The 10 bands listed in the poll are considered to be among the elite of progressive rock.  They appear prominantly in the Prog Archives Top Music Albums listings.  However, I sometimes wonder how many others, like myself, do not particularly enjoy certain "all-time great" bands.  For example, I am still trying to like Genesis, Rush and Pink Floyd, but they just do not "turm me on" like Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Camel or Gentle Giant.  So I offer this poll, not to see the most popular band, but to see which of the great bands is least popular.  Give it a vote!

Camel, I don't think they were great, there are bands more successful and infinately more innovative than Camel. To me they sound too typical. Nice sounding though but certainly should not be anywhere near the top 100, I think they laked that  edge and innovation that garnered other prog bands the attention, I think they played it too safe. Pleasant enough but nothing impressive.

Dream theater is my favorite band so that rules them out.... of all the others, all of them of the "classic" era, Yes is my favorite (and the only in my top ten of all time).... Genesis, Floyd, Crimson, rush, Giant, all masters....so that leaves only Tull, VDGG and Camel.... Tull is very good, I haven't heard Camel, and VDGG is good but it didn't work 100% for me.... so in other words... I have no idea.... but let's be irrational and vote for the band I haven't bought a cd from, for tham shows I don't care much about knowing them... Camel.

Well of those listed, it's probably Dream Theater. The only album I think is all that great and consistent is 'Scenes From A Memory'. The songwriting obviously came first with that one- ironic that it should be a concept album, then. The others I have of theirs have too many long winded solos for my taste, and too many sub par AOR ballads ('Octavarium' stand up).

Dream Theater definitely. I listen to them occasionally (well, rarely really). Guess I'm still living in the 70's!

The way I came up with this top 10 list was totally objective, based on the Prog Archives Top Albums list.....I just took the first 10 bands that had at least 2 albums listed, starting with #1.  Anyway, my curiosity has been satisfied.  It looks like the majority of progheads (including me) do not favor prog metal music over the classic Symphonic/Art Rock/Folk/Psych-Space prog music.  A generalization, but a fair one I think.  Of the most popular bands listed in the prog archives, Dream Theater is least beloved and it sounds as if ELP would have captured some "tough love" too (I can't stand them either).  I can understand some people having a hard time with Rush and VDGG.  Actually, the poll went pretty much as I thought it would.  Thanks for participating and PROG ON!!!

IMHO neither Rush or Camel are among the elite of Prog Rock and much less Dream Theater, the big 6 were always Yes, Genesis, ELP, King Crimson, Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull.

Itaian bands as PFM, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso and Le Orme; Dutch as Focus, Sweden as Anglagard or Par Lindh, etc, deserve much more to be in a top list than Dream Theater.

If I had to vote among the real elite I would go with King Crimson, never really understood most of their albums.

But from this list, my obvious choice is Dream Theater.

The bands you have listed have not at all had the effect that Dream Theater has on the new progressive rock world. I support DT being on this list as they are at the top of the list of modern prog as many of the other bands listed are at the top of the classic prog list.

I very much enjoy all of the bands on the list, but sadly I must vote for VDGG. I enjoy their music very very much but I feel  dispite the fact that they have a fantastic fansatic lyric/ songwriting base, (basically all Peter Hammill) their instrumental base is a bit off in my opinion.

Their lack of true professional guitar and bass players makes them appeal less to me. Also many of their songs are about half as complex as other classic prog bands. I feel that most of the time its only organ, drums, sax and vocals playing. Don't get me wrong, all of the songs that I have heard by them are fantastic, with many of their melodies being captivating. I like what I have heard from Peter Hamill's solo work a little bit more actually. This was a very tough desicion for me of couse.

I thought this was going to be an extremely hard poll. I felt sure ELP would be on here, and, they are, along with Dream Theater, my least favourite prog band. Now, to choose between those two would be extremely difficult indeed! I was sweating, I can tell you!LOL

However, seeing as ELP are not on the list, the choice is made very easy - Dream Theater!!!Dead

^Although very over-the-top at times, ELP comes nowhere near Dream Theater in terms of sheer cheesiness, as far as I'm concerned. Perhaps they should've chosen a singer with different surname...

I'm pretty outnumbered here, but I think DT is is the second best prog-metal group next to Fates Warning. Every member of the band is a virtuoso with the exception of James LaBrie, who most people despise. Jethro Tull are far more boring thatn DT, though every band on this poll is amazing.

That's the main problem of the band, they are a group of virtuoso players almost in a contest trying to prove who can do the most complex solos and the team work is left aside.

The worst thing is that the most talented of their members (John Myung) can barely be listened by human ears.

Dream theatre gets my vote ;). But King Crimson probably come second. They only have a dozen fairly cool songs from 1969-1974 then they broke up. Were fairly good in the 80s though.

That's right, I always found Myung to be the most talented of the band... even if Petrucci is all right I prefer Al Di Meola... But with Myung it's a very even choice amidst other great bass players (even including jazz bassists)

I voted Dream Theater, but basically they are not fitting too well on this list, and in favour ELP should had been listed.

