Two bands: Tangerine Dream and Ayreon.
Tangerine Dream: I confess I never went beyond the Rubycon, but well, I'm no Julius Caesar
Seriously, I couldn't hear any melody, just sounds.
Ayreon: I bought the debut and really hated it.
There are other acts that are not amongst my favorites: Rush, Frank Zappa, the Flower Kings and Dream Theater, but all of these artists have at least done some things that are really great in my ears, so that I'll stick with the first two bands I mentioned.
(Edit for the typo) |
That's exactly what I love about the early Tangerine Dream: That they were just sounds. They started to get boring for me when they became more melodious. The last album of them I can listen to is "Poland", after that they became unbearable for me, because the "just sounds" parts were completely gone from their music.

Yes, I'm not surprised, and I think that's the beauty, the essence of that band in a way. I don't doubt at all that TD were a very good band in their early days, but it's just not a band for me, not for my taste. |
You should at least check out Stratosfear (1976), Force Majeure (1979), Pergamon and Tangram (both 1980). A lot of groundbreaking music (IMHO) on those, and by the late '70s/early '80s TD was tops for great new synth sounds. And the music became very melodic with the addition of Johannes Schmoelling in 1980. He really helped define the second half of their best decade ('75-'85). |
Thanks for the suggestions! I'm going to write those down. I'm curious if I can get into TD after all.

Wise words, Aragorn. Boring...
That's three of my favourite bands dissed in one sentence - a first for me even on PA

It's not that I can't find worth in anything, it's just that I can't find worth in enough.

I couldn't get into Porcupine Tree. Rush I never was a big fan, although in limited quantities they are starting to grow on me.
The Mars Volta: really don't care for most of their work, but I think Deloused in the Comatorium is a great album. That one clicked with me, their others don't

Well, since it's Dream Theater, not Theatre, I guess you aren't putting my favorite band in the dust

King Crimson. i quite like them but I don't love them.
I only like parts of ITCOTCK, Starless, Islands.
I quite like Poseidon and most of Larks and Red, but the latter 2 aren't what I call great, but mainly pretty good

Asia is one band I just can't seem to 'get'. I picked up the Alpha album a while back out of the bargain bin, and it just sounds horribly dated to my ears. It displays all the bad things about music from the 80's.

With science, you can turn a frog into a Ph.D. and you still have the frog you started with.

Isis: Supposedly they're making music out of complex philosophical concepts, but all I hear is Radiohead-style 1990s depressive rock with growls and more guitar distortion... and I can get into other artsy sludge metal bands like The Melvins, Neurosis and Pelican.
Mastodon: Extremely talented musicians whom I respect for having a truly unique style that utterly defies existing genres, but their style is just not one I find interesting beyond the novelty factor.
Opeth: I should in theory like these guys, but in practice I find their combination of death metal and prog rock clichés way too literal and clumsy so the whole thing feels rather stiff and lifeless to my ears almost like they're meant to be a stealthy deadpan parody of the entire "progressive metal" concept.

1. You must realize Asia ISN'T a popular prog band here 2. You must also realize Asia isn't even prog I do agree it sounds very dated at times, but they have produced some of the best POP music ever.

I'm thinking you just don't like progressive metal in general...

Why based on these examples, and his claim regarding Opeth that in theory he should like those guys, and that he respects Mastodon? Former topics of his have indicated that he likes plenty of progressive metal (though I'm sure he has his preferred forms of progressive metal -- he has said that he doesn't like "artsy sludge metal").

I second Isis and Mastodon....I've tried a couple of their albums and they did absolutely nothing for me.

I haven't really heard enough Mastodon, or tried to get into it, but I felt that I was not ready for it -- not ready enough to really "get it". I rather feel that I lack sufficient experience with that musical language/ idiom to really appreciate it. Incidentally, I did like Thordendal's Special Defects (particularly due to the jazz influence).
I know you're just making a joke, but it's so automatic for me to spell theater with the "re" end-spelling that for quite some time I had to really think about spelling it with "er". Be much the same with a band called Color or The Specializers (if not thinking I might spell it Colour or The Specialisers. Regarding Magma (a band that many seem to try and fail at enjoying), have you heard the band's first two albums, ProGR72? I think those jazzy ones could appeal to you.

No, you misread my post... I'm sorry if it came across as sarcastic, but I said I liked some of the "prog-sludge" stuff and came with some examples of bands in that niche I happen to like. However, with Isis it's like the art rock influences and the sludge metal influences cancel each other out instead of complementing each other like with Neurosis. EDIT: Actually, the dude who said I didn't like prog metal in general is at least on the right track... I like a lot of bands that were obviously from before the border between metal and the harder end of prog rock was clearly drawn, heavy metal and prog rock being my two favourite genres after all (with post-punk a close third) but as for music that deliberately straddles the line most of that I've heard rubs me the wrong way. As for why, that probably deserves its own thread in the prog blogs forum.

I don't care. I just like some bands which other people call prog.
