Hi, friends.
Despite the resume on Prog Archives, I would like to know your opinion about this wonderful Prog Band.
When and your feelings when you heard them at the first time. Your favorite albuns and music. Favorites members. Worst albums etc.
I think that there will be a lot of good and inteligent answers here.
Thanks.

I love Camel!
Their classical phase are superb! Itīs very difficult to me choise one of the 3 master pieces: MIRAGE, SNOWGOOSE and MOONMADNESS. Three of the Great Prog albums from all the time! And the midle period is the weakest to me with the albums ICSYHFH and SF.
And I love the Latimer/Colin era. The 4 albums from this period are great, modern and very soulful.
Latimer has one of my favorite guitar works, and all the other musicians are great!
They are the number 4 band in my Top Prog Ranking

Yeah, I love Camel too. Hearing the White Rider some four or five years ago blew my mind and since then I've been collecting pretty much all the Camel stuff I've gotten my hands on. Of course I love The Big Three from Mirage to Madness, but I think Rajaz and a Nod and a Wink are just as good. Five star albums all of them. I like all their albums to some degree and even the weakest (Breathless, Your House, Single Factor) have some fantastic songs on them. My favourite prog band.

Fave albums:
#1 Camel s/t (Six Ate) #2 Moonmadness (Chord Change) #3 Snow Goose and Rain Dances (Rhayader and One of this Days..) #4 Mirage and Rajaz(Lady Fantasy and Sahara) #5 Breathless and A Nod and a Wink (The Sleeper and For Today) Camel is a great band, often underrated. They have changed through genres a lot, and I like that quite a lot, of course in a good way. |

Camel are the best band ever, IMO and The Snow Goose is the best album ever (ask me next week and I might say Moonmadness!). I've never met anyone who doesn't like it.
Only Mostly Autumn, Genesis, IQ, Horslips and Runrig get anywhere near as much play on my CD player. Edited by Hercules - December 03 2008 at 14:50 |

I love Camel. Especially their older work, as collected on sampler Echoes and on their live album A Live Record. I also like Nude a lot, and even The Single Factor.
As the years go by, I appreciate Camel even more and more.

I actually haven't heard anything by them, but Moonmadness just came in the mail and so I'll give that a spin as soon as I get a chance.

'Moonmadness' is one of the greatest prog albums ever recorded! Latimer and Bardens were at their collaborative best at that stage of Camel's grand career. Soon after, "Snow Geese" (is that the name?) was not nearly as good. Either Latimer or Bardens had left, and the band basically lost its soul... |

I might not be the best person to ask because they've been one of my favourite bands and I loved all the albums they did. Anyway, their best are the first four, with a little preference for Moonmadness. The original lineup is I think the best. After Ian Ferguson was replaced by Richard Sinclair, they became more Jazzy and sometimes Genesis like. The period between Breathless and Single Factor (this last their worst album for sure), is when Mr Latimer lost Peter Bardens first, then Andy Ward remaining the only band's "owner", something similar to what Waters tried to do with Pink Floyd. Stationary Traveller in 1984, was a surprise, even if there's too much Fairlight as was usual in the 80s. This now makes it sound dated. After a lawsuit with his major, Latimer produced some good things like Harbour of tears and the old-style prog Rajaz, that's in my opinion, impressively one of the best things ever published under the Camel brand.
a hint: on www.camelproductions.com you can download for free a song called "Never let go". It's nt the well-known Camel classic, but a sort of elegy written by Andy Latimer after Peter Barden's death. I have found it really moving.

Another hint. If you really love Camel, and have already listened to all their production includung bootlegs, try Bellaphon. Thet are the Camel's Japanese clones. Nothing new, but nothing bad.

I discovered Camel in a backwards kind of way. Whilst at University, someone I knew had a lot of bootleg cassettes, and he lent a few to me. One was by Camel, and I really liked it (it subsequently turns out that this became a semi-official album 'On The Road 1981' I think).
I investigated further, and due to the era, 1984, I purchased Stationary Traveller, and as a follow up, Pressure Points Live. Got Nude, as tracks from this appeared on the cassette version of On The Road. Then there followed a backwards search through the catalogue, to discover wonders like Snow Goose, Mirage, Moonmadness etc...saving the best for last. But I still have a soft spot for Stationary Traveller, which doesn't generally seem to be a favourite amongst Camel fans. Great band, definitely one of may favourites, and my most played band on LastFM.com. Edited by Takeshi Kovacs - December 23 2008 at 05:27 |

![]() my opinion... '2nd division' prog, though not bad. Comitted the GRAVE sin of being eliminating ELP in a contest here, so damned to hell for all eternity in the eyes of some hahhaa f**king Camel ![]() that said... big thumbs up for Latimer on the geetar... great player. A big thumbs down for his vocals... even bigger thumbs down for the group not utilizing fully a great vocalist in Richard Sinclair when they got one, like on Raindances ![]() ![]() favorite album... Snow Goose.. least.. the aforementioned Raindances Edited by micky - December 23 2008 at 10:37 |

Many won't agree with me but I rate Dust and Dreams, Harbour of Tears and A nod and a Wink the best of the Camel albums although I do enjoy their earlier work as well. Loved them for the past 25 odd years. The first album of theirs that I owned was Raindances and the next - The Snowgoose.

![]() ![]() ![]() In my view, Ward is the standout player, though Bardens and Latimer both have their moments every now and then. Not very fond of Doug Ferguson's bass. |

Haven't listened to this band in a long while...Mirage is my favorite, and I really enjoy the Snow Goose as well.
And, like Rob, I just can't get excited about Moonmadness, it's not terrible or anything, just doesn't contain anything that would make me say "ooh! I really want to put this on!" Camel are just so neutral for me - do not evoke a tremendous amount of excitement nor do they make me cringe in disgust. Edited by NaturalScience - December 23 2008 at 10:47 |
