I don't know if any of you have heard of this band, but Crack The Sky was very progressive in their early years. I'd say pretty much anything off their first 3 albums(and live album) is progressive, to some degree.

Now after that, that's a different story! Still good music, though.

Danbo, so predictable....

Someone mentioned 'Bohemian Rhapsody' earlier in the thread; I think 'The Prophet Song' from the same album is far more progressive (and tragically, far less heard)

This is very true, and it should be mentioned that the transition from "the Prophet Song" to the next track, "Love of my Life" is so expertly done as to be seamless. Very impressive composition skills. As I've said before, Queen deserve an "honorary" place in progdom, if not a full blown club membership, which they may be too "style flexible" to hold in the eyes of some.

Perception is truth, ergo opinion is fact.

I agree- I think of "Queen 2" as a classic hard prog album

Even though I can't stand to listen to the band anymore, I agree...but I think "And Justice for All" is even more progressive, with increased song length and compositional development, tight meter changes and melodic soloing, neo-classical arrangements and narrative lyrics. It might even be called a concept album.

The Decline also has numerous different sections and rapid changes in time signature and melody.  Granted, it doesn't have terribly complex instrumentation, but there are without question very noticeable elements of prog.

Metallica's new stuff is horrible, but around the Master of Puppets era they were unquestionably flirting with prog.  I've long considered ...And Justice For All a prog metal album, and Master of Puppets has some prog elements as well, especially on the instrumental "Orion".

That song is Radiohead's Ultimate Prog moment, and the video made the song more memorable. They Earned the "Art Rock" Category with this one. In the Other hand "Kid A" (the song) sounds kinda progish too.

And Voivod released their most straightforward cd since 'the old days'.

At the time of 'Justice' , 'tallica was much inspired by WatchTower, inspiring them to compose longer, more complex songs.

I don't consider this 'prog', it was nothing new, nothing really jawdropping, just a Metalband trying to break away from formal metal structures with only some slight succes. If Metallica is 'prog' then so are Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost, Iron Maiden and so on.

Voivod, however, is/was PROGRESSIVE. They looked beyond the borders of that what's called metal and used these outsider elements to create new sounds.

I have never heard Voivod, but Mercyful Fate (for me) is one of those bands, that's on the edge of prog. Great metal!

Definitely check out "Nothingface" or "Angel Rat"...the same kind of chilly post-apocalyptic metal sound as "And Justice for All" but with more progressive tendencies. They do interesting covers of Pink Floyd's "Astronomy Domine" and "The Nile Song" too.
