Interesting matchup here! One of the most influential 70s progressive rock bands of all time that is still going today against one of the premier progressive metal acts. Both acts have managed to penetrate into the mainstream while still making aesthetically pleasing and progressive music. Which do you prefer and why?
Please: If you are not familiar with one or both of the band's material, I urge that you use the links provided and at least listen to the samples on their respective pages.
Rush's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=609 - http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=609 Tool's PA page: http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1199 - http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1199 ../artist.asp?id=1492 - As always, discussions are encouraged.

I must be one of the only members of this site who think Rush is greatly overrated.

The flipside is however, that Rush might have the most fanboys of all the classic bands as well. Although, I think that Genesis and VDGG would give them a run for their money; not to mention all of the Magma fans that seem to keep coming out of the woodworks. I hesitate to say Genesis has more than Rush just because most of the Genesis fanboys tend to hate Genesis post-Gabriel, whereas most of the Rush fanboys may not love the post-classic album era, there is not as much hate for these albums.

I voted for Rush, although Tool has the advantage in that you can mosh at their live shows.

As much as I like Tool I don't think Rush has any competition in my books.

Rush, Rush, Rush....
But in this another case...: Journey Vs Premiata Forneria Maconi please added this option: both! (P.s.: obvious... In the case of this Rush Vs Tool this option is not necessary!)

Both are the kind of important, influential, etc.bands who don't really click on me. I can enjoy them on a certain degree, but we are not that close friends. Maybe Tool is a bit more intriguing for me.

Rush has never really clicked with me, but Tool is one of my favourite modern bands, so Tool for me.

Dang. I can't beleive that Rush is so far ahead. I can understand them winning, but by such a large margin?
I'd pick Tool by miles. I find their music more complex, creative, emotional, and overall far more superior. I can't hate on Rush though.

Ah, finally some people who share my opinion!
I think we're going to have to separate the 70s-80s bands and the 90s-00s bands to give any modern bands a fair shot.

Just about everything Tool is annoys me. MJK, blech. The mechanicalness, and just about everything about their music... *heaves*

I getcha man.
For me, Tool was a far more deep and emotional experience. I listen to Rush and think "pretty good"
I hear Lateralus or 10 000 Days from beginning to end, it's just a mind blowing journey that leaves this feeling with me even after the record is over. Rush just never did that for me.
