It was a tragedy for Syd - but would the band have produced such masterpieces as "Meddle", "DSOTM" or "WYWH" if Syd had remained in the bad, addled or not?

...

RIP Freddie

Oh yes, I fully agree with you here, don't get me wrong. It was more of a personal tragedy for poor Psychic!Syd than for the band. But a tragedy it remains...

And poor Freddie, indeed. Queen without Freddie = No Queen.

You're probably right! Though in this poll I voted for Waters leaving Floyd, since then their few albums have been rather hit n miss. At least Genesis carried on for a while - well, at least until Steve Hackett left!

Back in the early 90`s Kansas released a CD called "Live at the whiskey" it was a live CD and musically it was great. The problem that it revealed however was permanent Steve Walsh`s voice was shot ! Since that release Steve Walsh`s vocals have never been the same , he never regained that golden voice he once had (due to a ?  life style and constant usage of his voice) .Being a huge Kansas fan that was very disappointing ... definatly a sad situation. Cry

These bands all turned out fine after these members leaving. Even though I tend to prefer the pre-leaving albums in all cases (except I'm not all that familiar with any Spock's Beard). I chose Roger Waters though.

Yes Steve's case was very sad indeed, the abuse of alcohol damaged his vocal chords (Something he has accepted) but also the fact that after he left booze and dope he had surgery and was adviced to leave singing for some time, but he was too eager to get on the road again and didn't took the rest rquired.

Now, that Live at Whiskey shows us a different approach by Kansas, even when they returned to their original music, Steve was passing a poser era and he looked like a caricature of David Lee Roth jumping and making Karate kicks all around the stage, plus the fact that they hired their actual violin player (David Ragsdale) who had a better technique than Robby, but a more Classical/Hard Rock approach leaving behind their country music influences.

Steve should accept his vocalist days are over, he's a great keyboard player and should stick to that, maybe sing one or two tunes (The band could play in a very low tone to help him) and hire a good singer, specially without Robby who was a great support in the vocals..
