Hello fellow progheads.
If I look at the new progrock releases in the recent years I notice that South-America has become a very prolific continent delivering exciting new prog from
- Nexus
- Amagrama
- Jaime Rosas
- Angulart
- Tarkus
- William Gray
- Bauer
- GALF
- Spin
- Astralis
- Diapasao
- Supay
- Quaterna Requiem (DVD)
.......... to name some of my favorites !
Can we take the conclusion that South-America is becoming the new progrock continent instead of Europe or the USA? I am very curious to your opinions

Well, Gentle Giant, you mentioned Flot De Loto, Toccata, Parthenon and Mar De Robles, all good and promising bands (although Parthenon is a kind of re-union band) that are no on my list
I agree, Skandinavia, mainly Sweden remains an amazing source of prog, often loaded with Mellotron
By the way, not many South-American bands are using a Mellotron/Mellotron samples, remarkable!

I dont actualy own anything from South-American bands but I have noticed that there does seem to be an large increase in the number of bands producing prog in that area of the world this decade (orat least noticable to the rest of the world anyway). I dont think its going to suppercede America and Europe as the maine continents for producing prog but it could very well join them at this rate.

Prog-rock in South America was always a bit underground, even more than punk-rock, but I'm seeing something is changing. Not only new bands (as listed by Erik) but also the reunion of "senior" prog actors have been hailed by the fans and suprisingly by the press, like O Terço, in 2005, and Mutantes, in 2006. I think that some movement is happening in Argentina and Chile too.
Here an YouTube clip of Mutantes playing for more than 50,000 people last Jan, 25 (yes, 2007) in São Paulo.

Thanks for your posts
For me Argentine band Nexus has released the best 2006 album (entitled Perpetuum Karma), other Argentine band William Gray is the most promising new prog band and I am delighted about new prog bands Tarkus and Diapasao (both from Brazil) and Astralis from Chili (best new neo-prog I have heard in years) and one of the best DVD releases is the eponymous by Quaterna Requiem from Brazil.
If I compare the recent floods of quality releases with Italy, UK and Sweden from Europe, Japan from Asia and the USA, I have the idea that South America is the new Progheaven, what an incredible high level and how prolific

Actually i have been listening to South America`s music deeper than a few years ago, i have discovered great old bands, but that`s because i`ve noticed several "new" bands trying to be heard around the world, and believe me that they have to because of their huge musical quality.
I like so many bands previously listed, Diapasao is the last Brazilian gem i found a real promising band.

I must agree with Erik, although I dont know if I would call the prog here as the leading in the world by any means, it is promising and mostly original. I also agree with Erik on Nexus, although I have yet to hear Perpetual karma, I heard some songs when I saw them live last year, they are THE argentinian band right now, for anyone who wants to chek out south american prog, I recommend Nexus

In my eyes the new leader of prog is Scandinavia. Prog-metal giants like Opeth, PoS, Meshuggah, and Green Carnation. Not to mention Angalard, The Flower Kings, Anekdoten, and Sigur Ros (I'm including Iceland as part of Scandinavia).
South America is becoming more and more active, but Scandinavia is leading the charge IMO. Whatever happened to the good ol' US?

As far as Prog metal goes, Mindflow seem to be the next big Prog Metal band to come out of South America.
Their album from 2006 is the second highest PM album on the ProgArchives list for 2006, just behind Dream Theater´s "Score"

Avant Prog: AKINETÓN RETARD, YONHOSAGO, EXSIMIO, CABEZAS DE CERA, JOSÉ LUIS FERNÁNDEZ LEDESMA, LASOREJAS Y LA LENGUA.
Prog metal: AUTÓMATA, OCTOPUS.
By the way, the Spanish bands AMAROK & OMPHALOS do not only comprise Sout American musicians. It is them who lead the band as main writers and performers. For both bands, the leading writer is a Venezuelan guy. Go figure!!

