What are some bands that everyone in the entire world seems to rave about (here or elsewhere) but you really just can't grasp??? For me that list is:

RUSH!!! I bought Moving Pictures, it's an OK album, but what's so god damn great about it??? The emotions are shallow and fake, the songs are poppy, the synths are cheesy, and it sounds like someone stuck Geddy's balls in a meat grinder when he was 2...

Slayer, the most overrated metal group of all time...

Ayreon, I totally respect this guy for what he does as well as respecting the individual singers/musicians, but I just find his music REALLY annoying.

Dream Theater, I literally walked out after enduring a half an hour of their concert. It was pretty horrible. That said, they're talented musicians, but they're so mechanical yet cheesy. Oh, and James LaBrie is my all time least favorite vocalist.

Marillion, Another just OK band. They're music is SO cheesy and unoriginal... not for me.

Tangerine Dream. I found this band to be very boring. Although, if I were to need to sleep, I'd put that record on in a second. There is MUCH more beautiful yet equally as mellow music.

Lamb of God, I'll put this on here just because I have several friends who are just obsessed with them. They're so ridiculously mediocre it's not funny!

Oh, I forgot to put IN MY OPINION ©.

Jake

I have somehow acquired 6 Rush albums over the last few years. There's about one CD's worth of interesting material buried in there.

but...Rush's music follows established progressive rock song structures only with a hard rock edge, they're obviously good!

I pretty much agree with all except Rush, many do have a problem with Geddys voice. You may not like the bands material but Rush are some the greatest musicians ever in rock. And Early Tangerine Dream is really good like Phaedra and  Rubycon.

Led Zeppelin is a band I think is respected more for what they influenced than for their actual music. It's not that they're bad, it's just that everything they did their imitators did much better. I don't get that feeling when listening to similar contemporary bands like Black Sabbath.

Actually, pretty much ever imitator of Led Zeppelin has been much much worse than them.

my 'Acadamy for the Overrated' contains the following:

Ayreon
The Mars Volta
Opeth
Savatage
King Diamond
(much of) Rhapsody

I've tried all of those names, but without success..Unhappy

The Mars Volta can't be more overrated. They've released one decent album, one mediocre one and two atrocities... yet they're heralded as the second coming....

Of course Sigur Ros... even if one person likes the, that's too much.

King Crimson had its moments but its god-like stature is too much....

Among many more...

I forgot to mention Dream Theater, probably the most overrated band on the site. I will admit they are great musicians.

I am afraid that you are all confusing 'overrated' with what you don't like.... Very few people here would mention as overrated a band or artist they actually like, but don't consider as the proverbial second coming.

Personally, if I had to mention just one name, I'd go for Camel - a band I like (I own six albums by them, and listen to them with relative frequency). Very good band and all that, but worshipped by some people here way beyond their merits.

Oh it is so much easier to get people to hate than to love.

Here's my list.

Pink Floyd
Kansas
Gentle Giant
Van der Graaf Generator
Harmonium
Banco del Mutuo Succorso

Special honorary mention to Magma, as our Magmites tend to go way over the top.

My opinion is that Camel is UNDERRATED. There you go I said it. I ve'been pretending to like those ELP w*kers for way too long. Now Moonmadness , thats a record I can enjoy all day long without caring for anything else. And the fact that there are no Camel albums in the top ten is disrespectful at the very least.Angry

As for overrated bands:

Queen
Beatles
Queensryche
Pink Floyd
Uriah Heep
Tool
Marillon ( Specially Fish)
Kansas

I'll have to agree with Queen there...

I do think Rush is overrated as a Prog band.

Wurdah Phillip. Angry Magmites are de hundin!

But seriously, I liked your review of MDK.  http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=155993

Just as Magma is over-the-top, so are the fans commonly.  We're in the spirit of the music one might say.  And one can never overrate Magma when it comes to its importance to Zeuhl.

I'll post the last paragraph of your review with some poor changes in brackets.

"[Magma fans are] pompous, bombastic, overblown, challenging, and totally in the spirit of the '70's progressive [bowel] movement while breaking [wind]. 4 stars [at least]."

As for my subjective pick of overrated band (really an artist's work) based on fan reaction, I'll go with anything Neal Morse has been involved with.  I don't think N. Morse is the musical genius that I've seen a number of people claim at this site and in other places.
