Funny, I voted for Rush based on their multitude of albums that came after the first one.

True, but Rush was influenced by Zeppelin, so I'll go with the original. I am a Rush fan as well.

...that doesn't mean anything...
they were also influenced by Cream and Yes along with many others...
so I guess Muddy Waters is better than Hendrix?

While the influence on the first album was significant (an understatement, really), I feel Rush progressed beyond the influence - even as early as 2112 and certainly on Farewell I don't think of Zeppelin at all. Certainly Zep's debut along with Cream were instrumental influences for Geddy and Alex, and Neil was doing Who covers for the gig he had before Rush.

No, actually it means a lot my friend, Rush were inspired by the zepps to a larger extent, the instruments, the brand of heavyness in Rush music, owe much to Zepp's, of course Rush were not going to be a Zep clonesm, so they progressed, but the influences are there.
they were also influenced by Cream and Yes along with many others...
Of course but i you hear carefully the first album and the Fly by Night album, they owe very much to the Led Zepps
so I guess Muddy Waters is better than Hendrix?
Waters make raw basic blues that influece a lot in Hendrix play and Hendrix never deny that origin.
Hendrix actually improve the influected blues origin with other types of music like jazz and rock of course.
Is not the question who is better or not.
it's a matter of taste.

What about the 17 studio albums that came after that?
|
The influences of Led Zep in Rush i think lives until the A Farewell to Kings came.
In 2112 sounds hint of the heavyness of Zep, example? The Temple of Syrinx.
In 2112 sound the delicate ballad acoustic influence of Zepp example: Tears.
And to clarify to all die hard Rush fans: influence is not equal to copy. ok??
Then like they said in his first double album a first chapter is close, and a new chapter begin.

This is a no-brainer for me. Much like the Rush vs. Magma poll. Rush it is on both counts. I've been a big fan of Rush now for close to 20 years. I was never a big fan of Zep. I don't think I've made much of a secret about that either. They did two or three songs that I really like. "Battle of Evermore" and "No Quarter" come to mind, but otherwise, I think the hype was a lot bigger than the music deserved.
Yes, Rush did sound quite a bit like Zep on their first album, which is the primary reason that the first Rush albums is one of my least favorite albums by them. Fortunately, they left that all behind them and moved on to much greater things.

Though LZ best moments are really great.. |
Which is the prob for me with Zep, when they are good they are outstanding, when they are bad..........you can throw away about half of their songs. Rush I didnt like at first but grew into them, their albums starting from 2112 to Moving Pictures are consistently excellent and great prog, not to say that there are other great moments on the other albums....Mystic Rhythms anyone

Individually the members of Rush are, imo, more talented musicians. So much of LZ stuff sounds the same, Rush is constantly re-inventing their style and sound. So like in the previous Beatles poll, my vote goes for Rush. And as for Zep being an influence on Rush, I'm sorry, but what Led Zep song did they cover in their Feedback album, oh thats right, none...(no Beatles cover either) not to say they didnt influence Rush but maybe not as heavily as people asume.

I would like to point out to the OP that he made a mistake in this poll though. And I don't think I'm the first to discover it. Vote early, vote often!!!

No they do not HAVE to do a LZ cover. But when a band like Rush comes out with an album of cover songs from bands that they said had influenced them in their youth; it is an important observation that there is an absence of LZ. Especially when it seems that a lot of people think that with out Zepplin there would be no Rush.

Agree completely! 2112 was their last album to feature notable Zep influences.

Please Zach, listen to their first albums, Rush, Fly By Night, Caress of Steel and 2112, if you hear right, you can even look (if you can look to the music ) the Led Zepp influences, they are very clear like crystal, or if you do not mind i can put examples of these albums to see the Zepp's influences on rush early output.
So, when i said earlier, since A Farewell to Kings, Rush is out of Zepp's influence.
