Hah, and your wrong on both counts, very wrong.
I voted for Yes, there nothing special to me.

As I've said, that's not what I think. That was my analysis of the poll results at the time.
Now, however, Genesis and Pink Floyd are the best prog bands ever.
Dream Theater, it seems, is still the most overrated...

They'll be slaughtered like squealing swine by all of us more "traditional-minded" prog fans!
Wheeeeee!
Seriously, this poll seems pretty pointless.
Sorry.

so what? this is a fact of life ...
apparently the topic starter took only those bands listed in the top 100 or whatever in progarchives... what can we do, when DT is the one and only prog metal band in this scope (which actually shows how much overrated it is!)
go, go, go, kill it, slaughter, rip off their heads
if DT wasn't on the list, I believe PF would have assumed its role, or Rush maybe... (don't be distracted by the ratings; ask DT bashers which one would they have prefered in place of it!) |
Heh, PF is in last place, which, like in golf, is a good thing.

My vote goes to Yes, great musicians but a terrible vocalist.
Sorry, but I can´t stand his voice.

I don't listen to prog metal so I can't judge Dream Theater and I haven't heard a substantial amount of Rush yet. With that in mind, from worst to greatest:
Van Der Graaf Generator (not horrible or anything, just boring sometimes) Jethro Tull Yes Gentle Giant King Crimson Genesis Pink Floyd Camel

Jethro Tull. This is one of few art rock bands, that mostly I can't enjoy. They bore me.

Is Dream Theater an elite prog band?
I voted for Jethro tull because I didn't think DT deserved to be on the poll. Jethro Tull is great, but they're still obnoxious.

I don't like this thread; I love all the bands!
(It's a good thread, I just don't want to choose)

I'm not keen on Dream Theater. It would be too strong to say I dont like them at all, there are selected` tracks, but overall they do little for me.

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

Out of all these bands, Dream Theater is the only one I don't have in my collection. I have heard them, and I have no desire to own any of the albums.
Of the ones I do have, Camel would probably be at the bottom.

IMHO neither Rush or Camel are among the elite of Prog Rock and much less Dream Theater, the big 6 were always Yes, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson, Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull.
Itaian bands as PFM, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso and Le Orme; Dutch as Focus, Sweden as Anglagard or Par Lindh, etc, deserve much more to be in a top list than Dream Theater.
If I had to vote among the real elite I would go with King Crimson, never really understood most of their albums.
But from this list, my obvious choice is Dream Theater.

The bands you have listed have not at all had the effect that Dream Theater has on the new progressive rock world. I support DT being on this list as they are at the top of the list of modern prog as many of the other bands listed are at the top of the classic prog list. I very much enjoy all of the bands on the list, but sadly I must vote for VDGG. I enjoy their music very very much but I feel dispite the fact that they have a fantastic fansatic lyric/ songwriting base, (basically all Peter Hammill) their instrumental base is a bit off in my opinion. Their lack of true professional guitar and bass players makes them appeal less to me. Also many of their songs are about half as complex as other classic prog bands. I feel that most of the time its only organ, drums, sax and vocals playing. Don't get me wrong, all of the songs that I have heard by them are fantastic, with many of their melodies being captivating. I like what I have heard from Peter Hamill's solo work a little bit more actually. This was a very tough desicion for me of couse.

I thought this was going to be an extremely hard poll. I felt sure ELP would be on here, and, they are, along with Dream Theater, my least favourite prog band. Now, to choose between those two would be extremely difficult indeed! I was sweating, I can tell you!
However, seeing as ELP are not on the list, the choice is made very easy - Dream Theater!!!

^Although very over-the-top at times, ELP comes nowhere near Dream
Theater in terms of sheer cheesiness, as far as I'm concerned. Perhaps
they should've chosen a singer with different surname...

I'm pretty outnumbered here, but I think DT is is the second best prog-metal group next to Fates Warning. Every member of the band is a virtuoso with the exception of James LaBrie, who most people despise. Jethro Tull are far more boring thatn DT, though every band on this poll is amazing.

That's the main problem of the band, they are a group of virtuoso players almost in a contest trying to prove who can do the most complex solos and the team work is left aside.
The worst thing is that the most talented of their members (John Myung) can barely be listened by human ears.

Dream theatre gets my vote ;). But King Crimson probably come second. They only have a dozen fairly cool songs from 1969-1974 then they broke up. Were fairly good in the 80s though.