Her comes another excellent instrumental prog band from Argentina: ZONDA PROJECKT. Main influences are as diverse as: 80s, King Crimson, classic Camel, Mike Oldfield and the Projekcts, with added textures of Argentinean folk in some moments. It seems that their second album will bear a higher degree of jazzy elements while retaining their usual influences.
Kind regards.

Hello Cesar, I have found this concerning the name of a Venezuolan musician who played in Spanish band Amarok :
Erik Neuteboom: Parthenon is a band from Venezuela that was founded in 1979 by the two schoolfriends drummer Juan Carlos Ballesta and keyboard player Robert Santamaría. After some years the keyboardplayer Victor Fiol left the band in order to join known Venezuolan progrock band Tempano and soon Parthenon disbanded. Robert moved to Spain had success with progrock band Amarok. Early the Nineties the two schoolfriends Robert and Juan Carlos re-founded Parthenon. Along with a female singer, a bass player and guest musicians they made new versions of the early songs and re-recorded it as this new CD, added with two sessions songs from 1980-1981 and a live track from 1981.
The eight compositions sound impressive as the band does, especially the keyboard work is excellent evoking the great Hammond and Moog days of Keith Emerson (and at some moments UK) in the early Seventies along swinging piano and some majestic violin-Mellotron. We also can enjoy flowing and sensitive work on the electric guitar, often in great interplay with the keyboards. The music has obvious hints from ELP but the female Spanish vocals and parts with the Theremin (outstanding duel with synthesizers in Conversaciones) and hobo give Parthenon their progrock an extra dimension and special flavor. And the compositions deliver captivating musical breaks and musicial surprises. The two studio songs from 1980-1981 sound a bit dated and the live track is on the level of a bootleg but contains pleasant psychedelic inspired music (including a compelling organ solo).
To me this CD sounds as a great progrock album from the often overlooked Latin-American progrock scene!
Thanks for your posts and recommendations, fellow progheads, I am glad that so many share my enthousiasm about the new South-American prog!
My latest South-American recommendation: Chilean band Seti with their album Life Signs (2005), wonderful symphonic prog with moving electric guitar and beuatiful keyboard work

Actually, the guys of Matraz play an ineventive mixture of prog metal, vintage symphonic prog and prog fusion. Entarnce, also from Chile, play a very powerful prog metal-meets-symph prog, with a slightly higher dose of prog metal. In comparison, Matraz are more eclectic, so if they had been labelled as merely symphonic prog, that would have been an incompllete label, as well.
Kind regards.

I was also pleasantly surprised by Matraz, I am not really into prog metal but Matraz succeeded to keep my attention because of their eclectic approach, as Cesar emphasized.
Here is my review from their debut CD:
MATRAZ — Tiempo
(Review by Erik Neuteboom)
This is the debut CD from the Chilean five piece band Matraz, released in 2001. The title and cover picture refers to the four tracks that represent parts of the day between night and day.
1. Amanecer (10:41) : After a spacey keyboard-intro, the music continues with beautiful, often sparkling piano play and strong Spanish vocals. Then a slow rhythm and howling guitar developes into a bombastic progmetal climate featuring powerful metal- riffs, propulsive drums and blistering electric guitar soli. This progmetal inspired sound is blended with exciting piano and synthesizer runs, very exciting music!
2. Mañana (11:43) : The first part is build upon compelling interplay between marimba and piano, then a mid-tempo, heavy guitar and sparkling piano. The climates alternate from mellow with marimba and Spanish vocals to bombastic delivering exciting spectacular soli on synthesizer and guitar and splendid interplay between classical inspired piano and propulsive metal- riffs, GREAT!
3. Atardecer (4:33) : This is a dreamy piece with melancholical vocals, guitar and strings, a very pleasant atmosphere to relax after all that bombastic stuff.
4. Noche (13:11) : The final track is very alternating, from spacey with soaring keyboards and mellow with tender piano and acoustic guitar to heavy and bombastic featuring powerful and dynamic drums and again great interplay between guitar and piano.
THIS IS A VERY STRONG AND PROMISING DEBUT CD WITH LOTS OF FINE MUSICAL IDEAS!

