Strange, from what I have heard so far the big 5 doesn't include King
Crimson. The reason is pretty simple: many people who doesn't even know
what is prog rock knows some songs of Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, ELP and
Jethro Tull. King Crimson nobody knows, classic rock stations don't
play them. They are restricted to the prog audience.
Usually people discover them when they search something else than Yes,
Genesis, ELP, Rush, Marillion, Tull, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd,
Supertramp, Renaissance.

Moody Blues has to be in the list, of course. All the people I know
that like classic rock and lived in 60's and 70's consider them
progressive rock. They are better known than King Crimson, even as a
prog rock band and all the people I know who likes prog, are prog
addicts, etc, don't consider King Crimson the first, because The Nice,
Procol Harum, The Moody Blues, Deep Purple were doing progressive rock
before King Crimson even existed.

This is another of those topics that will never have a definitive answer. Everyone, quite rightly, has their own opinions.
Generally, like a lot here, I agree that the 'big three', and indeed my personal faves from the early days, were, or are Genesis, Yes, and Pink Floyd. Most of my friends at the time also listened to those three the most.
After them we had King Crimson, ELP and Jethro Tull. Then came a third tier, including VDGG, Camel and Gentle Giant. Rush appeared just after that.
So, the big 6, as I would put it, would be, (in no particular order):
Genesis
Yes
Pink Floyd
King Crimson
ELP
Jethro Tull
If you had to drop one, it would probably be Tull.
It would be interesting to do a big 5 of more modern bands. If you took the starting point from the rise of Marillion, then a big 5 could look like this:
Marillion
Flower Kings
Dream Theater
Porcupine Tree
Spock's Beard
All of which I like, apart from Dream Theater!
Just my opinion, of course.

Actually, most of the people who aren't prog fans but still are casual listeners tend to think of King Crimson very often while none have ever heard of VdGG.

1. Genesis - God
2. Yes - God's Deputy
3. Jethro Tull - Probably the best "human" band there ever was, all around... (Genesis and Yes being inhuman - Godly)
4. Gentle Giant - No one can even come close to the sheer complexity and musical genius this band has created... Even the gods didn't create music just as intellegent as these guys...
5. Dream Theater - You can talk all you want about KC and ELP, but its a matter of taste. I prefer Dream Theater. I think they are much more innovative, plus they are technically, emotionaly, and in every way basically, better musicians than anyone else...
Some more noticable giants:
~King Crimson, I guess for.. "Inventing" progressive rock, and released a couple of other great albums
~Camel, they have came up with some kind of magic formula blending simple, easy to remember melodies with outstanding complexity and depth. I adore them for this... Easy to listen, but without losing any of the complexity...
~ELP, I guess they must be good because other people like them alot... I don't... Tarkus has it's moments, besides that... I don't like em... 
~Pink Floyd, same deal... I dont like them at all... Every time I hear them I feel like killing myself, but they are so boring that I just fall asleep before I get a chance to actually kill myself... But they are so popular, I guess they must be good to some extent...

There is no big five.
Progressive music is to broad to be summarised to five bands.
but my 2 cents:
1: Yes, the ultimate progressive band, managed to reach the non-prog music listeners also.
2: Pink Floyd, don't like them very much myself, but they reached the masses and opened the road for many bands that where more daring.
3. Magma: from the french isle of rock music, they've gone where no band has gone before, creating a complete new subdivision of space rock and jazz rock and mingle it with classical music.
4. Genesis: brilliant music, with occasional nice singing (improved after Gabriel left)
5. Dream Theater: I don't like their music, but they did what an entire generation of prog lovers hoped for, they brought prog back into the equation.

The big 4 are Yes, Genesis, King Crimson and Pink Floyd. The fifth is a tie between ELP and Tull. This is just based on supergroup status. My Top five favorites out of the supergroups are Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Camel and Gentle Giant (even though the last two unfourtunately never got the respect they deserved

A supergroup status you would have to take into account public awareness, concert and album sales ect. It is nothing to do with personal taste. Therefore the top five is
- PINK FLOYD
- ELP
- YES
- SUPERTRAMP
- JETHRO TULL
Genesis wouldn't make the list in the truest proggiest sense. They only sold out tours and had megastardom as a pop band, not as a prog band so they can't be included!
