Topic: Rush fans very own Subdivisions Posted: June 21 2008 at 23:05 |
I'm a divided man when it comes to my feelings these days about one of my most loved bands ever Rush. I could use your help to help me put things in perspective as I`m not sure if its myself expecting too much or I`m just getting so uncool that I can't relate to them like I could, or if Rush are aiming at a new audience these days and what I fell in love with in the first place with Rush (musicality, philosophical lyrics Peart playing all sorts of rare exotic percussion so on) is gone .. just like a great romance that has reached its expiration point .. is it time to say goodbye ... I'm not sure anymore where in my heart I place modern Rush .. I think I keep them there for good old day memories and sentiment now. How about you how do you really feel about Rush these days ?

They are putting out terrific, non-prog music. Don't let the past hold you back. Of course, if you have legitimately not liked their output for many years, it would not be bizarre to just give up. I know people here who gave up 25 years ago.

they are still going strong. Snakes and Arrows was one of the best prog albums last year.

Being someone who really related to the lyrics and LOVED the direction
of the music (and am a fanboy) I can say that I really highly enjoy the
direction that Rush is going.

Snakes & Arrows is definitely in the bottom 3 Rush albums for me. All it sounded like me was a bunch of older guys trying to be hip and modern, failing to realize that the modern rock scene is stagnant and uninteresting (and they did nothing to change it). Far Cry, maybe the most likable song, goes on for way too long (like most of the album's tracks), repeating the chorus countless times (which King Crimson amusingly blasted in "Happy With What You Have To Be Happy With"). The guitars just sound distorted and muddy and lack variety. The songs sound the same. "The Main Monkey Business" goes absolutely nowhere. The drumming has become uninspiring. "Malignant Narcissism" may have been decent if it weren't for the generic drum patterns. While I appreciate and agree with Peart's lyrics, I feel they were clumsily and bluntly written. It was really a let down to have to sit through 9 S&A songs at the concert and it looked like the rest of the crowd did too. Even in Vapor Trails songs the crowd was excited, but once an S&A song began, the crowd was virtually silent. It's just boring music.

S&A was their best in years, maybe since Power Windows

Rush is still very relevant in the modern day music scene, in my opinion. I will be the first to admit that I am a Rushaholic and will always be. Snakes ans Arrows is their best effort since RTB and even better when played in a live setting. After 34 years there isn't many more innovative drum fills, guitar solos, bass runs, etc. that a band can come up with. With that being said, it's about the songs, and their feeling evoked from the listener. For all the Rush haters. you need to move on, this isn't the same Rush from 25 years ago. Just in life, I hope I am not the same person I was 25 years ago, and this is the same with the boys. And finally if you still don't appreciate the Rush, all it takes is one live show...enough said. They are still, the best live band going, and remember they are all in their mid-fifties.

Is it possible the same could have been said for every tour they did? I mean, on the Vapor Trails Tour, haven't the Vapor Trails songs received the same kind of welcoming? And for the T4E tour? And the Counterpart one?
Just asking to the older fans here: how about the Signals tour? And PowerWindows tour? I wasn't there, so I can't tell.
But I felt hearing the new songs live mad me like them much more, like I've grown accustomized to them. So I voted yes, I like their new direction, but in a very different way than their older ones.

The crowd loved the new stuff at both shows I attended (one on each leg). I really like Rush's current music, and I am glad that Rasculinecz pushed them on S&A. Here's hoping he keeps it up on the next album.

I'm going to sit on the fence for this one.

The direction is great i think, i just seen them in Kansas City about three weeks ago and the new material material from S&A is great. I think some of their new stuff is their most beautiful work yet.

I haven't heard Snakes and Arrows, but I gotta say Vapor Trails was disappointing to me. I still enjoy it when I listen to it, but the songs don't seem as well crafted as before and I really dislike the newer digital grunge guitar sound and lack of keyboards. Lifeson used to have a very unique guitar sound that went "pingy pingy ping," but now it just sludges its way through muddy distortion like a typical grunge band. I thought Geddy Lee put out a better "Rush" album.
I don't think it's always a good idea to keep up with the times.

I like it a lot. I'm going to see them in a little over 3 weeks, hoping that they don't play too much from S&A although I do like it, but I don't want any spoilers.

I don't like the direction they're going in, but I do appreciate that they have some direction instead of becoming caricatures of themselves. That said I really do enjoy the music they are creating despite disliking the direction.
I didn't like the musical roads they went down with Signals, but that path resulted in some of my favorite albums of all time.

I'm one of those who think that Rush hasn't put out a really great album since Moving Pictures. Don't get me wrong, the newer ones are ok, just not my cup of tea. Have to go with option #2.

Nowadays, it is possible for Opeth fans to enjoy Rush... bad thing.
