It's one of the best album from Eloy with Ocean and an excellent space rock record

Sure it has some echoes from Pink Floyd (notice the pun

), but they have their own touch, their own feel

Most ridiculous is Ritchie Blackmore with his endless Night's carols exersises.

As to more serious music - I find huge qtty of releases by Tangerine Dream, Rick Wakeman and John Zorn to be quite ridiculous - without knowing all of them it can be difficult to judge, but I doubt somehow that quality of these releases stands up to the quantity.

Rick Wakeman really fits the bill, although I'm not sure 'ridiculous' is the right word (although I see what you mean- certainly the 'on ice' stageshow was ridiculous!!)- maybe 'preposterous' or the dreaded 'pompous' suits better.

Try out his 'Journey To The Centre Of The Earth' or 'The Myths And Legends Of King Arthur', which I have a lot of time for despite their obvious grandeur. Also, Rick's more recent follow up to 'Journey...'- 'Return To The Centre Of The Earth'- should appeal, maybe even more so if you are weaned on Ayreon due to all the famous guest vocalists on 'Return'.

In the same vein, I feel 'War Of The Worlds' qualifies. And as much as I love them, I would definitely agree Uriah Heep's 'The Magician's Birthday' is the most preposterous track the band have recorded. It's never been a fave of mine because it's more 'excessive' than 'progressive'- check out the elongated guitar solo from Mick Box, pure Nigel Tufnel- 'my solos are my trademark'...'Pilgrim' from 'Sweet Freedom' almost teeters on the brink of it too, with its extremely epic chorus and heavy, bombastic climax.

I think the topic starter used the wrong word ... I think he meant "hilarious", which doesn't have the negative implications of the word "ridiculous".

While I like DT quite a bit, SFAM was a prime example of musicians taking themselves too seriously. I don't think DT has a goofy song, do they? Every Prog band owes it to themselves to be silly once in a while.

Borderline with prog, although more in the melodic power metal vein, Hugo Flores' 'Project creation' sounds a bit like Ayreon.

some Triumvirat is pretty ridiculous. They should have just been an instrumental band and did away with the corny ancient Rome themes.

Ayreon can be a little cheesy.. THE wasn't, it was excellent. But Into the Electric Castle has it's cheesy moments, like Across the Rainbow Bridge. Don't get me wrong, I think it's an excellent song. But I just can't help but laugh everytime I hear "ACROSS THE RAINBOW BRIDGE!"

Well people you think That THE and SFAM are ridiculous or cheesy concepts. But the way how a story is said sometimes can destroy it or make it special. IMHO the story of Snow (by Spock's Beard) is ridiculous but it is really well said. And the five or six or whatever parts of the Rhapsody/Turilli saga are really RIDICULOUS!!!!

Some of Jethro Tull and Frank Zappa and David Bowie's things have gone way way way over the bordrline of being stupid. Some borders on being crazy and weird and ugly and some being scary as well. Gary Numan And David Sylvain the same goes for them and finally last but by no means last Talking Heads as well.

Nektar's Remember the Future has the most cliche, lame, stereotypical prog-concept album story: A blind boy whose sight is magically restored by a mystical bird from outer space.

On musical ridiculousness, I often find myself laughing out loud at Etron Fou Leloublan's live album En Public.... The lineup is a trio of bass, sax, and drums, and they play this fast-paced music where the bassist plays power chords, the saxaphonist squeeks, and the drummer plays weird patterns that barely match up with the rest. Meanwhile, the bassist screams the lyrics in french, and they all stay perfectly serious. They're so serious that I find them absolutely hilarious.
