I don't think Rush has released a definitive masterpiece. But from "A farewell to kings" to "Power Windows" all those are incredible records. "Moving Pictures" is a bit overrated though.

As for Queen , their second album is out of this world. But I have noticed that in Argentina Queen and Pink Floyd have some godly like status and can't be touched , the same with The Beatles among non prog fans.

King Crimson
Marillion (Fish era)
Opeth
Most popular Neo I've heard
Los Jaivas
Deep Purple
New Trolls
Banco
Jethro Tull

Just off the top of my head.

And I don't dislike any of these bands (cept maybe the Trolls), I just find them to be often rated more generously than I would, which I think is the OP's question....

I think King Crimson is overrated, I like a few of their songs but having purchased four of their albums, I don't get it.

. . . and for the life of me I can't figure out how Lark's Tongue is in the top 50.  I have listened to it so many times trying to understand what the fuss is.  Nothing.

I also think Yes is overrated, again, they have a few good songs, but I don't think they're worthy of the hype.

Finally, I go with Marillion.  I know they carried the torch when few others did and they (according to some) spawned the Neo-prog genre but I don't get them.

I don't have an unnatural obsession with Disney Princesses, I have a fourteen year old daughter and coping mechanisms.

I don't think many of the standard prog bands are overrated because outside of the prog community they are highly underrated (I.e. A random person on the street will most likely not even know of the band Camel)

That being said I think a lot of 80s-90 rock is overrated especially Nirvana.

for me.. would cause a sh*t storm but for none of this being a surprise......the usual cast and crew...

f**king Camel - nice group... nice music... an absolute blip on the radar for any kind of importance or consequence in prog.  What's worse.... they aren't even the best of that unchallenging sedate prog. The singer is attrocious... the band is *in relative prog terms* average, and the music.....  yawn.  At least Genesis was challenging... in it's own subtle ways.

speaking of..

Genesis - how their albums are, with exception of one,  completely overrated on the site.  Don't agree.. look at the Lamb.. even people who like the album aknowledge the 2nd disk is a mess.  Doesn't stop that from being a HIGHLY ranked album.  God forbid in that happened to say... Tarkus if 50% of the material was judged.. subpar.   Anyhow... overrated in my book . not on the massive order as Camel is of course. If it's a Genesis album... and not pop..  you'll find it in the top 100.  Good or bad.. that is overrated.

Jethro Tull - agree with some writers out there...  their prog stuff with one major exception is 2nd rate at best and mediocre at best.  The group was best and never topped the first 4 albums.

Porcupine Tree-  interesting early stuff...  later stuff barely counts as progressive to these ears.. not to say it isn't good... but this is a prog site... we get paid to say the emporer has no clothes.  That is why SW's solo album surprised me so...  it was a departure from PT... and a damn fine album it is.

Yeah, how could you! I never understood the genius there , good but certainly not great! Same for Neal Morse, a talented accomplished musician but nothing to goo-goo over! DT is not in there because they are not overrated , they are rated as a once-genius band (this by their fans) . Rush is not overratable because it is huge (just like the other prog 1/4 century institutions). As for Fish , have you ever seen him live? WOW!

Twice, in the mid 80s.  They were OK, just not great to me.  Listening to them now, they seem even more ho-hum.  They sure make Gabriel era Genesis sound like the real thing. Wink

Porcupine Tree - They have some good songs and some great albums, but that's it. I don't really see what differentiates them from many other good bands. They have some really terrible stuff too.

Others but thats by far the most overrated I can think of right now.

Sleepytime Gorilla museum! One of the biggest musical disppointments of my life! They're not intellectual, nor technical, nor thought provoking! I''ll tell you what they are, a joke! A really bad, poorly aimed joke!

Theater prog! Music that sounds like it belongs on broadway! Goofy vocals and instrumentation, childish lyrics, and all around bad music. It doesny even strike me as avant garde, in fact, I would be embarrased if someone were to catch me listening to them. Just gross!

Also Neal Morse... But I don't even want to open up that can of worms.

Ha you know whats funny? I bought both "Of natural History", and Neal Morse's "One" on the same day.
