The sound effects were used perfectly and the vocalist did an amazing classical solo (it was a slap guitar sort of technique... there's a name for it but I forget). Their music wasn't particularly great, but the musicianship was jaw-dropping. At least I hope that's the same band we're all talking about here and not 3. Odd how those two bands ended up in the same subgenre of prog (crossover). It makes things so confusing!

I saw these guys, (Three), open for Porcupine Tree last November. They did sound awesome on stage. However, we couldn't here the vocals, because we were right up against the stage.  Loved the slap playing method. I though that was pretty original and hadn't seen it before.
So after the show, my friend buys their latest CD. I was bummed, because I didn't bring enough money to buy a copy for myself, and he couldn't loan me any. We even shook hands with the band, and told them we enjoyed the show, and so on.
We threw the CD in the player on the way home, and couldn't believe our ears! The singer, which we couldn't hear in concert, sounded like one of those pseudo boy band singers. It was some kind of "girly" voice. It was awful! We got have way through the CD and we couldn't take it anymore.
You'd be surprised how far a CD will fly like a frisbee, when flung out of a car tooling down the freeway.  Wink

No, but saying all progressive rock has the same "point" is.

Untrue. While saying that prog has a point could sound as if he was generalizing, I personally think that getting together to flaunt your technical skill is about as un-prog as they come. Not because all prog has the same agenda, but more because, frankly, prog was never about "showing off", nomatter what sub-genre you belonged to-- that was metal's department, but I guess because the two are combined now, we have to put up with narcisistic show-offs like Portnoy from time to time, Cry

(Not that I dislike Dream Theater as a whole, I just don't think much of Portnoy's attitude at times)

3 don't really seem like a band that shows off all that much technical skill

I mean his flamenco is insane
but he doesn't actually "show off" per se

and Opeth never struck me as extremely technical although their acoustic passages can be near impossible at times

Okay, let me be more specific, here . . .

At the START, prog rock wasn't about showing off. Sure, there were technically proficient bands (Yes, King Crimson, etc.), but they didn't flaunt their playing ability as if that was what made them prog. What made them prog was the presentation of the stage show, the depth of the music, and really, the overall experience as a whole. However, for many years now prog has become a sport rather than an art, with countless bands copying Dream Theater and Rush with no original concepts of their own. Bands like this have, in my opinion, made prog a genre in which the only thing that matters is how many notes one can play in a second, rather than what it started out to be, which was a complete listening experience.

This is only my opinion of course, as I can't convince everyone to see it the same way I do, but yeah, I do feel like the more prudish of prog fans actually have no idea what prog really was in the beginning. They knock bands like Pink Floyd and Tool because they can't outplay Yes, but if they would really stop and listen from a listener's point of view, and not as a musician, maybe they could see what the fuss is all about. (Not calling you an elitist per se, I don't even know what bands you do and don't like, or for what reason, I'm just making a general statement, not trying to 'generalize', really.)

P.S. I'm sorry, but your statement about Opeth is the most contradictory thing I have read all week, thanks for the giggles. Tongue J/K, J/K.

You know actually after studying your signature, I have to say you are not an elitist at all; you seem to have a great variety of taste within the prog genre. That's great!

Why am I not suprised... LOL

that's a joke right?  Mike never seemed that conceded in the interviews I've seen.
