Pink Floyd for me. I have nothing against genesis or anything, but im just not into that symphonic stuff at all. Im not really in to any of the classic prog acts that are listed as "symphonic", that may surprice some people and maybe some people think that i dont really like prog at all because its those bands that sort of "created" the genre prog. And what do I know, maybe their right.

But im just more into psychedelic, avant-garde and jazzy stuff. I never get symphonic stuff, its to dull for me, it doesn't speak to me really. Im sure alot of the syphonic bands were more skillfull musicians then floyd and anything, but I cant help it, im just more intriged by "psychedelic" sounds.

Floyd by far. I'm getting more into Genesis, but what I've heard can't compare with Animals or WYWH at all. For one thing, WYWH is eargasmic; the experience of the third and fourth time I listened to the high guitar solo on SOYCD pt. 2 has never been duplicated by any other music I've ever heard.

Not all of Floyd's lyrics are depressing; on DSOTM the only song that is really depressing is Time. I think Waters' lyrics are better; he writes lyrics which are powerful and sound great without having insane allusions and puns like Gabriel seems to enjoy so much. Waters is serious most of the time, but not always depressing. I don't like his post-Animals work all that much anyway; it's too whiny.

Floyd are great, but not quite as great

Not much of a contest.  I love PF but their stuff is pretty straightforward, and let's face it, I could play the drums in that band.  Not that DSotM, WYWH and Animals aren't top-notch records that people will be listening to in a thousand years (and enjoyng the mind-altering substances of the future to as well).  Without a doubt they are one of the greatest rock bands that have ever been and will ever be, for that matter.

But the G (up through Wind and Wuthering, anyway) have such stylistic diversity, amazing multipartite songwriting, such dazzling musicianship and craft behind them.  Gabe's theatrical touches (up to '75), so legendary that cover bands who put on verbatim presentations of their early tours sell out 5,000 seat venues... cover bands!  All in all the G are just more unique and take more risks than PF.  That's why I picked them.

Hey nobody, ever contemplated founding a new faith based not on merit
or karmic debt or penance or salvation, but instead on passion itself? Why
one believes takes a backseat to how purely they beleive it. In this sense,
we might make strapping priests of this high passion latterday
syncretism.
Walk a tight rope, Floydy....I love you, but are you acrobatic, are you
bending your mind into the reverse and future directions of time? Floyd
have such an endearing, relaxing, purely powerful sound. Yet their quality
is ultimately so constrained to the 70s. They were (even more then
Zeppelin to me) THE 70s band. Not to say it doesnt come off timeless or
wont be enjoyed for time immemorial (until the Apes rise up and outlaw
the labor-distracting folly of melodies.) They may be infinite, but
infinitely harken to a certain cultural atmosphere.
Genesis, IMO of course, sound like they belong just as
much to the future: 'It', 'Silent Sorrow', 'Waiting Room', (not 'avante garde'
or 'outside' enough for you 'BitchBrew???) as they do to the middle ages
and rennaisance. Floyd are so wonderful, but always come off as a 'rock
band.' But in my heart and in my soul, Genesis are a myth, a symbol, an
adventure. When watching the Musical Box re-enact the Lamb at
Toronto's Massey Hall, I thought to myself, with all the visual madness
interspersed with such clarity and focus with sound yet so mad and
seemingly chaotic, this isnt JUST music. This is a story that tells itself and
comes from nothing and stems into my being.
Genesis Genesis Genesis. Again, I listen to Floyd constantly ('Burning
Bridges' anyone?). Guess I'm just confused as to why the 'classic rock'
contingent is coming out stronger then the 'syphonic progressive'
contingent on this one. But then again, Floyd gets destructive amounts of
Radio Play. Gabey Genesis does not. We just don't have as much of an
audience Then again, Thin Lizzy gets more love then Univers Zero.
It's like comparing a market square to a hall of mirrors.

Floyd better than Genesis? Gimme a break!!! The only guy in Floyd with any talent is David Gilmour, and while Waters sometimes wrote a good lyric, he can't play bass at all! So how can anyone believe he also wrote the guitar-solos. Also, remember those out-of-tune vocals during Live 8.

Genesis, on the other hand, was a band where all members had talent. Say what you want about Phil Collins' pop songs, but you cannot deny the fact that he is one of the best drummers of all time. Also, Tony Banks' keyboard parts are way interesting than Rick Wright's.

Don't get me wrong, I love Floyd (especially "Wish you were here"), but they're absolutely not such talented musicians as Genesis

No one would join my cult, dojo, because I'm not good looking enough and you know cult leaders always have to sleep with their disciples, whether they're the Maharishi Mahesh "Sexy Sadie" Yogi or Jim "White Nights" Jones.

Okay, I very rarely post here because sometimes it seems I ramble and get myself in trouble.  I just had to get in on this one however...and yes I voted for genesis, who IMHO eclipsed anything Floyd recorded...and they did it in 1971 with the release of "Nursery Cryme."  There is nothing boring about Genesis and to say that Gabriel's lyrics were never thought provoking, or at least interesting, is insanity, especially when comparing him to such a mediocre songwriter as Waters.  The unfortunate thing about Waters' material is the constant need to be depressing and dark...and not really in a good way, but more in a draggy, put me to sleep way!!!

I love Floyd...don't get me wrong, Animals, Meddle, Wish You Were Here...all classics.  The Wall and Dark Side put me to sleep in minutes simply because of how overplayed they are.  Since Genesis has much more complicated and involved music, it keeps my interest.  While Floyd went terribly downhill after Final Cut, Genesis, although mainstreaming a bit, still maintained a quality that was missing from latter day Floyd.  Phil Collins may have been a pop icon in his own world, but for Genesis he STILL wrote some thought-provoking music well into the final Genesis disc!!!  This is of course all in my opinion...all music is to be loved by someone...no one is right and no one is wrong!!!!!!!

Well, comparing these two great bands is like comparing pineapples and truffles. Pink Floyd has always been one of my favorite bands, but Genesis gets the number one spot for me.

I didn't like Dark Side Of The Moon when it first came out. I thought it was too blusey in comparison to the band's more psychedelic spatial realms of previous albums. Of course in time my opinions and feelings about the album changed in favor of it. Sonically it's a great album, one of the best.

I think my life changed the very first time I heard Watcher Of The Skies.  The haunting theatrical piano intro to The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway are prog milestones. I always felt Tony Banks had always been shoved behind Keith Emerson and Rick Wakeman. He's up there with them.

Then again, what other band produced a Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Steve Hackett?

In the beginning there was Genesis...

The Floyd have a more monochromatic sound, thick; not a whole lot going on musically. But what they do they do very well, and it hardly ever becomes tiring to me. I think Genesis are (Were? I'm thinking in present tense here...) able to suggest a whole lot more, in terms of musicianship. And Genesis have some great moments recorded. I just feel that Genesis are/were (the days of Floyd and Genesis are long past I suppose) kind of inconsistant. I literally stopped listening to 80's Genesis once I turned ten.

In any case. My vote goes towards Pink Floyd.

First post by the way.
