USA by a large margin. Besides the original giants don't find much quality in the UK.

I agree - "Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis, King Crimson, ELP, Moody Blues, Procol Harum, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, The Beatles, Rainbow, Soft Machine, Led Zeppelin, Camel, Gentle Giant, Van Der Graaf Generator, Caravan, Jethro Tull".... indeed, many amazing musicians there, and plenty more to boot. But how many times can you listen to ITCHYCOCK or Aqualung after nearly 40 years?
Don't get me wrong; those bands paved the way and created classics that will stand for many decades to come; but what about this century? I'm much more interested in bands like Espers, Sleeping in Gethsemane, Faun Fables, Melora Creager, This Will Destroy You, the Residents, Kayo Dot or anything else that's come out since color television was invented, including many great newer bands from central Europe and Scandinavia.
The old classics will always have their place and the UK will always be the place where prog music bloomed broadest; but that doesn't mean that's where the most interesting prog and experimental music is coming from now. It's really coming from all over the place. Even metal from Tunisia (Myrath) and neo from Malta (Different Strings). There haven't been borders on music since the wall came down and we achieved the ability to send it around electronically.
Now as for where the best cars come from, that's a different story....

Color television came to prominence in the 1950s. As a younger prog fan most of the modern stuff leaves me cold (damn technology taking all the character out of music). I feel I must listen to the old blokes to get anything with true character. Titan, out of NY, is one of the few interesting newer bands out there and this is because they play throwback, less polished sounding, music.

Dang, it's hard to choose. I think I'm going to vote for US. Tool is such a favorite that they practically make up for everything else. Zappa and DT too. Plus, the US has all the good progressive metals.

The television reference was a bit of hyperbole to make a point  Really, "damn technology"? The mellotron was a outgrowth of technology, albeit a primitive one. Many of Bob Dylan's fans jeered when he veered away from 'traditional' instrumentation in favor of electric guitars. Yes and ELP wouldn't have been half the bands they were without the electronic wizardry that went into their various keyboards and synthesizers. It was 24-bit digital mastering that allowed most of us to hear ITCHYCOCK in all its true glory after it was remastered just a few years ago. Technology has been a part of prog music since the Moody Blues realized they could produce most of an orchestra with keyboards instead of using the real thing (if not before then - more hyperbole, you see). Titan? If you like those guys you should check out Dead Meadow, Espers, Explosions in the Sky, Caspian, Esmerine,..... Speaking of technology BTW, I see these are the credits for Titan's last album: dave - drum. set.

My "damn technology" was in rooted in the frustration I feel over music that is too clean and processed sounding. I know that technology can only make a band boring if the band themselves allow it to. I enjoy Titan because they sound older and I will check out those other bands you mentioned, hopefully they'll be using modern means to recapture 70s sound (this I have no problem with). But even if I enjoy these groups I'm not throwing my beloved UK classics under the bus for someone new and shiney.
I have a feeling even if the instrumentals are there the vocals will be lacking because the biggest problem with most modern music is the loss of the unique vocalist. Sorry to say also that British vocal have always tended to be more interesting and we Yanks seem to have been programmed to sing all alike (at least these days). Actually, as I hear it, there are 3 different singing styles these days but I don't feel like getting into that right now.
One other thing the Brits will always have over US (oo double meaning) is Prog Folk. Don't bother trying to compare an American folk group to Tull or Strawbs. Don't want to angry up my blood  Oh, and if there is a Canterbury in one of our fine states then where the hell is it's musical output? Running a bit of a fever, hope I wasn't rambling insanely.

it's proto and early prog where the states shine; Beach Boys, Zappa, Touch, Butterfly, Beaver&Krause, not to mention some of my very favorites in the symph arena as Yezda Urfa, Happy the Man, Eccentric Orbit, many others
