new age vs. metal? Are you kidding? Shouldn't Mikael win this by 300 votes already? I guess there are plenty of metal haters on the forum as well. We'll see.

Chart-wise:

Mikael Åkerfeldt has at least 4 albums in the top 100: The Human Equation (vocals), Still Life, BP, Ghost Reveries, and a couple Opeth albums not far behind.

Mike Oldfield seems to have 2 albums in the top 100, and a third album not far behind.

Who looks cooler?

It looks funny at first, but after it could be serious!

I like Opeth in some their works, and I like Oldfield in his early ( before new age) works. Anyway, voted for Opeth.

By the way, where are Jackson fans?Smile

Jackson. Neither of the other guys have made anything as brilliant as Thriller.

Seriously, Ååkke would've been a good pick as well but MJ deserved at least one vote.

Whoa whoa whoa. It's far too early to be making such outrageous claims.

Anyway, I voted for Oldfield. Amarok is my favorite album and has been since I discovered it a few months ago. Ommadawn is also a 5 star work while Tubular Bells, Hergest Ridge and Songs From Distant Earth are all great. I don't care that he made Earth Moving, he still made some of the best music out there. Also, I don't like Opeth, therefore I don't like Mikael at all. Unfortunately Mikael will win by a landslide for some reason that is beyond me.
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal.

If it's just the looks, I give it to Akerfeldt, but quite frankly he looks like a stuffed-shirt so full of himself he can't see past his moustache, and I'm being nice when I say it that way.  I rather like the contemplative, rainy day look of Oldfield on the Ommadawn cover.  M.J. just looks freaky.

If it's the music, that's another thing altogether.  And shouldn't a progger be ashamed to vote on basis of looks anyway?

I think the line drawn here will be mostly between fans of metal and fans of what the Archives calls Crossover Prog.  Presence on the top 100 is little different than any other such list - it is a matter of current popularity and nothing more.  Mariah Carey now has more #1 singles than the Beatles.  Does this make her better?  And she is certainly better looking than any of the Beatles, although Akerfeldt seems to think he's prettier.   I have heard nothing by Akerfeldt and Opeth that is nearly as visionary as what Oldfield has done.  If we want to list instruments and what not, Oldfield has it by a mile.  Here is the simplified list from Amarok: guitars of various kinds and styles, bazouki, mandolin, ukelele, glockenspiel, marimba, bagpipes, percussions, penny and other kinds of whistles, spoons, kalimba, bass, piano, occasional synths.  This is not to mention the vocals he has performed elswhere, or his composing and song-writing.  He had to hire extra musicians to finish Tubular Bells because he had so many edits of his own perfermances the master tape fell apart.  He has gone through many stages as an artist; Opeth has evolved somewhat, but not that much.  Everybody should listen to what they enjoy, no problem there, but in this poll, Oldfield is the man.
The world of sound is certainly capable of infinite variety and, were our sense developed, of infinite extensions. -- George Santayana, "The Sense of Beauty"

I don't care much for Mike Oldfield. Opeth is one of my favorite modern bands though, and Mikael Akerfeldt has written some great music. Mikael gets the vote.

I'd take Mikael Akerfeldt over almost any musician in existence besides Neal Morse.

Oldfield for me, though Akerfeldt is very talented.

I have almost all Oldfield's albums, and QE2, Five Miles Out and Discovery are amongst my favourites, though I know a lot of prog fans prefer his first 3. His guitar playing is marvellous.

I f*****g hate Michael Jackson with a passion (and for his music alone). He could dance, but his music is utter s***e.

Oldfield is good at what he does; but what he does is stock material. Perhaps not where rock was concerned, though. Surely, Tubular Bells was quite popular at the time due to The Exorcist film featuring it, but had it not been for that, would that song have launched Oldfield into real stardum? Honestly, I can't think of one Oldfield tune that stands out as truly brilliant, where as plenty of Opeth songs get that score from me.

Of course, this is all about taste, but I like Akerfeldt is a better songwriter, anyway. That's what matters most to me.

Anyone who calls Mike Oldfield's music "new age", while he only made one album in that 'style' (namely "The songs of distant earth") can't be taken seriously.

Akerfeldt by a large margin. I'll never understand MJs treatment as a great pop musician. He has some great pop songs, but his career as a whole is nothing special in my opinion. Oldfield is pretty bland.
