While I don't claim to be an expert in this topic by any means and while I am shockingly lacking in knowledge about many of the bands mentioned here, I can't help but mention that Amagrama's first album is a worthy addition to any prog collection, no matter what geographical area in which you live.

Amagrama was one of the albums I brought from Argentina in my travel last january, and it's the only one I haven't heard yet. Why? I take my time, and by now I'm enjoying William Gray with Living Fossils.

While Argentina and Chile have been busy (Why no Sergio Alvarez yet on PA?) , the Brazilian symph sector has been quiet , still waiting for that darn Tempus Fugit album, as well as a new Aether, Quaterna Requiem, Eclipse, Index etc... Frankly I think Holland has been very busy with a slew of great bands and releases (Trion, Odyssice, Flamborough Head, Knight Area, Mangrove, Triangle, Novox, Lady Lake, Like Wendy, Ice & Nice Beaver). France has also been doing well with Taal, Nemo, Xang, Maldoror, Seven Reizh, Aside Beside, Silver Lining and Skeem. The Vikings are still quite active including Norway with the splendid Kvazar and Gazpacho. Poland with Riverside, Satellite and Believe are smoking. Hey , there is no more monopoly, "the world is my oyster " (B.Ferry)

Quite a few of my favourites are from South America. I've particularly found Argentina to be very strong. Bubu's Anabelas is one of my favourite classic prog albums.
I thinking this deserves another mention here. Ivan suggested this band Factor Burzaco - Avant and it's in the archives under RiO/ Avant Prog: FACTOR BURZACO I've only heard the myspace tracks: factor burzaco but they just under my skin in a way that rarely happens -- pure love at first listen. Just to copy some of my early impressions from his suggestions thread: t is a very good RIO inspired band. It's rather like Thinking Plague, only I like this more. It's really terrific music for my tastes. And complex in that it sounds at times like two sets of music are playing at the same time, but it works without becoming a mess. Aside from a Henry Cow and ilk influence, as well as similarities to bands such as as U Totem, Volapuk, 5UU's and Thinking Plague, and the singer reminds be a bit of Bjork too, there's some very BUBUish music there (particularly noticable in "Mesianic"). |

Yeah, that's a good Akineton Retard vid -- good band. Coincidentally, I had just prepared a full poll before seeing this that mentioned their live album (but lost it due to an error, and now due to my error, even lost a lengthy post to go with it).

I wouldn't even have thought of this topic until I saw it in a thread. Traditionally all my music comes from the U.K., and I notice more and more of my music is actually coming from Latin-America... however, it just doesn't have the same connection with me as some of my favorite Euro stuff.

In the previous pages we can see some reference to the Brazilian band
Mutantes, but it is less than what they deserve... One of the their most remarkable albums is Tecnicolor (yes, it is spelled without the "h"). You can find more details about the story behind its release (30 years after recorded) in the Tecnicolor reviews. The (long) text is based on the Tecnicolor review in Portuguese, where you can at lest see some pictures...

Well, it seems there's no answer for MUTANTES, but I'll take them into account when I get into Brazilian prog...
And what about MAR DE ROBLES? Currently I'm listening their debut "MdR" and it's f... great!! "Indígena" is better rated, but I'm enjoying more the previous "MdR".
Along with Octopus, it's the best I've found in this country in this decade.

I could see MdR in concert last year here in Mexico City and it was love at first sight, awesome music, both albums are worth listening, but if i had to pick my favourite, i would choose "Indigena"
Octopus is a good band, i saw them at the BajaProg, but maybe its not the kind of prog i enjoy the most.
Yesterday i bought an album by an Argentinian band called "Las Orejas Y La Lengua" i know some of our collabs like their music, now i understand why |
