I have claimed in quite a few posts on this thread that I don't think in any way,shape or form that Maiden is prog.They are just a metal band,they have a proggy moment or two.I really liked them growing up,Clive Burr and Nicko McBrain I cite as drum influences.Still like them,as a matter of fact.

If Iron Maiden is more than just a metal band for repressed white boys to rock to to let out frustration (and there's nothing wrong with that, but it's not prog), then, I don't know, they have an image problem.
They're not even good fantasy/sword and sorcery pics; but the kind of stuff I would see in bad comic books. Defend the band if you can, but part of what makes up a band is the persona they choose to project. They could be playing "South Side of the Sky" but if this is their image, I don't know, I'd I have a hard time getting past it.

Haven't you ever heard the saying "never judge a book by it's cover"?Jeez.And all thier covers are painted by Derek Riggs,and excellent artist.
|
Yeah, of course I've heard that. But I think their covers are approved by the band, so it is a reflection of how they see their music. So to me, they see they're music as the equivalent of B-grade horror movies, which again is fine, but it's doesn't exaclty fit the prog genre.

"Alexander The Great" from the Somwhere In Time album is also progressive, and it features a cool 7/4 (or 7/8?) time signature.
But im not sure if i would call them prog!?

Maiden don't write I'm-gonna-kill-everyone-lyrics,so don't lump them in with those kinds of bands.Murders in the Rue Morgue(Edgar Allen Poe),Ryme of the Ancient Mariner(Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem),The Trooper(Napoleanic Wars),Powerslave(ancient Egypt),Aces High(The British RAF and the Battle of Britain),Alexander The Great(figure that one out),Phantom of the Opera(again,figure that one out),Run to the Hills(The exploitation of the American Indians),Flight of Icarus(Greek mythology),To Tame a Land(Dune).
I don't consider Maiden prog,or even prog metal.They are a metal band with some proggy moments.But I grew up with them,was listening to their first album in 1980 when no one knew who the hell they were and they are a huge musical influence for me.You obviously don't like metal and are very biased in your opinion.Just by the statement of yours that I quoted above,you don't really know what you are talking about.The members of Maiden(especially Steve Harris)are highly intelligent,and probably more well read than you are.

I believe they write some really cheesy lyrics. But, that is not the point. Iron Maiden is not prog.

In what ways does Iron Maiden differ from Motely Crue, because I don't know a thing about either of them and always get them mixed up. Which one is better? Is Queensryche better than both of them? Which one does "She's Got the Looks That Kill"? Are they all considered "Hair Bands"? Please enlighten me.

IM is probably THE heavy metal (not hair metal) band. They're a lot heavier, faster and more sophisticated than Motley Crue, although take that last comment with a pich of salt. They often start their songs slowly and go ballistic in the instrumental sections, although this is obviously not always the case. They don't really change much from album to album, although they can surprise with lyrical acoustic passages. And if you take them too seriously you will never enjoy them - their lyrics are extremely cheesy, but at the same time disarming. AND Bruce Dickinson has a fantastic voice!
My recommendations: "Seventh Son of the Seventh Son", "Fear of the Dark", "Brave New World".

Well i wouldn’t define Iron Maiden as a prog band, althought their importance to the prog metal movement is huge if one considers some basic aspects of their discography:
- Length and construction of Songs: Most Maiden songs are quite big. The construction of themes goes from quiet and basic shapes to hard rocking stuff.
You can find good examples in “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” and “Sign of the Cross”;
- Concepts: Most Maiden albums seem to follow some kind of concept. In “Seventh Son of a Seventh Son” that take it farther, exploring a real solid concept;
- Artwork: Once you forget Eddy, you’ll find real good artwork in most albums.

It's not because you're doing 'epic' tracks you are prog...

Ah the number of time I herd 'if you consider X to be prog, then why not Y?'. They might have inspired some prog metal (the reason why the word metal) but those bands also took inspiration in prog bands (the reason why thw word metal). But maiden NEVER took inspiration on a prog band...

Everybody is going to disagree indeed. And that is quiet weird comming from a guy with a Dream Theater avatar. DT is progmetal. Iron maiden is metal. That's all.
It's not because you like a band that it's obviously a prog band...

Yeah At last someone that thinks the as me as I do... Maiden is very progressive in some ways... Find me a NWOBHM band that has concept albums, epic, over 10 mins long tracks and INTELIGENT lyrics.. Also the Band was inspierd and isnpired many prog bands... They cant be locked up in one genre, becouse they use ideas from many other then hard'n'heavy... Oh, and btw, someone heard A TYRANNY OF SOULS? Igot it 4 days ago and its great (Although "DEvil on a Hog is a boring). What do ya thinck of it? Is it in some way Progressive?
