When Gabriel left Genesis there was a tragedy but when Steve Hackett left that was a catastrophe...

Well, this is a real funny poll, because:
1) The solo work of Fish is very poor, but MARILLION is now better than never!!!
2) Roger didn't leave PINK FLOYD. The band was over, and then Gilmour decided to resuscitate it!
3) SPOCK'S BEARD was being repetitive with only Neal composing the songs. Now the band is showing a new refreshing sound, and it's good!
4) Peter Gabriel was having great ideas, but he couldn't develop this with GENESIS. I think he choosed the best: let the band follow your way, while he gone with his own steps. And the 4 piece band made 3 excellent albuns, before goes into pop... then, Gabriel exit wasn't a disaster!
Then, for me, not one of these happenings wasn't disasters, but natural choices that gave us opportunities to discover new sounds from these incredible artists...  |

As I'm more of a Floyd fan than a Genesis one, I'd settle for Waters leaving PF - or whatever really happened. The albums PF made without Waters are pleasant enough to listen to, but they are also rather soulless.
Another, though lesser known, tragedy (according to my personal taste) was Richard Sinclair leaving Caravan. It is no coincidence that the band's best album, "In the Land of Grey and Pink", was the one to which Richard contributed the most - both as a composer and as a vocalist.

Not real tragedies, because the loss of great musicians as Gary Thain, David Byron, Helmut Kollen, Rick Van der Linden, Jeff Porcaro, Keith Moon or John Entwistle among others are real tragedies, so a bit in a less serious mood:
- Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett leaving Genesis
- Phil Collins leaving his drums kit and taking a mic
- Steve Hacklett and Steve Howe joining GTR
- Love Beach
- John Elefante replacing Steve Walsh in Kansas
- Fish leaving Marillion
- In the Hot Seat
- Rick Wakeman starts to play New Age
- Brain Salad Perjury (Re-Works)...This should be number one, but ELP was not so important by that moment.

Yes, the above mentioded losses are the real tragedies.
About the poll I think the departure of Steve Hackett caused more damage than the departure of Gabriel.
The 4-piece Genesis was still very good.

How about Steve Hackett & Steve Howe deciding that instead of writing the greatest prog-rock guitar album ever, they'd get a squeaky voiced singer & release 'GTR' as a horrible AOR album...
Now that was a tragedy!

It was a tragedy for Syd - but would the band have produced such masterpieces as "Meddle", "DSOTM" or "WYWH" if Syd had remained in the bad, addled or not?
Harsh, I know.
Likewise, Fish had to leave Marillion - although I wish he'd go back. "Clutching At Straws" really sums up his emotional state at the time, and is noticeably weaker than the predecessors. There's still time for Mr Dick to go back and resurrect Marillion properly - Marbles has shown that they still have the potential.
I agree on Genesis being a team effort - the trio clearly wanted to make a few bucks and they did. Maybe they like what they did after "Duke", but I don't. My loss, I suppose.
The biggest tragedy for me was the loss of Freddie Mercury - a fabulous and irreplaceable singer with a brilliant musical imagination.
True, it took his knowledge of his own impending doom for him to stop mucking about with the pop rubbish and lead the band to come up with "Innuendo", but he was such a great showman - the world will wait a long time before we see his like again.

Hackett leaving Genesis, IMO.
I did like ATTWT and Duke; I think they are both excellent albums, but it was clear that the glory days were over. What happened to their music after Duke was the biggest tragedy in rock music history. Period.
Also with regard to 80's Genesis, and how they feel about it now. I've heard Banks say that Invisible Touch is the album he is least proud of. He claimed different at the time of it's release, of course and Chester Thompson also said that it got to a point with Genesis where they were so huge, in the mid 80's that 'something was lost' Playing with them seemed to not be the special thing it had been in the 70's. They had become a product.
