People who listen to prog tend to forget what they've learned so far. For a normal person a 40 minute song will be a couplet/refrein song that keeps on going and repeating itself. They don't have a clue, concerning intelligent composition forms.

I have had the same situations with people for many years. I am not a psychologist but it would appear that these types of people come in groups. So that can mean only one thing, that their motive is questionable. Everyone on this site is aware of the fact that many times, personal musical taste and or fear to except different musical art forms derives from upbringing. The unfortunate experience is with their rudeness. The ignorance that is displayed by these types of people has become as one with themselves. My analogy is that their decisions to place a wall between themselves and prog is something that has been re-enforced by parents since childhood. Ultimately, the environment one grows up in hovers like a black cloud over a child. Their decision to listen to the Beatles at the age of 6 could cause a parent to be overly concerned about their overall outcome.
For example, the Beatles are not socially excepted in our school district because of how Lennon was quoted in his Christ statement. This is one out of many mentalities that has been cemented into the communities life style. They are afraid to like Weather Report so they make fun of it. I have surpassed the emotionally charged state of mind that these people brought me to long ago. I just can't believe to this day how many will use their intelligence collectively in relaying hostile feelings towards prog. But I suppose that comes with the territory.

Well, clearly we are elitists, no? I've always felt that way, even if it's pig-headed and it means removing oneself from pop culture. I listen to both prog and Irish trad the same way - loud and proud. At work, in the car, in public, it suits me fine. :)

I guess I must be lucky, most of my friends (male) like Prog, must be something with my generation, we all grew up listening to Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis, PFM, Camel, Gentle Giant, Zappa, Rush, Dixie Dregg ... then came the Neo with Marillion, and progressive metal with Iron Maiden and Dream Theater, ... we have all the same taste, well we can listen to almost anything, except for my wife, and other female friends, they like it but only as a background, not too loud, they all prefer dance music. Is it mainly a man thing ?

I have some friends who's really into prog, but most people I know doesn't like it at all. I played Magma's "De Futura" for a friend of mine (I didn't dare until we were really drunk though) and he thought the whole thing sounded like 'a bizarre nazi-march' 
Occasionally, I put some RIO classics on, like Present's Triskaidčkaphobie only to get the response 'this sounds like hell'..

My roommate gets unhealthy doses of everything from the most "socially acceptable" prog to Magma, not to mention classical music and jazz. He doesn't have any appreciation for any of it, unfortunately. Not much he can do about it though, so it all works out well in the end.

Some friend of mine always makes a joke saying
"why don't you put that band of yours... Old Traford...?" you know... that soccer stadium of Manchester that is called "The Theater of Dreams"...
But no... my friends has only and idea of prog because of me... some of them has "Take Away my Pain" on his Ipod... but then is the most non DT song... so I give up... the more I put is only pop metal from the 80's... they are not prepared for prog man....!!!

Same here...!  Here in my job they always stares at me and tell me that they're really nervious cause of my "Mario Bros" kind of music... that is too fast a too crazy and if I can turn down the volume... I do not... but is sad to be that lonely... jajaja...

It is a very rare occasion when I play prog for anyone but myself. My friends don't like it. If I play it for my wife, then I know I will be getting some Madonna or Mega Dance Classics vol 33 or some garbage like that. Not worth it.
I am playing prog for my kids and they like most of it!  |

Pretty much the only 2 people I can play my favorite music for, without fear of criticism, is my only younger brother, and my father.
My brother sometimes doesn't realize what he is listening to is good at first (as a lot of people do) but he usually pulls through.
My father is down right proud, and impressed with my musical interests. Sometimes I think he's just thankful that I don't listen to the Radio (some of the crap they play today... :S )
As far as friends are concerned, I havn't really found anyone that I want to play music for... every time I have in the past, I get the same handful of responses "this sounds like random noise", "this makes me want to kill myself", "this sounds cheesey", or my personal favorite "are you listening to Videogame music?"
Never fails, no matter what band it seems... it always sounds like a video game.
Kind of frustrating, because I find the production, and writing quality to be substantially greater (most of the time) that the Midi quality music of say... early to somewhat recent Final Fantasy type titles. Although, I won't lie, I still enjoy a good Video game Tune.

That's my master plan in life... have some youngters and fill their heads with grandiose prog. :D

A great plan if I do say so myself! You've discovered the method to my madness!! I was never prouder when my little one came home from school last week and told me about her violin class. The teacher asked everyone who they liked to listen to. The answers were, Kelly Clarkson, Miranda Costgrove etc. One child said "Pink Floyd". The teacher asked who said that and my kid raised her hand. She was asked how does she know of Pink Floyd and her answer was, "My Daddy and I listen to them together". I am a very proud prog Papa!!

I think it's been oft said that listening to prog is like reading a book- it's done alone, in a comtemplative fashion. (Or maybe it's just that prog nerds don't have friends, sob.)
Putting your Ipod on shuffle when friends are over for a party is great, but not so much when Maudlin Of The Well may come lurching out from amongst The Strokes and Whit Stripes at any moment and kill the party. But I have to say from personal experience that rap music tends to go down even worse with white executive types from the oiffce- oh sh*t, it's NWA, mad dash across the lounge for the skip button. "I LISTEN TO IT FOR THE PRODUCTION!" I cry.

as someone has already said Magma i played mekanik to a group of friends around for dinner a few yrs ago the silence was deafening and the looks were sort of pitying anyway I liked it but I think as has also been said prog is a solo gig really well is for me. Mind you my wife likes earth wind n fire comodores etc and we ve been married 27 yrs so mixed marriages do work.
