My theory is that the majority of progressive fans are -- in fact -- middle-aged, since they actually were around when most of the classic prog bands were making their music. However, I would hazzard to guess that many are (perhaps consequently) internet illiterate, and do not, then, frequent the archives.

Loving whatever music isn't that age-related, it's more a media-thing with the kids, the sooner they emancipate themselves from formatted radio and charts-stuff the sooner they can get in touch with other kinds of music.
I have learned that young people are starving for good music and thankful if you introduce them to stuff they don't know...
apart from that: EVERY generation have their IGNORANTS !

I'm 20 (21 soon) man. I've started to listen prog some 2 years ago. Before I liked '70 hard rock (Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Nazarteh, Judas Priest...and Deep Purple which introduced me to progressive rock when I listened their early four albums).

Wow, this poll is a pleasant surprise. I'm 16 and thought I was possibly the only ELP fan still in high school. I'm going to see Keith Emerson in New York City this June and I'm really looking forward to it.

21 been lisening to prog for like 5 years it started with Pink Floyd, so im preety new but still i think i have heard preety much of the "Big" prog bands, time to start dig in the prog mud, for more treasures. Big smile

I don't think this poll really shows the truth, I think the Younger fans are more active online, and more active fans as well, I think most proggers are in their fourties...

I've noticed a lot of prog fans my age have been introduced to prog by their parents, though it's not at all so with me. My dad introduced me to The Beatles when I was 7, which started me out on the right track, but I've made all the musical choices up until now. I started getting realy into Yes when I was about 14, and havent looked back, getting into stuff like Genesis, King Crimson, ELP...you guys know how it is. I'm 16 now, by the way.

Thankfully we have the internet. I fear that without the internet, progressive rock would have died years ago. Even the heavy weights such as YES had to straddle the pop fence to reel a few more fans in. All we can hope is that those fans went back in time with their curiosities and discovered the music of the 70's. We need more young people not only listening to progressive rock, but the classics and jazz as well. It's so important for a healthy society to celebrate it's artists and allow free reign so as to have the most creative and thoughtful music at all times.
