Please see my other poll, too (best prog metal band except DT, MANY options): http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8144&a mp;PN=1
I saw the other prog metal poll and it's limited (no Pain Of Salvation) and questionable (MalmstEIn) choices and decided to start a new poll about it. The poll is not meant to offer all Progressive Metal bands to vote for (there are more than 25, I'm sure). If you feel that your favorite band is so different from the listed alternatives, please post a message, I'm always willing to expand my horizon.

JUp, DT all the way.... ow, and i think SYL is a melodic death metal bad.... AND YOU FORGOT ABOUT SUCH BANDS LIKE FATES WARNING AND QUEENSRYCHE!!!! These to are the oldest progmetal band around, they defined the sound, wich DT so grandly expanded.

Psychotic Waltz or Fates Warning, neither are that close to being my favourite but they're both historically important.

Thanks for your replies and votes so far! Yes, I forgot some bands. I wanted to keep this poll simple. I forgot Shadow Gallery, Vanden Plas, Threshold, Fates Warning, Tool, Ayreon and Heaven's Cry (and some others I cannot put my finger on now). Queensryche: I wouldn't call them Progressive Metal. Operation: Mindcrime is IMO a masterpiece METAL album. I'll add another poll soon with a slightly different concept and twice as many bands. Feel free to post any other bands that you think are essential Progressive Metal bands. By essential I mean that their influence on, or output of Progressive Metal is essential for the genre. |

You're right about SYL, except for their latest record, which nicely blends the progressive elements of the Devin Townsend solo records into the SYL mayhem |

I don't think that the others are just metal. And as far as Opeth is concerned, I'm sure that their "Progressiveness" is not limited to the acoustic parts. But one could say that their agressive sections are Progressive Metal, and the acoustic ones are Progressive Rock. But this increasingly hypothetical person would surely not be me |

Regardless of whether people like them or not, Dream Theater are the
band that popularised the genre and, as a result can be considered the
most impotant.

Well, so We've came to the conclusion that SYL is a progressive melodic death metal band.... at least "Alien" is... But this album is a bit to much for me... Becouse i don't feel the melodic parts of it... so its prog death? To BIG of a hardcore to me. But "Love?" is still a great song... Absolutley love? it. But "Alien" still has nice moments... |

I think that SYL: Alien is Epic Progressive Hardcore. It's not really Death Metal, because Devin rather screams than growls, and the lyrics are far from the typical Death Metal stuff.

The Gathering ... I hadn't noticed that they're seen as a progressive metal band. Actually, I think they are quite progressive, and if you look at all their albums, on "average" it's progressive metal. I'll post another poll shortly, with many more options and WITHOUT Dream Theater. |

We know that any prog metal poll will be dominated by Dream Theater. But there are other Prog Metal bands, too, so it will be interesting to see which band is the second best. |