Viva!! One more topic about South american prog!!
Ok, I think the "new leader" idea is too pretentious..but south-american
rock is really becoming very significative in prog world.
Or I should say latin-american prog? We can add Cast and other mexican
bands here..
Cast is, maybe, the more significative band from nowadays.
By the way, I'm listening Estructura from Venezuela right now! Very good
album.. is from 1978 however..

Great pleasure for me when I see nice comments about our music (latin music). Yes we have inumerous artist in prog rock vein, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Mexico and many others countries. Some artists in Brazil doesn't have any kind of recognize. Unfortunately the music industry looks for comercial music only and the independent labels have too many difficults to survive. But I hope one day all of us will see rock prog bands from south and latin america play good music here and around the globe. We just need to keep the faith in music. A band from my city (Florianópolis/Brazil): Experimental instrumental:
COLORIR is a two piece from an island in BRAZIL
that likes to express themselves through live music. Through
espontaneous composisions we create our own music and we like to bring
it to alternative spaces such as beaches , parks , mental hospitals and
the strangest of all...night clubs/pubs.
The debut album is
called "Noite Madrugada Infinito" and it was recorded with a 2 inch
analog tape machine. Mixing was done live as well , on the tape's first
audition. Effects were added as we mixed manually. Songs were inspired
by the night and the mistery of the unknown.

During my interviews with Angulart (Chile), Amagrama and Nexus (both Argentine) I was told how difficult it is for progrock bands in South-America to survive because of the huge impact of the commercialism Nonetheless, today I realised that the last months I have only added South-American bands (see my reviews on this site): two weeks ago Diaposao (Brazil) and William Gray (Argentina), last week Astralis and Seti (both Chile) and next week I hope to add Spin from Brazil (Atkingani is helping me to collect information in order to present a decent biography). I have Ars Vita Longa Brevis from Haddad, but I don't think this album amazing. Maybe a 3 stars album. I didn't like the lyrics too much. The instrumental songs are very good. I don't know if there is something wrong with me.. I just prefer other bands. Or I have to listen more Haddad albums. The genre? Maybe Art Rock, because they play various styles.

Well, I just happened to be listening to the sample tracks of a couple bands from Chile on the front page, Exsimio and Octopus, and both were very very good. Man, Exsimio's drummer in a monster!

Love Exsimio. I have their Carbono 14 and will get their s/t soon as well.
Lately got my hands on another Chilean band which Erik got me into (and had an interview with them) - Angulart.
Had a couple of listens and so far -

I am very glad with the good words about overlooked Chilean band Angulart because they have a very adventurous and compelling sound with inspired vocals and lots of great musical ideas I will contact their manager how about Angulart at this moment, I was told by him that their singer left last year.

I don't know that I'd say that the region is set to become the prog leader, but with the internet's wide distribution, it's given acts from that area a better opportunity for exposure. Especially in a scene like prog that tends to rely more on community for info & references, i.e. word of mouth.

Hi, i guess you have talked about some bands from Chile, anyway id like to recommend Akineton Retard and Evolucion, there are my favorite bands from there.

Samir, we have a foster child in Paraguay, his name is Elias, he is 15, he loves football, guitar and drawing, just like his foster parent in Holland
Evolucion is great but I don't know bands from Paraguay, I am sure fellow collaborator Cesar Inca Mendoza can help you

Did you listen Vesania from Brazil? I just listened last days and I really loved it!
I don't like metal, but this (symphonic) album with a touch of metal is really really good!!!
I will write a review for their unique album... coming soon...

