being a cranky old sod.

Bah, this is more than stupid. I did not question their musicianship at all; on the contrary, I think I made it quite clear that they are good musicians. My comment does not criticize the musicians or their abilities at all, it is directed at a certain kind of fanboys, especially the Peartians. Mark that I have nothing against people for whom Peart is their favorite drummer; that's their personal taste and fine with me.
But what I DO criticize are people who in certain drummer polls paint a picture like this:
1) Peart
.
.
.
.
.
.
Nothing for  a while.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Others..
There is nothing like that for ANY musician.  But do a search for drum polls, and you will often find this attitude among Peart fans. This is what I mean by "not as good as some of their fans put it". If Peart is your favourite drummer, fine; but there is absolutely no reason for belittling other drummers, as is done by comments like "Peart, who else?", a comment you will find several times in drum polls.
This was explained before in this thread; people should read before posting nonsense.

Fates Warning had a lot of potential, but there doesn't seem to be any record where they were firing on all cylinders. I've listened to Awaken the Guardian, Parallels, Perfect Symmetry, A Pleasant Shade of Grey, and Disconnected, and none of them were really all that wonderful. Guardian, unfortunately, had John Arch singing on it, Parallels and Perfect Symmetry were good but unmemorable and a little sterile, and they've only gone downhill from there. So unless No Exit is a masterpiece, I've kind of given up on Fates Warning.

I'm PriestofSadWings at Metal Archives.

Get The Spectre Within as fast as possible. I agree that Fates Warning are an incredibly hit-and-miss band, but The Spectre Within is that mythical album where they're firing on full cylinders and deserves every word of praise it has been awarded.

Sorry if I offended you, but I have a hard time understanding Gong's music.  To me, some of it seems like pointless experimentation or texture rather than good music.  Maybe you can help me appreciate what I'm missing while listening to them.

Are we talking the Daevid Allen incarnations?  You might me more amenable to Pierre Morelen's...
I enjoy both, but the latter appeals to me more.
