 Topic: 80's Tull

I was watching the Jack in the Green DVD, and I liked a lot of the Broadsword stuff and the song Black Sunday from A, so are those two albums worth buying? I currently don't have any 80's music, cos I'm usually close minded when it comes to 80's music, mainly cos of synthesizers, but I think I could get over it if the music is as good as those songs from the DVD.

I would definitely recommend Broadsword, I think it's a very strong
album - even if it's more rock than prog. A is quite good as well, but
not as even. It has a few good songs like Black Sunday but it's not as
good as Broadsword IMO. Go for Broadsword, for sure! Feel A out a bit
more.

Broadsword is epic! Then there are a series of weaker albums that may turn you off. Roots to Branches and Dot.com in the 90's are a triumphant return to their more proggish form.

As i have mentioned many times, BROADSWORD  is my favorite JTULL album....and ''A'' is not far behind!!
......and i do own every recording from them , including the supposed big ones!

"A" is definitly UNIQUE! Not a masterpiece, but UNIQUE. It has Eddie Jobson, the king of the Modern Keys. If you want something NEW from the band check this, not superb, but it has material never done before or after by them.
Broadsword meh.
You can also the HIGHLY PRAISED Crest of a Knave, it's their most convincing Tull from the 80's though having a Dire Straits feel. I think you should buy this first.
AVOID Under Wraps. It's disastrous.
As you said you haven't checked 80's prog, I recomend Drama by Yes and Duke by Genesis. And if you haven't, check Neo-Prog.
Good Luck with your purchases! Don't fear the 80's!

AGREE! It's somewhat like Keystudio by Yes or better said, Rajaz by Camel. Having the Prog feel of the 70's but with a another influence, no Celtic or British Folk but Eastern and Oriental influence. EXCELLENT album.

I haven't heard Under Wraps for 20 years, but I remember actually liking some of the songs (ducking....) And the concert was a blast, I was with a group of about 15 mostly-stoners and poor album or not, we had a REAL good time.

If you have to duck, let me join you. This album has been a whipping boy for the purists but I liked it then and I like it now.  I also enjoyed the spooky Cold war theme as well, Very similar to Walking in Light which I also get a kick out of. If Under Wraps would have been an Ian Anderson solo album, it would have received way less flak. BAMM! What was that? another rotten EGG or was that a Tormato?  Hey, I Liked Thomas Dolby's Golden Age of Wireless , so why blame me?

yeah, I like what I've heard from Drama, but nothing after that until maybe Keystudio (I've only heard very little from these).

I agree about Broadsword and the Beast being Jethro Tull's best eighties album.

Under Wraps was the first Tull album I bought. Broadsword and A are much better.

nah, Under wraps is a good album as it is, but still probably second to last on my J-Tull list nevertheless.
About "A". One should probably approach this with the precaution, that the album was originally made by Ian Anderson to be recorded as his first solo album but due to certain circumstances, well, it was after all published as the Jethro Tull album. It's basically got more of those 80s drums and synths that we all know so well, than any other JT album. Basically the new members replaced the old ones who were about to leave anyway, the publishers wanted it to be JT... Broadsword and the Beast is one of my all time favourites. I'm already contemplating on getting my 3rd copy of it after a vinyl and the original cd

'Tis good, don't worry about that, it's JT, it's good. No really, I was watching the Slipstream DVD which comes with the A cd, inspired by this thread, and yes, it's a great album in my opinion.

In a vibrant tribute to our respected TZIRSMAY  , i will give now a spin and a new chance to UNDERS WRAP. I bought it back last year to complete my JTULL collection, but the love affair between me and this CD stopped there .......let see what happens now!!!
