While the two can be compared/ contrasted, one doesn't have to draw-out comparisons between the bands to choose which band one prefers. I quite like VDGG (love some of the band's stuff) and largely dislike Dream Theater from the rather limited material of DT's that I know. I'm not keen on DT style-metal. I'm not that into metal, but the metal influenced (metal fusion music) I do like tends to be listed here under Art Rock and Avant Prog. I'd take Estradasphere, for instance, any day over Dream Theater.

Did you know because of Dream Theater great sucess there are 1000 of fans discovering progressive rock for the first time so stop this kind of hatefull thread
.!!!! we shouldn't have this kind of discution here. there are prog bands i don't like much, but I don't make thread to compare them and try to creat riots.

Van Der Graff of course.
Dream Theater are excellent musicans, but I dont find their work original, soulful or remotely interesting. I'm delighted that a band can still be acclaimed for their ability as musicians in these crap times, but for me their songs just dont appeal. Sorry.

Hmmm... Dream Theater is one of my least favorite bands, while VdGG is one of my all-time most beloved bands.... I guess I got to go with Hammill and the crew here!

Ditto  It´s like comparing the movie 2001 : A Space Oddysee from Stanley Kubrick to a movie (any movie from Ed Wood like Glen or Glenda or Plan 9 From Outer Space) Van der Graaf Generator make a far more interesting work than DreamTheather (it realy is a bit strange comparing these two groups )maybe if you had tried to compare DT with TheMarsVolta it would be more challenging and even so my vote would ´ve gone to TMV.

My thoughts exactly as I read this poll. At least somebody has some sense here. Supposedly open-minded prog fans all saying things like stupidest poll ever, can't compare 'em, whining ad nauseam. No wonder prog gets a bad rap. Think of it this way guys: given a choice, in general who would you rather listen to, VDGG or Dream Theater? Is that a hard question? For me, I love both, and both types of music, but I have to go with DT as their music being more metal-oriented is more straight-forward, and also because they are still around and I've seen them in concert a couple times. Also looking forward to Systematic Chaos and the new tour, will be getting tickets for sure
