And some that are prog... ain't there...

Hey my favorite female prog voices.. are the Pink Floydettes....including Clare Tory.. and I guess you know that Toni Tenneille (The Captain & Tenneille) was a Pink Floyd back up singer for awhile.... she evidently didn't learn a lot..

I voted for Chrissie (Magenta) although I think Magdelana Hagberg (Par Lindh Project) should be in the poll .She practically fronts the band now.I also like Sonja Kristina but my favourite is Chrissie.

Heather Findlay and shes not on the list

sensational voice thats sweet and inspirational.

This lady deserves to recognised..shes apart of Mostly Autumn, sang at the Magicians Party with Uriah Heep and she featured on Ayreons new release.

Of the above list, it's almost unfair to compare anyone to Haslam since she not only has one of the most God-given voice gifts in music, but was something of a "trailblazer," and thus some (if not many) of the others owe at least a small debt to her.

I also like Alannah Currie of Babble, whose voice is one of the most mesmerizing in prog.  (Babble's conspicuous absence from this site continues to bother me...)

However, although she might not be prog, the best female voice in "proto-prog" has to be Grace Slick, one of the most expressive, "honest" singers in rock.

Noone in the Poll. I like Astrid van der Veen's voice, from the Ambeon album. Talk about the voice of an angel!

I agree 100%!! The only female singer of the prog scene I know who can be compared to Annie is: MAGGIE REILLEY, from Mike Oldfield.

The poll list should be bigger: I think those women have outstanding voices:

Anita Hergerland (Mike Oldfield)

Kate Bush

Clare Torry (If you want to hear her normal voice, then listen to Don't hold back from Alan Parson' Eve; also Tangerine Dream's Yellowstone Park is a mini Great Gig in the Sky!)

A special mention to :

White Willow singer, Roger Waters' vocalists: Madeleine Bell-Doreen Chanteer-Katie Kissoon, Clodagh Simmons (Mike Oldfield), Presence singer, Bobbie Watson (Comus).

Finally, non prog artist: Emma Shapplin (opera), Mylene Farmer (French pop), Barbara Streisand,  Daze singer (Euro-dance), 4 strings singer (Trance+Euro-dance),

Annie Haslam  had no peers she was the first lady of prog and had a truly god given gift that lifted her away from anyone else. From Prologue and onwards she had a voice that captivated me almost like Jon Anderson.Like Sv and Batts I would herald the voice of Heather Findlay of Mostly Autumn.Go see her live she is a wonderful talent.Away from prog Joni Mitchell had a voice that could mesmerise.Hey Batts welcome to this forum you will enjoy.

Hiroko Nagai of Pageant should DEFINITELY be in the poll. She's who I'd vote for above the other choices...

As I said before, I agree with Clare Tory and also another PF backup singer.. Sam Brown, who is a great jazz artist in her own time.

I also agree with Annie Haslam.  She was an original and she has one of those naturally talented voices (sort of like our Ms. Carey) in that she can sing about 5 octaves... without a strain.

Has anyone heard canadian singer... Mimi (Goese).  I loved her album "Soak"... and it had lots of prog tendancies... She also has a brilliant voice..

Again we agree Richardh, Annie Haslam was always my first choice, but Christina Murphy Booth from Magenta has slowly became my favorite vocalist, she's always precise and the sould of the band.

Also agree about Magdelana Hagberg, she should at least in the poll.

I DIDN'T HEAR ENOUGH FEMALE VOCALISTS TO MAKE A FAIR DECISION, SOME OF YOU ONLY MENTION SOME GIRLS THAT HAD PARTICIPATED WITH PROG GROUPS, BUT NOT AS A PERMANENT BASIS MEMBERS. SONJA KRISITINA (FROM CURVED AIR), IS THE ONLY WOMAN THAT I WOULD CONSIDER AS A GOOD SINGER, BUT SINCE I DIDN'T HEAR SOME OF THE GROUPS (OR NAMES) LISTED ABOVE I CANNOT VOTE WITHOUT GIVING A REASON WHY SHE AND NOT THE REST...

BY THE WAY, I WONDER WHY MARIAH CAREY WAS NOT CONSIDER ON THE LIST, MANY POSTS ON HER DISCUSSION ROOM THAT I GUESS SHE DESERVES A PLACE

You are totally foregetting the late 60s female singer Grace Slick. She sang in Jeffersson Airplane from 1967-1972.The band at their artyest point in their career played some kind of psychedelic proto-artrock...

"Their singer" is actually Sandy Denny, who lead also a short (RIP Sandy) but briliant solo career. Her voice is as beautiful as Maddy Prior's or Annie Haslam's.

