Experimental/Post rock Appreciation Threa

^^^^ I would say maybe somewhere in between spacekraut (Tangerine Dream/Dom (without the folk element)) and Joy Division (without the punk element). This is a classic of postrock imo, and more challenging than their later, more mellow albums, though I enjoy them a lot too. You should definitely give it a listen. Try for instance the songs "Accellerating on a smoother road", "Splash down", "Sliding glass" and "Everlast".
I also recommend the second album; "A stable reference".

Cool. I enjoyed their debut, but still haven't checked this one out. How does it compare to their other release?

How does it compare to their other release?   That's the thing, I don't know their other album. But this one is as ambient as it has a good sense of rock. It sounds pretty similar to the debut, from what I've read on that review. I'll need to listen to them more often. Maybe I'll pop it later this week.

Now it's my turn to show you one of my favourite post-rock bands. They're called Arrive Alive and it's a collaboration between two people who live in different continents and communicate through the internet and make music together this way. Their songs are all posted on their website and can be downloaded for free.

Positive changes and good vibrations are happening on a Russian underground scene, and one of the sources of them is this unconventional band. Rising from the ashes of DAIRY HIGH, indie/brit-pop band, SILENCE KIT recorded their self-titled debut in 2002 and released it at the end of the year. They were giving it for free on their concerts, and this definitely helped them to become even more popular in underground/indie community. "Pieonear", released in May 2004, had only three long tracks on it (in best GY!BE/EXPLOSIONS IN THE SKY/MOGWAI/MONO traditions) and quickly became even more popular than preceding record. Unfortunately, band's cello player Yaroslav Kovalev tragically died on September, 5, 2005, and for some time they've suspended their activity. But after some line-up changes they have returned with a brand new album (released September, 1, 2007), which has mounted them on Russian underground Everest. If Canada has GY!BE and Iceland has SIGUR ROS as Post-Rock symbols, look for SILENCE KIT in Russia. Extremely recommended!

Recommended for fans of:  The heavier Mogwai, Russian Circle, Mono and Post-Rock with very little minimalism, but more dimensional.

C'est Mortel is basically a side-project by Tom Naumann and Mason Brown from the Athens, Georgia, band, Jet by Day. The band was formed in 2000 and the idea behind this project was too play something different from what they were previously doing and that's exactly what they achieved with C'est Mortel. Naumann and Brown recruited several musicians from the Athens area like Devin Brown, Brett Griffin, and David Specht to play on this new side-project. The band's music is a combination of the heaviness from Progressive Metal, the delicateness of Post-Rock and the epics from Progressive Rock. C'est Mortel's songwriting is very similar to that of Progressive Rock artists, they mostly (if not only) write epics ranging over the 30-40 minute mark and feature a lot of changes in themes and dynamic...C'est Mortel is basically a side-project by Tom Naumann and Mason Brown from the Athens, Georgia, band, Jet by Day. C'est Mortel is a tough band to pin down. They mix effortlessly Prog Metal, Post-Rock and Prog Rock without sounding patchy. They're one of the few Post-Rock bands that have admittedly been influenced by Progressive Rock. Highly recommended for Prog Rock fans looking for something new while still staying true to their roots and for fans of Post-Rock looking for a bit more complexity in their music.


Recommended For Fans Of:  ... I can't find another band similar to them. Unique. A blend of  Space Rock, Prog Metal, Post-Rock and Prog.

I've been listening to some Post Rock recently, especially Godspeed, who I've enjoyed very much, and right now I'm listening to Yndi Halda for the first time, and I'm really liking them.  I'd like to look into this genre more, does anyone have any suggestions? 

(I'm mostly looking for instrumental bands, by the way.)
