Interesting matchup here! One of the most influential 70s progressive rock bands of all time that is still going today against one of the premier progressive metal acts. Both acts have managed to penetrate into the mainstream while still making aesthetically pleasing and progressive music. Which do you prefer and why?
Please: If you are not familiar with one or both of the band's material, I urge that you use the links provided and at least listen to the samples on their respective pages. Rush's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=609 Tool's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1199 As always, discussions are encouraged. Nothing against Tool, but a rather easy choice for me this time.

I must be one of the only members of this site who think Rush is greatly overrated.

Trust me, you aren't. The only classic band with more haters on this site is ELP.

The flipside is however, that Rush might have the most fanboys of all the classic bands as well. Although, I think that Genesis and VDGG would give them a run for their money; not to mention all of the Magma fans that seem to keep coming out of the woodworks. I hesitate to say Genesis has more than Rush just because most of the Genesis fanboys tend to hate Genesis post-Gabriel, whereas most of the Rush fanboys may not love the post-classic album era, there is not as much hate for these albums.

I voted for Rush, although Tool has the advantage in that you can mosh at their live shows.

I'm so proud of you right now (<--tears of joy) As much as I like Tool I don't think Rush has any competition in my books. |

Rush, Rush, Rush....
But in this another case...: Journey Vs Premiata Forneria Maconi please added this option: both! (P.s.: obvious... In the case of this Rush Vs Tool this option is not necessary!)

Both are the kind of important, influential, etc.bands who don't really click on me. I can enjoy them on a certain degree, but we are not that close friends.
Maybe Tool is a bit more intriguing for me. |