I know they are not exactly progressive rock but IMO Medieval Baebes and Miranda Sex Garden (Gothic/Celtic/Folk) have a common denominator, the wonderful voice of Katharine Blake.

Excelent vocalist and closer to prog' than most people believe.

Annie Haslam for me, Maani summed up my reasons nicely.

Sonja Kristina a very close second though, very distinctive and atmospheric.

A couple of non prog ones - Karen Carpenter, now what could she have done with a good prog song? "Goodbye to love" gave some indication, but she had a wonderful voice. She started off singing in a higher key, it was only when it was suggested in the studio that she try deeper tones that the magic of her voice appeared.

Emmylou Harris has a very emotional voice. Her "Wrecking Ball" album produced by Danny Lannois is great, and a million miles from her country roots.

^ Peasant!Wink

They are active in traditional/Celtic music. Kate Rusby is a solo act -- lovely, emotive voice, beautiful accent.

Karen Matheson sings for Scottish Celtic act Capercaillie -- great voice, & a stunner too!Big smile

Lots of great female vox in that field. I'm at least as big a fan of "trad" as I am of prog (200+ CDs). Woke up to the dulcet strains of fair Kate today -- my wife's a big fan too.Clap

On that basis everybody who came in contact with prog is prog - then let's go daft: punk band Stranglers had Fripp, Hammill and Hillage front them once, when Hugh Cornwall was in jail, ergo The Stranglers are Prog and Punk and ????? No I don't think so.

I think you miss my point. Maddy Prior is an out and out Anglo Scot folk singer, primarily. I've seen her several times, and there no obvious prog is in her repertoise. Was Sandy Denny a heavy rock singer because she sang on a Led Zep album - no she was an Anglo Scott folk singer too.

Check Stranglers & friend's Live album for contributions from Fripp, Hillage and Hammill, do punk numbers (it is a most enjoyable album in part, because of the mixture of musical styles). Most certainly I wouldn't accuse Fripp and Hillage of being punk - Hammill has had his moments though, perhaps explaining Johnny Rotten's liking for Van Der Graaf Generator.

I think it is odd to place a musician under the heading of 'Prog', because they guested or sessioned on a prog album or two, while the majority of thier fans know he/she for a specific type of music. Keith Tippett is one of Britain's most important free jazz musicians, but played with Krimson. John Surman, arguably the greatest jazz saxophonist to come out of the UK in 30 years, has been heard as a session player for Nice's recordings. And so.

Maddy Prior actually toured with Mike Oldfield.Maybe she is folk primarily but she did more than just make a session appearance on an Oldfield album. I never realised my innocent comment would cause such a problem.

Dare I say that Toyah Wilcox should also be included as she is married to a prog rocker!

No problem rather a plead not to get carried away including people who are better known for another musical genre. Strangely enough (no I lie, differently not in this case) Toyah is also on that Stranglers & Friends album - but thank goodness not singing with her hubby (and I use the word 'singing' loosely hereConfused).

Sonia Kristina. Not so underrated anymore? Very happy to see a poll she where she's on top (Thanks to my vote). Annie Haslam's perfect voice sometimes gets on my nerves, and Curved Air's music is much more fun.

Sonia might have gotten harder competition if the female vocalists in Pentangle, Spirogyra and Amon Düül II were in the poll.

Okay, female singers. Here we go:

Anathema's Lee Douglas, Portishead's Beth Gibbons, Paatos' Petronella, White Willow's Trude Eidtang, Ambeon's Astrid van der Veen, Leaves' Eyes' Liv Christine, and, not to be forgotten, all those wonderful lady singers that hang around in the quite prog-related gothic rock (the Jansen sisters, Simone Simons, as well as the singers of Elis, Edenbridge, Nemesea, Sengir, Xandria etc.).

Oh, and I'm probably the only one around here that cannot stand those PF-backing vocalists. They sound like screaming pigs to me ... same with those, ehm, screetching 'creatures' that appear on Spock's Beard's The Light.

I would vote for Kate Bush. From your list I'd choose Sonja Kristina -- I really love her raw and powerful performance on Curved Air Live (1975). It's a great album -- really puts that extra raw, live punch into their material much like Genesis Live and Rush's All the World's a Stage.

Couldn't agree more. She certainly should get the credit she deserves. Amazing voice!!!!

Right on! Mostly Autumn are awesome and Heather has taken Annie Haslam's crown as best female singer (just).

Karen Matheson (Capercaillie) is also magnificent, as is Maggie Reilly.

