 Topic: Who are the Big 5 supergroups?

inspired by rush topic...thought this was curious, i consider alot of prog bands to be super prog, whether i like em or not.
YES
ELP
Genesis
Moody Blues
Tull
Rush
probly forgot a few...but who exactly are the big 5?

I'm actually fairly certain that the above list is nigh undipsutable
(although GG and Tull could easily be on there as well.) As for MY top
5 supergroups:
Dream Theater
Camel
Rush
ELP
Transatlantic
But I don't really know what qualifies as a "supergroup". I also
need to mention that I love Yes, KC and PF, but I like DT, Camel, Rush,
ELP and Transatlantic just a smidge better. I also love Caravan, Return
To Forever and Spock's Beard, but I don't think that they're
necessarily supergroups (they're close, however.)

I don't know if their is a logical reason to ask for the big as against big 4 or big but here are my observations.
Yes Genesis and Pink Floyd are the big 3 that seem to vie for best prog band ever.
The argument for Yes is that at their best there is noone better and the individual talents of it's members.
The argument for Floyd is their popularity fame and records sold.
The argument for Genesis is that they have sold almost as well as Floyd, they have spawned popular solo acts and have the best discography
Yapping at the heels of the big 3 are King Crimson that really got the genre started, ELP ( unfortunately their dreadful decline post works vol 1has given amnesia to how huge they were in their heyday ),the Moody Blues, Dream Theatre and Jethro Tull.
Others may put up their personal favorites but generally these are the big acts.

The considered Big 5 are Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull and ELP.
But there is no use in talking of a "Big 5" when we have at least 20
major prog acts.

My top five so far are: King Crimson, Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Pink Floyd, and Dream Theater. But I'm still looking

i feel like this should be easy
i think it may have more to do with popularity and impact on prog rock
so...
Yes
Genesis
Pink Floyd
Jethro Tull
King Crimson
i think ELP is out because that band is completely forgotten among most people
Yes and Genesis for obvious reasons, Pink Floyd just because they are huge... and pretty good, Jethro Tull is quite diverse and has opened the doors for many people into stranger music, King Crimson is one of those bands where, when you find them, they are never forgotten, huge music,

I don't know how you could put Moody Blues into the mix. They're proto-prog and never made the leap into full blown prog. Let alone enough to consider them one of the big five. Also, Dream Theater started in the mid 80's far removed from the begining of the prog-movement.

Difficult, but none of the usual suspects for me. Perhaps Gong,
Hawkwind, Van der Graaf Generator, Magma and Amon Düül 2. But Embryo,
Can, Guru Guru, King Crimson or the Residents are close contenders and
might be named by me on another day. Or some other artist I just don't
think of at the moment. In any way, definitely not the usual suspects,
with the exception of King Crimson.

I've got to go with Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, and ELP. You could mix it up alittle. Maybe put Rush in there, but I don't know who I would take out. These have to be the five most important groups in prog. Just my opinion of course, but I bet there could be a strong argument made for these five.

KING CRIMSON marked the birth of a mature and extremely aggressive ''progressive'' sound (psychedelic with symphonic, electronic, experimental jazz, and even metal and folk).
Pink Floyd (psychedelic & space rock)
Jethro Tull (folk prog)
Rush (progenitors of progressive metal)

Without Genesis neither Marillion nor Rush would have existed (though Rush has a lot of Led Zeppelin influence too). I find it surprising that you did not include Genesis, that's all :-) don't like them? Ave Proglucky, great site. Mogens
