 Topic: Christian Lyrics vs Death Metal Growls

The thought just popped into my head about doing this poll , maybe God put it there or the Neal Morse CD I just finished playing may have helped ... now for some Opeth

oh come on, this is a choice between something artistic -- something that probes into one's very humanity -- and something cheap and silly -- something that, moreover, grates on the ears -- you can only choose Death Metal Growls.

I've always found Christian bands very boring, despite the fact that I'm a Christian. And I really like Death Metal Growls, they're always good for giving the song a new brutality if done right. I suppose both can be fantastic if used correctly. But I don't think Christian lyrics are a bad thing, it's just that they appear more often in bad music.
Maybe I should get some of that Neal Morse stuff.

depends, i like death growls but sometimes i like christian lyrics, depends the mood. More often i like death , but for example i kinda like Stryper from time to time, i think the best christian band ever.

Christian lyrics, but only if they're sincerely Christian. Most modern "religious" music that I've heard seems to have very little substance.

A combination of the two. Death growled christian lyrics  oh sh*t me saying that has probably led to Neal Morse reading this, having a brainwave and ringing Mikael Akefeldt to come and feature on his 2009 album. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... Wait That would be awesome

oh, you've found two of my pet hates here...if you'd included overused double-bass drumming, you'd have has them all... 
I'm afraid I can't listen to Opeth because of the christian lyrics, and I can't cope with neal Morse's death metal growls, in equal measure...  |

I prefer decent singing over death metal any day, really.
But I would like to make this comment about Christian lyricists (myself being among them)-
Guys like Kerry Livgren and Neal Morse, both of whom I have a great deal of respect for, got, well, sloppy after they became Christians. Livgren's lyrics got sloppy because of bad rhymes and some strange need to remain "mystical." Morse got sloppy because he wrote lyrics that sometimes didn't seem to fit the meter of the song. This isn't a blanket criticism of either of them (some of my favorite lyrics in all of progressive rock music came from Livgren's pen), but they do tend to be hit or miss.

There isn't an option for shoving a pencil into my eye. 
I can't stand death metal vocals at all, while I find some of the less preachy, more spiritual, Christian lyrics (e.g. Iona, TFK, etc.) not only tolerable, but enjoyable. The heavy preaching of Morse I could do without though.

With a very few exceptions, imho, Christian lyrics tend to be very cheesy, and sappy for the most part. The Jesus is our boyfriend or locker room buddy mentality really grates on my nerves. Death metal growls and lyrics cause on to examine the soul. We will all have our day with the grim reaper. Groooooowl!

The only christian band I can stomach is Kansas, their album from 2001 is great, and their albums from the early 80s aren't terrible either. And Proto-Kaw as well, Kerry Livgren really is the best christian musician out there.

I think there's varying degrees of both, and the stereotypes come from both being done rather poorly I find most Christian music (ESPECIALLY the soft rock/alternative stuff that my church sang) to be terribly uninspired....I think anytime you have a singular topic for all of your lyrics it will start to wear itself thin rather quickly

That's exactly what's the problem with many Christian bands. The lyrics
would be better and more convincing if Christianity was not the topic
of the song, but something that shows through in how the topic is presented. (The good thing about death metal growls is that it doesn't matter what the topic is because it's impossible for anyone to decipher the lyrics.)

Both are extremely hard to do well. The two of those elements done badly have turned me away from otherwise good music. And both metal and Christianity are home base for me, though I've expanded my scope in both music and religion.
I think both force a narrowing that is difficult to overcome.
The closest thing to death vocals that I feel is completely successful musically is Devin Townsend's rapid-fire triplet screams in "Earth Day." And that's not really death voice.

I have nothing agains any of these... I have more issues with some primitive and blatant Church bashing.
Saviour Machine and Callisto are two excellent prog metal bands, who have a Christian lyrical background, and they don't "preach."