You're all missing one heck of a band: FRAGIL, from Peru.
It's one of those pop prog bands, not saying it is worse or anything, it's excellent music, just don't expect any virtuosism, ultra fast and intricate solos or riffs, great epics, experiments or things like that, it's just always very enjoying. Check out Av. Larco (excellent album but poor sound production), Cuento Real (good songs, good production, good everything) and Sorpresa del Tiempo (a live album that includes almost all songs from Av. Larco, this time with a totally superior sound quality).

Talking about South American music, let me tell you taht today i had my first experience with Perpettum Karma, my first impression was good, but not as good as i thought, i found it boring in several moments, but full of great music in other, not a masterpiece definitely, but obviously i have to listen to it more times.

You are right El Bothy, shameless self thread promotion last night , I couldn't resist the temptation when I noticed how many threads I started in the past in the Prog Music Lounge I will not repeat it, it remains an one-shot joke!
About Perpetuum Karma by Nexus, Memowakeman, it will grow with every listening session. Nonetheless, I notice that the one symphomaniac is absolutely delighted about this album and the other proghead is a bit bored about it so it seems to evoke quite mixed feelings.

I count myself with the last ones, I really dont understand all the excitment for this album. I find every song too long for its own sake, except the last one. Personally I also find it a bit too derivated from ELP and others, and there seems to be a lack of originality. Its a 3 star album for me, as I think I put it quite clearly in my review (which you are all more than welcomed to check out).
ah, and erik... we have all done it

I remember your review very well El Bothy because I was astonished that an Argentine proghead was not really delighted about the new Nexus album I am still delighted about it, I love the tension between the mellow, bluesy atmospheres and dynamic ELP-like parts, if you let yourself carry away with the music, it's very compelling. I am glad we agree more about other Argentine progrock sensation William Gray, very overlooked on Prog Archives!

I really don't think so.
1.- Artists here are starving and buried under tons of crap from transnational music companys.
2.- If the artist doesn't die of a bad case of empty stomach and overall rejection, the police beats us all and our governments sell us to the USA for nothing in every possible way. I'm not kidding,
3.- If it is not the lack of proper feeding or the selling, the stupidity that has been promoted to death by once again our governments has brought to us reggaeton music, wich is another reason to make the subject of the thread an impossible .

I'm still perfectly fine with exploring South American prog from the 1970s. Mind-blowing stuff, I'd say. Crucis, La Maquina de Hacer Pajaros, Wara... great stuff.

About Angulart: I have lost contact with their friendly manager since a few months, they had rehearsed with a new singer, more I don't know ..
The current Latin-American progrock is great delivering excellent albums by William Gray and Nexus and exciting DVD's by Quaterna Requiem and especially Tarkus

Good to see so many people posting here... I agree with all the comments, excelent music all way around South America.
I will add few bands with recent works, among others not yet mentioned:
- Leusemia, from Peru. I received the excelent cd Hospicios as a gift from my good friend Cesar Inca in a visit to Lima and it really surprised me. Is a masterpiece.
- Tavo Castillo, excelent senior flautist, keyboardist and guitarist (formerly with peruvian band Frágil) released an interesting solo cd called Ensueños, good for relaxing mood times.
- Eclipse, Brazilian prog band that had the track "Give It Back" included in the Gentle Giant tribute album Giant Tracks. Their cd Jumping From Springboards was considered the best Brazilian prog cd in 2003 by local prog site "Rock Progressivo Brasil".
I also reinforce the impressions about Exsimio, from Chile, excelent band that I had the chance to see live in Brazil (2006) in a tour with the also good band Flor de Loto from Peru...
And for those who appreciate heavier sounds, the Heavy Metal scene is also very strong presently in South America, specially in Brazil and deserves a closer look...

I must agree that my neighbors are excellig at prog at the moment. But there is also a true tresure awayting in the discovery of the bands of the past.
I say this becuse inspite of the recent reawakening of prog in the region, the best still resides in the late 70-80s.
I have yet to see some great brazilian names such as Ronnie Von ackwnoleged.
In a better note, Os Mutantes, our greatest prog band have reunited and are plannig a new album, so more prog to come...