If ELP came in instead of Dream, I would had voted VDGG... they're not bad, but I can't stand Hamill's nihilist philosofizing nor his vocals, and I can't get myself into their music

For those of you who voted for Dream Theater, I pity you. Your heart is as cold as your mind is closed. Go ahead and keep your satisfaction of knowing that Dream theater is the most hated band in prog.

They are NOT, however, the most overrated band in prog. This poll is indicative of the fact that that moniker belongs to someone else. So don't call them that.

Go ahead and bash them all you want. They're not going to go away. Those of us who appreciate DT will not go away. We'll just keep on loving the same incredible music you will never be able to hope to appreciate. Again, I pity you.

And the more DT is hated here, the more cool us pro-DT progfans are. Down with the status quo!

I don't really understand all this "DT-hate". Why so ???  DT are very decent prog-metal band, full of virtouso musicians, participating in excellent side projects. DT are one of the icons of the sub-genre, doing their prog-metal job perfectly. There is whole lotta bunch of DT-clones, really despisable outfits, who rightfully deserve all thumbs down, but everyone seems to be obsessed with giving DT a kick. I am not a big fan of DT, nor of prog-metal in general, but I must admit they have their perfect moments. And my main point - for many people that I know DT served comfortable transitional bridge to finally escape realms of metal on their way to true Prog.

i also voted DT, but i can't see any hate in this. i think you DT fans are overreacting. if you accuse me of "hate" and you "pity" me, that's not good image for DT. you must understand that bands with "hardcore" fans have more chances to get a rejection response from neutral persons. it also fair for both sides to agree on the difficult context. DT fans must agree that many votes here go for DT not because of their musical achievemts, but because of the "DT phenomenon" which, as i said, irritates neutral persons. on the other side, it was not fair to put DT in this list because there's no comparison with the rest, which are all representative for the classic era. there is no common ground, despite the filiations; you can't compare father to son, uncle to nephew.

It's not hate, so don't get defensive... I myself feel appreciation for their individual talents.. I think "An Evening With John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess" is a superb live non-DT performance, and some Liquid Tension is passable at most. But, aside from some good arrangements, DT's music doesn't strike me as the "high quality" sound I thought they had when I was younger... I recently passed my teenages (I'm now 20), so don't think that all people who dislike in some way DT are close-minded old greasers who live in the past (no offense, good people Smile, by the way I think you know where that pun came from hahaha). I've heard almost all of their albums (my streak ended when I listened to TOT.. although I've heard some Octavarium) and after listening to many classic bands I look back to DT and don't find it interesting anymore. Their attitude is the first let-down... and there are just too much Iron Maiden and Metallica influences (later some nu-metal) that really spoil the songs, so as far as the music goes, it's a bit overrated, but still they have some decent ideas every now and then. I said in a post that Portnoy is overrated, but he's still very good, I just don't get the fuss about him being the best drummer. Rudess is very talented, and the most talented keyboard player DT's had. Petrucci is very professional (although a bit formulaic most of the time, but extremely accurate) and, well, Myung is the most underrated member in my opinion, I don't hear much praise about him as I do about Portnoy or Petrucci, perhaps because he's so darned drowned in the mix. Let's face facts: they are not one of the "greats" of progressive rock because they just make a collage of pre-established styles and soundscapes, and they incorporated cartoonish elements of NWBHM to sort of spoil the progressiveness. But most of us don't really hate them, just sort of dismiss them... I respect your taste, but as for me, they mightl never gain my attention again

As I went to bed last night, I wanted to clarify something from my last post. It hasn't bugged me when people simply voted for DT, but when they genuinely show perverse pleasure in noting that DT is getting "slaughtered" in this poll, it's just plain disheartening. I respect that anyone wouldn't like the band. But to mock them at the same time feels like your laughing at my personal taste in music. Peter, you're right: it's NOT politics, it's music.  And that's exactly why I don't understand why I see so many people have flaming, negative posts about them (and mostly I'm referring to others, not you). Personally, I voted for Pink Floyd. But saying something along the lines of "FINALLY PINK FLOYD REALLY DESERVES TO WIN THIS POLL, KILL THEM KILL KILL KILL" is hopefully something I wouldn't resort to.

Ahem...

I, too, agree that Dream Theater doesn't fit in here, and that ELP is the obvious band to go in its place.   A bit unfair.

I voted for Dream Theater even though I don't think they're appropriate for this list. I don't hate Dream Theater, but they do leave my heart cold and don't engage my mind (intellect) in a personally satisfying way.  It's a matter of taste, experience and association.  I just don't connect with the music strongly.  I've never been into metal. However, I can enjoy "metal" elements very much when utilised sparingly in songs -- primarily for contrast --  by Prog artists not labelled "Prog Metal".  I quite like DT's stuff (what I know of it) because it's not hardcore metal, but there is other music that conforms to my disposition that pleases me more -- that includes all of the other bands listed in this poll. I had to choose something, and DT is the band I like least (though I don't really dislike DT).

