There are currently 4500+ artist in the archive, the number is increasing every day. Have you ever been wondering how many of them are listed in Prog Metal, how many Symphonic bands is there, is there more psychedelic or avant bands? Well.

Here's the current situation:

Zeuhl 35

Indo/Raga 37

Proto Prog 39

Canterbury 48 

Prog Electronic 133

Krautrock 144

Experimental/post metal 153

Post/math rock 157

Tech/Extreme Prog Metal 157

Prog Related 160

Heavy Prog  212

Rock Progressivo Italiano 224

RIO/Avant 239

Folk 257

Crossovoer Prog 262

Eclectic Prog 262

Psychedelic/space 284

Neo Prog 287

Jazz Rock/fusion 378

Prog Metal 411

Symphonic Prog 424


Any surprises? I'm surprised by a coincidence that many subgenres "tie" so to say: an equal number of Eclectic and Crossover bands, as well of Post/Math rock and Tech/Extreme Metal bands.


I dare to say subgenres are populated more or less equally, on four levels:


1. Subgenre giants: Symphonic Prog (424), Prog Metal (narrowed) (411), Jazz Rock (378).


At the current rate of addition, Prog Metal will probably kick Symphonic Prog off the trone in a few days. And that's only a subgenre of Prog Metal in narrower sense.


2. Indermediate populated prog subgenres level: Heavy prog (212), RPI (224), Avant prog (239), Prog Folk (257), Crossover (262), Eclectic (262), Psyche (284), Neo prog (287).


Mostl likely Neo prog will increase even further due to widened definition of the subgenre.


3. Less populated Prog subgenres: Progressive electronic (133), Krautrock (144), Experimental/Post metal (153), Post/Math Rock (157), Tech/Extreme Metal (157), Prog Related (160).


I guess both metal subgenres and post/math rock will contonue to significantly incrise. The position of Prog Related artists is interesting; too few, or too many?


4. "Dwarf" subgenres: Zeuhl (35), Indo Raga (37), Proto Prog (39), Canterbury (48).


Each of those deserves more recognition. I thought Indo/Raga rock is the smallest category, but it turned out Zeuhl is. However, it seems Zeuhl have much more devotees.


If we add all three Art Rock subcategories together, that's 736 artists. If we do the same with three Metal categories together, that's 721 artist. Wow. I really shoud check everything after a week or two to see the rate of growth. 



If we add post/rock to 721 metal artists that's 878 post-'90 artists and nobody can say prog is not alive and well nowadays! (this is a rough approximation based only on post-80's subgenres but it's enough to illustrate prog is far from being dead.)


Surprised? Shocked? Happy?


(I was not doing the percentages, my knowledge of Excel is horrible, sorry)

Interesting graph. Rather worrying that Prog-related and Proto-Prog together account for over 200 entries here when other Prog genres seem under- represented.

I think the main problem with PR is not so much the high-profile bands (who are, in fact, a minority), but the glut of acts that were added in the first days of the site, without any sort of 'quality control', or moved from other subgenres after 'cleanup' sessions - seen as entries cannot be deleted. I think PR would need to be gone through with a fine-toothed comb, in order to weed out those bands or artists that have very little to do with prog, and possibly have them deleted (especially since many of them hardly have any reviews or other information).

Is it that they are under-represented? Or are the numbers just not there? Assuming that all members have been bringing bands they know for sometime, perhaps we are nearing that absolute of complete inclusion. The reality may be that the Prog-related and Proto-Prog do account for a high percentage simply as a result of fact and nothing else.

That's really neat!

Like you said, I was surprised that Zeuhl was the absolute lowest, and I didn't realize Jazz Fusion was that high overall.

No surprises. Zeuhl, Indo/Raga and Canterbury as seen as many as part of broader genres and not a genre per se, so they have to be smallest genres in the site.

In an interesting note, the huge difference in size between Prog Related and Proto-Prog shows that maybe the site should focus more on Proto additions rather than Related, since Proto-Prog is usually less controvertial, more relevant content to the site and I see it as much more important than PR.

If you add Symph and Neo you get 711 ... add in RIP and it becomes 935

I'm quite sure psych/space made a big step forward as for the ranking during the last months Smile  and we have a backlog of at least 50 bands/artists so far Shocked
