You are totally foregetting the late 60s female singer Grace Slick. She sang in Jeffersson Airplane from 1967-1972.The band at their artyest point in their career played some kind of psychedelic proto-artrock...

I vote Kate Bush. I consider many of her works prog. And I don't care that she's not listed in the poll. |
Agree 100%
Kate Bush made some very progressive albums IMO. I love 'The Dreaming' album, and 'The ninth wave' suite on the 'Hounds of love' album is superb.

Kate has the most outstanding voice in the realm of pop/prog music.

"Their singer" is actually Sandy Denny, who lead also a short (RIP Sandy) but briliant solo career. Her voice is as beautiful as Maddy Prior's or Annie Haslam's.

Agreed Sandy had a lovely voice but outwith the prog scene the timeless beauty of Joni Mitchell's voice is unsurpassable.

I know they are not exactly progressive rock but IMO Medieval Baebes and Miranda Sex Garden (Gothic/Celtic/Folk) have a common denominator, the wonderful voice of Katharine Blake.
Excelent vocalist and closer to prog' than most people believe.

There are precious few in this male-dominated genre! Kate Bush or Annie Haslam gets the nod....
My fave overall (non-prog) female vox?
Annie Lennox
Maddy Prior
Kate Rusby
Karen Matheson
But Peter, you ask, who are the last two?
Peasants!

Maggie Riley (Mike Oldfield)
Agnes Buen Garnas & Mari Boine (Jan Garbarek group)
Sally Oldfield (Mike's sister)
Sarah MacLachlan
Björk
Carina Kjellberg (Evergrey)
Christine McVie & Stevie Nicks (Fleetwood Mac)
Vanessa Falabella & Paula Santoro (Sagrado coraçao da terra)
the various female singers who provide her vocals in the Cirque du Soleil's soundtracks

Annie Haslam for me, Maani summed up my reasons nicely.
Sonja Kristina a very close second though, very distinctive and atmospheric.
A couple of non prog ones - Karen Carpenter, now what could she have done with a good prog song? "Goodbye to love" gave some indication, but she had a wonderful voice. She started off singing in a higher key, it was only when it was suggested in the studio that she try deeper tones that the magic of her voice appeared.
Emmylou Harris has a very emotional voice. Her "Wrecking Ball" album produced by Danny Lannois is great, and a million miles from her country roots.

^ Peasant!
They are active in traditional/Celtic music. Kate Rusby is a solo act -- lovely, emotive voice, beautiful accent.
Karen Matheson sings for Scottish Celtic act Capercaillie -- great voice, & a stunner too!
Lots of great female vox in that field. I'm at least as big a fan of "trad" as I am of prog (200+ CDs). Woke up to the dulcet strains of fair Kate today -- my wife's a big fan too.

I'd stop the bugger from singing outside your window of a morning, surprised your wife puts up with it!
Maybe you could start a Morris Dancing revival

Maddy Prior sung with Mike Oldfield's band so she could be brought under the category of Prog.

Agnes Buen Garnas (with Jan Garbarek) does a masterful recording with Rosensfole (ECM)
And for the more mature listener:
Annette Peacock, even with a limited vocal range, breathes sex on Bill Bruford's Feels Good To Me, making it my all time favourite jazz rock album. And check out Sidsel Endresen singer with nu.fusionist Bugge Wesseltoft, for Scandanavian vocal sexiness as it is happening right now.