Really, why pity us?  There are plenty of great Prog bands for every Prog taste.  There are hundreds of Prog bands whose music I really like, and hundreds more to discover.  Why push a band that doesn't appeal to one when there are so many bands that do and will readily appeal?  I find great new Prog on a daily basis (shame I can't afford to buy all of the CDs, but there is a plethora of legal mp3s to enjoy at this site, myspace, and at the band's official sites).

So I take it you consider Genesis to be the most "overrated" (your choice of word) bands since they have the fewest votes in this particular poll?  Is that the band you voted for then?  Which band did you choose, and why?  Or did you not bother to vote, preferring instead merely to criticise those who do have a clear dis-favourite which is DT?  I would have voted for most any Prog Metal band that I knew reasonably well if it were on the list... Unless a Neo-Prog band also had made the list (though there a few I like, but not the really popular ones).

I wouldn't dream of calling DT "overrated" (an overused and overly theatrical term in my opinion) even if others have.  Well, maybe I would, but I do have some pretty bizarre dreams.  The so-called great classic bands are dwelled upon a little too much for my liking, but it's because they are so well-known that people consistently refer to them.  I'd rather did deeper to bring the more obscure into the popular light -- but then as those less-known bands become mainstream amongst Progheads here, the cycle repeats.... So much great Prog and yet relatively few Prog bands are commonly focused on.

And feel free to bash DT bashers too -- they're not going to go away either. For some bashing is it's own reward, and entertaining to boot.  Fun, fun, fun, especially when it provokes a reaction. Those who appreciate the not so fine art of dumping on DT (and taking-the-piss with DT 'fan-boys' - a pejorative term) will not go away.  Take it with a pinch of salt.  It really doesn't matter what I think of the music you like and what you think of the music I like.  It's enough that music is liked by ourselves.  Indeed, DT has become too popular a target -- the more some express theyir approval the more others will jump on the band-wagon to be part of the Dream-bashing team.

Originally posted by xtopher xtopher wrote:

Liking something that many people hate doesn't make you cool -- just different.  I'm cool with differing tastes despite others' tastes leaving me cold.  Cool is not caring what other's think of your tastes, and nothing wrong with being quietly confident that what you like is special but others just don't "get it."  Cool is not worrying about what others think when it's a matter of taste -- accepting that we have different tastes.  Pitying others who don't like the same things you like is not cool (I noticed you italicised 'cool' so not sure quite how you're using the term).  If you like them -- good for you, I'm cool with that.  Just as there are many vocal detractors, there are many who love them.  It is because of the number of DT lovers that there are so many DT detractors, of course.  Nothing cool about hating, obviously, but some prefer to express disapproval in strong terms simply because they enjoy doing so (and because it can provoke humorous over-the-top reactions).

I must admit, however, that knowing and appreciating some of the more obscure Prog bands out there does make me feel a little special.  Not very special here, mind you, since there are plenty who know those and far more.  Still, sure, down with the status quo -- the status quo is unprogressive by nature.  I'm all for change (well, positive, as I see it, change -- i.e. change that benefits me).  I'm all for challenging our conceptions and broadening our tastes.

I feel that if more people were familiar with the more obscure Prog artists, the so called greats would not be held in quite the same adulatory esteem.  The so called greats are populist Prog (well known amongst Progheads).  That doesn't mean that they're not excellent, but there's a lot of music out there that I consider to be at least equally good that is hardly spoken of, simply because it's not so well-known.  One might say that these bands rose to prominence because they were so excellent, or because they were originators, but that's not the whole story.

Being a DT fan doesn't make you part of an elite clique anymore than being a DT hater makes you an elite member of the Prog cognoscenti (those purveyors of purportedly good taste).

In my local music store I find DT albums, but I can't find many Prog albums I'm interested in since I'm looking for more obscure artists.  My favourite of these poll choices is Gentle Giant.  Now they are a big Prog name but little known outside of Prog circles -- the store has none of their albums.  And good luck finding albums by recent bands I like in the local music store such as Kotebel, Taal, or Nil let alone classic bands such as Carpe Diem, Crucis, or, a big name here, Magma.

I don't pity those that don't enjoy the bands I like, but I do wish they were popular with the general public since I'd like to see more music being made of that ilk.  I wish more people would buy their CDs.  it's a sahe that so many talented composer/musicians can't afford to quit their day-jobs to pursue music as a real career.

And of course it is nice to sahre one's enthusiasm with like-minded people.  Some here don't like Gentle Giant -- I will take the opportunity to express with others who don't care for it why I do like it, but I don't expect others to conform to my musical tastes.  If they come around, well, sure that makes me happy since I do prefer music as a shared experience and wish i had more friends into the same types of music I really like.  I particuloarly wish I could bring my wife over to the Prog-side.