From this poll, Annie Haslam - her voice sends pleasurable shivers down my spine. Missing from the poll is Kate Bush - who would definitely get my vote. Heather Findlay is up there as well as Marcelo Bovio and Tarja Turinen (ex Nightwish). Non Prog voices that are top with me include, Grace Slick (Jefferson Airplane/Starship); Annie Lennox; Sharon den Ardel (Within Temptation and has featured on Ayreon projects) and Pamela Moore (Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime I & II).

There are many more female voices that are worthy of inclusion - too many to list...

Dagmar Krause. Experimental and strong vocals that goes way beyond the usual meaning of sing. Most of the list are just good singers, while she is an explorer of vocal techniques. I can't say this about Karnataka, October Project and Quidam's vocalists, since I haven't heard anything from those bands. But it is pretty obvious were to find the difference for the rest of them. Off course, strength is not a quality that most people appreciate in a woman, given the usual ideas about how they have to be sweet and kind and sound like a flute or a swan, not as a monster. Dagmar Krause people; a true artist floating almost alone in a much to conventional line of work. And world.

Marcela Bovio... cliché, I've heard thousands of them...

Off the list it would have to be Dagmar KRAUSE

But I would have to agree with Chamberry, Partonella Nettermalm from Paatos does have the most beautiful voice.

It isn't. On the other hand someone has to tell these poor devils they'll never make it.
Better it's Jerney at least she know's her bussiness.

Well said.
Jerney's voice in E&F was sensational.Being offered  a jury job on ther 'Idols' shows does not make you a sh*t singer.

from the list Sonja Kristina or Dagmar Krause; Sonja for emotion, Dagmar for sophistication (she sings the most complicated melodic lines in prog). but the real winner is Anna Meek of Catapilla.
not quite prog, though prog-related at least: Inga Rumpf of Frumpy and Atlantis. no-one has a roar like her (except for Anna Meek)

Now I don't remember whether I voted or not, but I'd go for Kate too - as well as Jacqui McShee from Pentangle, whom someone else mentioned in an earlier post. Annie Haslam has a great voice, but a slight cheese factor somewhat puts me off.

Annie and Jane are outstanding.

I don't know exactly why, but I prefer Jane to Annie. So my vote is for Jane Relf

In truth I have never heard the first album with Jane. I was debating getting it. I love the other version of Renaissance and I am curious about the former version. I absolutly adore Annie's voice.

Not on the list, but I adore Jane Duboc's voice (from Bacamarte).  My wife called it whiny.

My favourite voice in Prog at this time is Carolina Prieto from Kotebel.  I also like the use of voices in Karda Estra.

Dagmar Krause certainly gets points for distinctiveness.  Rather unusual.  Almost too distinct at this time for me; I'd have to listen more.

Kate Bush is a long-time favourite artist with a distinct voice... Could vote for her.

Annie Haslam... Well, her voice is strong and very pretty, but I don't find it that extraordinary.  Still, I really like her voice.

Joanne Hogg's voice is pleasant, but I'm a little New Aged out.

Sonja Cristina's voice is very nice indeed.

Christina Booth -- I don't care for the music or her style.

As for the others (showing my newbieness), I don't know them.

A very strong list!  I particularly want to find well-trained operatic female voices, however, in Prog.

Oh, one singer that would fit well into your list, I think, but didn't make your list, is Jerney Kaagman of Earth and Fire.

congratulations to notice that overlooked name (and also for keeping me from the pains of spelling itTongue)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ClapClapClapClapClapClapClap

I also checked the previous pages to find other overlooked names, but alas:

- Stella Vander - Magma (though she doesn't sing solo as far as I know)

- Rosi Mueller (of Ash Ra Tempel fame... she's just amazing in the album where herself is "Starring")

- Gille Letman (where she sings along with the former in the Cosmic Jokers albums... I don't discriminate her voice, though)

out of the list, I only recognise Renaissance and Curved Air singers, so I better not vote.

btw, what's the fuss about Kate Bush?!?!? OK, her voice is fine, but as far as I have given my ear, there's nothing so proggy in her solo works. She's under "prog-related" category, anyway... the strongest relation of her to prog is where she backs up Peter Gabriel IMHO...

as for prog-singing, I think Renate would beat 'em all, because as much as Haslam's and Kristina's voices are strong, they sing renaissance style IMHO... Renate's voice is rather "distorted", but most proggy...

Listen to Turkish psych/prog; you won't regret:
Baris Manco,Erkin Koray,Cem Karaca,Mogollar,3 Hürel,Selda,Edip Akbayram,Fikret Kizilok,Ersen (and Dadaslar) (but stick with the '70's, and 'early 80's!)
