Rio to stage 2016 Olympic Games

Brazil will become the first South American country to host the Olympics after Rio de Janeiro is chosen to stage the 2016 Games.

Congrats to Brazil.  I had mixed feelings about the Olympics in Chicago.  Chicago is only about 5 hours away, so I think that I would have probably made an effort to go as either a spectator or as a volunteer.  The Olympics is one of those once in a lifetime events that I think would be neat to be a part of.  The Olympics in Rio will be watched from the confines of my family room, and I will be more than glad to save the expense that I would have incurred travelling to and staying in Chicago.

About 400 miles or so (a short hop in US terms!).

For the Olympics, the team is Great Britain (oddly, not the United Kingdom). For the Commonwealth Games, the constituent countries of the UK enter enter as separate nations. The 2012 games are therefore hosted by Great Britain (The UK) while the 2014 games are hosted by Scotland.

I'm quite happy about Rio getting it for a few reasons.
First, this is the first time for South America.
Second, I'm in the same time zone so I can watch the games live.
Third, all other countries hosted an Olympic games in recent history
And last but not least are the multitudes of good-looking Brazilian ladies bound to make many appearances on camera.
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal.

I am looking forward to that. We need both jobs and half naked female beach volleyball players here in Glasgow. That would give the foxes something to watch.........

The right decision for the right reasons - roll on Rio 2016, and maybe we could have a RIO festival there as well!

I didn't want it in Chicago. From what I hear, it is always a nightmare for the host city, and I don't think we can afford building a whole new complex at the moment...
