People, help me get into Van der Graaf... I listened to Pawn Hearts and it's just average. The songs sound like they were made by force, just to make a long progressive track.

Pawn Hearts is VDGG's most extraordinary album (and my personal favorite of them). But if you want to get into the band, you could try Godbluff, which is more straight forward than Pawn Hearts but still very VDGG-ish. You could also check out part of H to He, Who Am The Only One. Songs like Lost and House With No Door are pretty accesible for VDGG songs. On the other hand, if you know you'll never be able to understand Pawn Hearts' music, VDGG probably is not the right band for you. Or maybe it just requires more listens, I really disliked A Plague Of... in the beginning, but now I think it's one of the greatest tracks ever made.

Camel Dream Theater: The ones that I like are the covers from a Change of Seasons!
As for Camel: For mere curiosity I bring home "I can see your house from here" years ago. I tried it two or three times... and no, really I can't stand it. Anyone wants this CD? is practically new! I may be wrong but I can't even understand why this is labeled as prog.

Yeah, I first tried to listen to pawn hearts and I only liked fragments, much of it was too spaced out or what to call it... Then I picked up Godbluff and since I had heard that their music was dark, moody and emotional I decided to listen to it by myself one night. The music was fantastic! For me, it's a band I have to listen to when I am in the right mood

I Can See Your House... is the lowest rated Camel album on PA. We write reviews here on PA so you could read what the people think of the album, then, based on whether you liked the audio clip you heard and read good reviews, you go and buy it.
Buy their debut, it is a great album, way better than I Can See Your House...

Thanks for the answers. I think I'll just try a few times more and then check out other albums.
I had a similar thing with Close to the Edge by Yes. I heard it for the first time a week ago and first I didn't like it. But with each day I realized this music really has emotions in it, and now I think it's pretty good and really worth listening. A few more weeks and I'll probably start to love it ;)

The site policy is to add every album from all bands included, prog or not. I Can See Your House From Here displays the poppy side of Camel, you could have better success with albums like Mirage, The Snow Goose, Moonmadness, Rajaz or A Nod and a Wink, for example.

Although I Can See Your House From Here is the lowest rated Camel album, it has Ice, which is easily one of my favorite Camel tracks (pun intended ).

Yeah, Ice alone is worth the price and Hymn to Her is one of my Camel favourites as well. It's mostly a decent album overall but it has two of the absolute worst Camel tracks ever in Neon Magic and especially Remote Romance. As a whole that's possibly the last album I'd recommend for the first Camel experience, so I understand Manuelmoreno's reaction.

whatever "Pawn Hearts" is, it is certainly NOT average. for the time it was made in it is an extreme album. now you can either think it is extremely bad or extremely good, but average? no way. if you listen closely to the tracks you will notice that there are recurring themes and a merging of themes too; for example: at the end of "Man-Erg" VdGG mix the slow part and the fast part, playing two riffs at the same time. this is a specialty of them; it occurs in several songs. you can tell by this that the songs are carefully constructed and certainly not forced together. and a song like "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" is no more forced together than "Supper's Ready". on the contrary, "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" was the inspiration for "Supper's Ready", as Genesis themselves uttered in an interview once (Genesis and VdGG were label mates back then). the structure is almost the same, especially at the beginning

Listen to H to He. My favorite track: Emperor in his War Room.

I remember all the hoopla Damnation got when it came out. "Finally, an Opeth album for the 'prog crowd'," etc. I didn't hear what everyone else heard, I guess.
